INTRODUCIION The first results of Western economic and political sanctions against the government of South Africa are in: Apartheid's supporters have been strengthened while those seeking reforms have been weakened. "I'he evidence of this is abundant: ' . ++ In the whites-only election last month, the ruling National Party (NP)was returned with even greater control over the Parliament than before. ++ In the election, the racially moderate Progressive Federal Party (PW) was replaced as the official opposition party in the Parliament by the pro-apartheid Conservative Party (CP). This means that for the first time since the institutionalization of apartheid in 1948, the Pretoria government will be criticized in 'the Parliament not for moving too slowly to abolish apartheid, but for moving too quickly. ++ U.S. influence in Pretoria has been reduced, as the South African government has rejected what it views as unacceptable foreign interference in its internal affairs. ++ Economic sanctions have not damaged the South African economy severely. Most South African producers have found ' new markets for their products. Further, sanctions have caused a short-term stimulus, as the economy moves to create its own substitutes for former imports. ++ To the extent that the effects of sanctions have been felt in South Africa, they have been felt by blacks--precisely the people they were supposed to help. ++ Disinvestment by U.S. corporations doing business in South Africa also has set back the anti-apartheid campaign. U.S. corporatioh have sold their manufacturing plants and assets to South African businessmen at firesale prices. -

CLERGY’S Resistance to VENDA HOMELAND’S INDEPENDENCE IN THE 1970S and 1980S S.T. Kgatla Research Institute for Theology and Religion University of South Africa [email protected] ABSTRACT The article discusses the clergy’s role in the struggle against Venda’s “independence” in the 1970s and 1980s, as well as resistance to the apartheid policy of “separate development” for Venda. It also explores the policy of indirect white rule through the replacement of real community leaders with incompetent, easily manipulated traditional chiefs. The imposition of the system triggered resistance among the youth and the churches, which led to bloody reprisals by the authorities. Countless were detained under apartheid laws permitting detention without trial for 90 days. Many died in detention, but those responsible were acquitted by the courts of law in the Homeland. The article highlights the contributions of the Black Consciousness Movement, the Black People Conversion Movement, and the Student Christian Movement. The Venda student uprising was second in magnitude only to the Soweto uprising of 16 June 1976. The torture of ministers in detention and the response by church leaders locally and internationally, are discussed. The authorities attempted to divide the Lutheran Church and nationalise the Lutherans in Venda, but this move was thwarted. venda was officially re-incorporated into South Africa on 27 April 1994. Une des actions humaines les plus fondamentales dans l'existence de l'homme est de dire, interpréter, et raconter de nouveau l'interprétation dans les mots, volontairement, sous forme d'histoires. C'est un éternel, se développer en spirales et un processus socialement construit. Le « récit est crucial dans la vie humaine d'arrangement pour tous que nous soyons, et tous ce que nous faisons, et tout ce que nous pensons et la sensation est basé sur des histoires ; toutes les deux nos histoires personnelles et histoires de notre communauté significative » (1995:215 de Webb-Mitchell). Ethics as the bridge between dogmatics and historical contexts Author: This article explores the question: what does it mean to do theology in South Africa today? 1 John W. de Gruchy It does so in three parts based on a narrative account of the author’s relationship with Johan Affiliation: Heyns from 1972–1990. Historia 55,2, November 2010, pp 121-146 The local role of a Wellington Afrikaner Broederbond branch, 1937–1994 Johan Zaaiman* Introduction The history of the Afrikaner Broederbond (AB) is well documented. Its functioning is closely examined in the books by Ivor Wilkins and H. Strydom,1 and by J.H.P. Serfontein.2 In Hermann Giliomee’s recent work, the influence of the AB has also received attention.3 According to Giliomee it is a misconception, perpetuated by South African historiography, that the Broederbond’s influence was on a par with that of the NP.4 The Afrikaner Broederbond itself has also produced histories of the society,5 and in 2009, Rev Nico Smith published his inside perspective on the AB.6 The aim of this article is to contribute to the discussion on the role of the AB in the politics of South Africa by focusing on the local functioning of the AB. This is done by examining the minutes of one of the oldest AB branches, the branch in Wellington, a Western Cape rural community, from 1937 to 1994.7 It is clear that the results of this study cannot be generalised to include other communities, especially those in the north of the country, because the political orientation of the southern and northern Afrikaners differed significantly, with those in the south being more accommodating, especially towards the coloured population.8 Another unique factor of Afrikaner politics in Wellington was that black people formed a very small minority of the local population; issues on coloureds thus featured more prominently in discussions in this AB branch. -

