Advice by Lama Zopa Rinpoche For the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Kopan Monastery, Kathmandu, Nepal March 2020 Transcribed from the video recording by Ven. Joan Nicell, Kopan Monastery, March 2020. © FPMT Inc., 2020 Lama Zopa Rinpoche's Advice for the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) Introduction My most dear, most precious, most kind, wish-fulfilling ones, my fathers and mothers, brothers and sisters, students and friends, everybody, At this time there is a big change. It’s a time, a very important time, of discovery, a discovery of the truth of suffering. I heard that during the First World War that there happened a kind of influenza, a disease, epidemic disease. So many millions, five million? Fifty millions people died, minimum. Fifty millions people minimum, died. That happened, but we can’t say before, a long time ago, [what happened]. Then there happened different ones at different times. Some number of years ago, SARS happened, but I think it didn’t spread much. Our Dharma center, ABC in Singapore, invited the monks who do the Most Secret Hayagriva puja in Sera Jey, our college. They invited those monks who are specialized in doing the puja, and then also Lower Tantra College [monks]. They did, I think, Tsog Kong, Most Secret Hayagriva Tsog Offering, the eXtensive one. Then they did, I think, a wrathful fire puja and then I don’t know what else, but many others. Right after that the SARS stopped. The puja was done to stop the SARS. It was sponsored by our center, FPMT center, ABC. So that happened.

VOICES FROM TIBET: SELECTED ESSAYS AND REPORTAGE By TSERING WOESER AND WANG LIXIONG EDITED AND TRANSLATED BY VIOLET S. LAW A COMPILATION OF A SERIES OF ‘EXPERT ON TIBET PROGRAMS For RADIO FREE ASIA By WARREN SMITH 1 VOICES FROM TIBET Voices from Tibet is a recently published collection of articles about Tibet by Tsering Woeser and her husband Wang Lixiong. The articles were translated into English and published by a Chinese-American woman named Violet Law. Woeser is well-known to many Tibetans as a commentator on the political situation in Tibet. Wang Lixiong is a Chinese democracy activist and supporter of Tibetan human rights. They are based in Beijing. This is the first of a series of programs on their collected articles. The first article, “Freedom for Chinese, Autonomy for Tibetans,” was written by Woeser. Woeser writes about her excitement in October 2010 upon hearing that the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the Chinese democracy activist Liu Xiaobo. Lui was the first Chinese to win the Nobel Peace Prize, assuming, of course, that one does not consider the Dalai Lama, who won the Peace Prize in 1989, to be Chinese. Liu had been the organizer, in 2008, of Charter 08, which Woeser had signed, which called for human rights, democracy and the rule of law in China. It was modeled after Charter 77, which had originated in Czechoslovakia in 1977 and was credited to have begun the collapse of the Soviet Union and its empire. In response to the uprising in Tibet in 2008, Liu had organized a petition of 30 Chinese intellectuals calling on the Chinese Government to respect Tibetans’ rights, to cease the repression of their protests and to try to understand their grievances, and to allow them to exercise genuine autonomy as proposed by the Dalai Lama.

Barom Kagyu Chodrak Drupju Chuling Year of the Iron Ox (2148) 2021 Important Dates Message from Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche: The past Year 2020 has been extremely difficult and challenging for all living beings, not just for us, human beings but also for all the animals sharing our same living environment. Last year, our planet Earth experienced some of the most extreme natural disasters, including decimating bushfires in Australia and the US, destroying many properties and killing billions of animals; devastating floods in Indonesia; earthquakes in Turkey, China, Iran, Russia and India. And of course, there was the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic affecting everyone, all the people of the world. These disasters are very timely reminders of the Buddha’s teaching about the impermanence of our very short existence on Earth. Now, Rinpoche wholeheartedly wishes and prays for “better situation” for 2021, that is for a Safe, Happy and Healthy Year 2021, for all the Barom Kagyu supporters, all the Dharma brothers and sisters and all the students and their families and friends. May many wonderful things happen in your lives. May all your wishes in accordance with the Dharma be totally and completely fulfilled. May your dharma practice flourish and may all obstacles to your practice vanish so that you move quickly on the path to enlightenment. Finally, Venerable Sonam Tenzin Rinpoche and Venerable Lama Namsai wish to extend their “Tashi Delek” to everyone, students, supporters, families and friends, their best wishes for a very happy Tibetan New Year, the year of the Iron Ox 2148. Calendar and important practice days: In Buddhist traditions, certain days are considered especially auspicious for Dharma practices.

2014-15 Shamar Rinpoche's unwavering commitment to preserving the lineage was his clear priority, as 2013/14 evidenced by his response to the criticism he was receiving: “I understood very well that what was good for the Karma Kagyu tradition would not be very good for me as an individual under these circumstances. Yet, I sacrificed myself for the greater good in order to protect the lineage. The reason I chose to sacrifice myself was that I had already by that time taken on the role of leadership, in accord with my position as the Shamarpa. How could I ignore something so important in order to save myself from any hardship? I took this responsibility seriously, as is my duty.
