The name was later changed to Veterans Day to honor the veterans of all foreign wars. In January 1919, representatives from the Allied nations gathered to discuss terms of peace. They met in the palace of Versailles outside Paris. The conference became known as the Paris Peace Conference. The treaty the Allies wrote with Germany was called the Treaty of Versailles. The United Kingdom, France, Italy, and the United States made up the “Big Four.” Their representatives were the key players in writing the treaty.

Armistice in the UK On 11 November 1918, an armistice between the Allied Powers and Germany was signed, ending the fighting on the western front during the First World War. The armistice was signed at 5am in a French railway carriage in Compiègne, and the guns stopped firing six hours later, at 11am. Under the terms of the armistice, Germany was to relinquish all the territory it had conquered since 1914, as well as Alsace-Lorraine. The Rhineland would be demilitarised, and the German fleet was to be interned in harbours of neutral countries or handed to the British. Announcing the terms in the House of Commons, the British Prime Minister, David Lloyd George, expressed relief at the “end[ing of] the cruellest and most terrible war that has ever scourged mankind”. The centenary of the signing of the armistice will be marked on 11 November 2018 by a series of events. The traditional national service of remembrance at the Cenotaph will take place, as well as the Royal British Legion’s veteran dispersal and march past the Cenotaph.

Piotr Wilczek, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland to the United States CONFERENCE IDEA: Why celebrate? Americans remember 11 November 1918 as “Armistice Day,” the end of fighting during World War I. Poles also celebrate this day, not only for a successful conclusion to the Great War, but to honor the restoration of Polish independence. After more than a century of subjugation, Polish patriots took back control of their lands. This started a new struggle, one that lasted another three years before independence was guaranteed. America strongly supported these efforts, starting with President Woodrow Wilson’s powerful endorsement of Polish independence. Less than two months after Armistice Day, America and Poland established diplomatic relations. From that point onward, even during the height of the Cold War, the two nations maintained cordial relations. Williamson, Jr. “The Armistice: November 11, 1918 An Ending and a Beginning: Reflections a Century Later” At 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month of November 1918, the guns fell silent. After four years of ghastly warfare, “All was quiet on the western front.” In the weeks since late September 1918 and talk of a possible armistice, a veritable revolution had occurred in Europe. Though formally called an armistice, American President Woodrow Wilson and his erstwhile European allies had converted the prospect of an armistice into a German surrender. In the process they hastened the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, doomed the Ottoman Empire, and brought the collapse of the German government in Berlin. While the final peace treaty would be signed at Versailles on June 28, 1919, the armistice of November 11 became the pivotal day in European history. When the changes were later assessed, they were monumental, fundamental, and not necessarily a harbinger of future peace. But the killing had stopped with a total 2 of nine million combat deaths and another ten million deaths from the flu and assorted medical issues. What had begun in late July 1914 as an expected short war had ended badly. I Twenty months ago, many of you were present when we analyzed America’s entry into the First World War on April 6, 1917. This Sunday, November 11th, is Veteran’s Day, or as my grandpa called it, “Armistice Day” - a US holiday designed to recognize the contributions of soldiers from all wars. Most of us know the “why” it’s a holiday, but do you know its origin? Do you know the birthplace of our National Anthem? On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as "the Great War." Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. (www.history.com) Let us not forget the sacrifices of those before us and amongst us. If you ever get the chance to visit Arlington National Cemetery, you will experience a movement of emotion like no other. Standing there amongst all those headstones, headstones as far as the eye can see, is truly such an amazing sight; one you would never forget. In April of 2006, I had the opportunity to visit Arlington. I found it to be the most incredible place I have ever been and will never forget that moving, emotional feeling of what each stone represented; what the Tomb of the Unknowns represented, the Vietnam Wall, and the Korean War Memorial, just to name a few of the many unbelievable pieces of history sites.

To the eyes of the British and French soldiers, worn out by four years of trench warfare, the Americans looked highly unlikely to hold the line against the Germans marching on Paris. As Jim Yardley wrote last year in the New York Times: World War I was the first time an American army had fought in a European war, and they were being delivered to the doorstep of a slaughterhouse. Their orders at the Marne were straightforward: Hold the line. Stop them. They did. Today, a century after the outbreak of World War I, the Second Battle of the Marne is considered the pivotal battle of the First World War, as Allied troops blunted the German advance and started the counteroffensive that would ultimately win the war. It also became the battle that helped shape the legend and character of the modern American military, especially the Marines, and signaled the arrival of the United States as a modern military power. In this, the 100th anniversary of World War I, the Kentucky Department of Veterans Affairs remembers and honors the Kentuckians among the four million American men and women in World War I who proved our worth to the whole world. Kentucky’s last World War I era veteran, Robley Rex, died six years ago at the great age of 107. No one alive today remembers what we naively called the War to End All Wars. It was that terrible.

    Armistice Day broadcast--Woodrow Wilson (November 10, 1923) Added to the National Registry: 2004 Essay by Richard Striner (guest post)* Woodrow Wilson Woodrow Wilson’s Armistice Day Speech in Perspective Woodrow Wilson’s radio address on November 10, 1923--on the eve of Armistice Day--must certainly stand as one of the most poignant and in some ways prophetic speeches of his life. It must also stand as one of the most ironic, or so it might be argued. Wilson had only a few months to live when he delivered the address. His life ebbing away, he told the American people that the happy memories of that November day in 1918 when the guns fell silent--the day on which the horrific slaughter of World War One at last came to an end-- would be “forever marred and embittered for us by the shameful fact that . we turned our backs on our associates and refused to bear any responsible part in the administration of the peace.” Wilson was referring to the fact that the United States had not joined the League of Nations. Even so, said Wilson, there was reason to hope that America would come to its senses over time and eventually shoulder the burdens of global leadership. “The whole field of international relations is in perilous confusion,” Wilson argued, but that very situation opened up a chance for the United States to resolve “to put self-interest away and once more formulate and act on the highest ideals and purposes of international policy.” Of course Wilson’s vision would not come true in any meaningful way until the “perilous confusion” of world affairs had degenerated by the 1930s into global fascist aggression that led to a direct attack upon the United States at Pearl Harbor in 1941.

In this case they have wrecked a railway bridge to cut what would otherwise be the route of the supply trains for the French army. The fact that a Red Cross train was on the bridge was not considered of any consequence. As a matter of fact, a train amidst the ruins of the bridge made the river all the more impossible as a water route. The “Nord” one sees on the engine is the French “North” and alludes to the French “Department” by that name.     World War I and The Art of War: WWI Posters from the Collection of Oscar Jacobson OKLAHOMA HISTORY CENTER EDUCATION DEPARTMENT The beginnings of World War I (WWI) in Europe began long before the United States joined the Great War. In June of 1914, the Archduke of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie were assassi- nated. The Austrians suspected the Serbians, and declared war one month later. The chain reaction after these events are what would become the Great War, or the First World War. The United States did not formally enter the war until it declared war on Germany in 1917. The war had many effects on the United States and Oklahomans before entrance into war in 1917. There were supporters and opponents of the war, opponents of the Selective Service Act, and effects on the United States' economy. Crop prices fell and rose, rations began to conserve for the war, and free speech was ques- tioned. Many of these issues lasted throughout the war.