CONFESSING TO REMORSE ABOUT THE EVILS OF APARTHEID: THE DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH IN THE NINETEEN-EIGHTIES T. Dunbar Moodie, Emeritus Professor, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, also Research Associate, Society, Work and Development Institute (SWOP), University of the Witwatersrand Abstract: The transition in South Africa from apartheid to a constitutional democracy with equal rights for all has been described and celebrated in innumerable accounts. The best overview is probably Patti Waldmeir’s, Anatomy of a Miracle. What is missing from such stories, however, at least in English, is careful discussion of the role in the transformation process played by the Dutch Reformed churches (and other Afrikaner cultural organizations) in preparing Afrikaners for transition to democracy. The purpose of this paper is to examine theological debates and political struggles within the majority Nederduitse Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK) that led to public confession in 1990 of remorse about the evils of apartheid. The most fundamental change, however, came earlier, at the 1986 General Synod, well before F.W. de Klerk’s 1989 political leap forward. The paper seeks to describe personal, intellectual, cultural and political processes within the church that brought about this institutional transformation. The best book in English on change through the late 1970s and early 1980s in the NGK (the majority Dutch Reformed Church in South Africa with around 80% of white Afrikaans- speaking reformed church-goers) remains Apartheid, Change and the NG Kerk, by J.H.P. Serfontein.1 Based on years of extensive interviews with church people, it contains many appendices with translations of important documents as well as an admirable effort to situate church debates within political developments from 1978 to 1982. -

According to the Executive Mayor, Cllr Kgosientso Ramokgopa, the street name changes were necessary to ensure racial harmony and cohesion in the city. Nelson (Madiba) Mandela (1918 - ) Nelson Mandela is one of the most famous political leaders in the world. He was born in Qunu, near Umtata in the Eastern Cape and is a qualified lawyer. He was the first democratically elected South African president, serving from 1994 to 1999. Before his presidency, Mandela was a militant anti-apartheid activist and the leader and co-founder of Umkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC). In 1962, he was arrested and convicted of sabotage and other charges. He was sentenced to life imprisonment, for treason, by the apartheid government but was released in February 1990 after serving 27 years. Professor Johan Heyns (1928 – 1994) Johan Heyns was an influential Afrikaner Calvinist theologian and moderator of the general synod of the Nederduits Gereformeerde Kerk (NGK). He was assassinated at his home in Waterkloof Ridge in 1994. His death drew shock and outrage from all moderates in South Africa, including Nelson Mandela. Heyns was instrumental in the 1986 NGK decision to abandon its support for apartheid and brand it a sin. Although his murder was never officially solved, it is widely believed that it was directly related to his criticism of apartheid. Nelson Mandela paid homage to him as a martyr for his country and a soldier of peace. -

It is almost impossible to provide any representative overview of these many ways in which the message concerning his person and work has been and still is being appropriated and claimed in South African churches and communities. Th is paper briefl y surveys four of the dominant discourses about Jesus in contemporary South African society; namely, Jesus in the popular news and newspaper debates, academic circles and scholarship, the worship and spirituality of congregations and believers, and public opinion concerning social and political life. In all cases, major trends are pointed out, which raises the question of whether these developments perhaps involve forms of betrayal, and ways in which the fi gure and message of Jesus may be lost in these diverse forms of translation.
