This accusation is examined in the context of Russia’s attempts to control the official historical narrative. Special attention is paid to the role of Russian cultural and democratic civic institutions, such as the Moscow library of Ukrainian literature and Memorial, in the micro- history of this publication. Deconstructing the judicial reaction of Russian lawmakers toward the Ukrainian publication, the study analyzes the Russian political elite’s attitudes toward the “Ukrainian” historical interpretations of Stalin’s terror and other aspects of common Soviet history, and demonstrates the interconnectedness of the preceding Soviet and modern Russian methods of control over education, history, and culture. Émigré Strategies Face Soviet and Ukrainian Realities

Emigre strategies face Soviet and Ukrainian realities 3 days ago at 14:44 | Taras Kuzio After the liquidation of the organized nationalist underground in Ukraine (UHVR [Ukrainian Supreme Liberation Council], UPA [Ukrainian Insurgent Army], OUN [Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists]) by the early 1950s, emigre nationalists followed two different strategies in the next four decades towards their goal of liberating Ukraine. Both strategies had their own rationale but they also had positive and negative consequences. The external representation (zp) UHVR, and the Prolog Research and Publishing House it established in 1952, understood that this was a new era and adopted a strategy of not establishing underground groupsin Soviet Ukraine. Theyadopted a new strategy aimed at the development of“peaceful revolution” and strengthening of the opposition’s potential through non-violent means, decades before this same strategy was adopted in the Orange Revolution. Two Prolog leaders also headed the U.S. government-funded Radio Svoboda which played an important role in the provision of independent information to Soviet Ukraine. In contrast OUNb pursued a strategy common to all organized emigre political parties of building underground structures in Soviet Ukraine. As developments showed, the KGB was only too happy to assist them in this endeavour. Prolog was not a typical emigre organization but a research think tank and publishing company that also undertook covert activities vis-a-vis Soviet Ukraine. zpUHVR/Prolog supported opposition groups and dissident movements, including national communist tendencies within the Communist Party of Ukraine.

Taras Hunczak Shukhevych and the Nachtigall Battalion: Moscow Fabrications about the Ukrainian Resistance Movement In this article I will not be responding to the numerous fabricated stories that are still being published in newspapers and books in Russia and elsewhere, which portray the freedom fighters of the Ukrainian resistance movement — the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) or the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) — as “fascists.” Even in Ukraine today there are still significant numbers of people who maliciously defame those who sacrificed their lives for their country’s freedom and independence. Clearly, certain individuals find it easier to make their “scholarly” careers by issuing groundless accusations. Where some of these accusers are concerned, this type of allegation is an unmistakable holdover from the Soviet propaganda era. In the Russian Federation, in particular, it is a matter of state policy to denigrate all past and present efforts of Ukrainians to be free in their own independent state. The decree issued on 14 October 2006 by President Viktor Yushchenko of Ukraine, whose goal was to bring about reconciliation between the veterans of the Red Army and the members of the Ukrainian resistance movement, was immediately criticized in an article published in a Moscow newspaper.1 Thus, it is hardly a surprise — indeed, it was to be expected — that several individuals recently publicly accused the Commander in Chief of the UPA General Roman Shukhevych and the Nachtigall Battalion for crimes they did not commit. Should one waste time arguing with people who make baseless accusations against Ukraine’s resistance movement? I think not. It is more effective to convey to readers who desire to learn the truth about the dramatic and often tragic events of World War II in Ukraine by showing them evidence based on solid documentation.

My Biography I was born in Ternopil on 19 January 1912. I took part in revolutionary activities from the time I was a gymnasium student. In 1928 I joined the underground nationalist youth organization Iunatstvo, the task of which was the nationalist revolutionary education of Ukrainian youth. It also prepared young people to struggle against the occupation and organized sabotages of Polish national holidays, which we were ordered to celebrate, such as the anniversary of the founding of the Polish state, the occupation of Lviv, and so forth. In 1929, I graduated with distinction from the classical Ukrainian gymnasium in Ternopil. From 1929 until my imprisonment for a rather long period (1934) I studied law and philosophy in Lviv and then for a short time in Cracow. After graduating from gymnasium I took over the district and later regional leadership of the OUN in Ternopil. In 1930, I was imprisoned for two and a half months in connection with a large anti-Polish sabotage action in western Ukraine. In the autumn of 1931, I became editor of the underground youth magazine Iunak at the Homeland Executive of the OUN in Lviv and supervisor of youth education. In the spring of 1932, I became the ideological and political leader of the OUN Homeland Executive in western Ukraine, editor-in-chief of all underground OUN publications, and chief of the OUN department of education.

Another task of this publication is to analyze planned and commit- ted attempts on his life. The methodology of the research is based on a combination of general scientific (analysis, synthesis, generalization) and special-historical (historical-genetic, historical-typological, historical-systematic) methods with the principles of historicism, systemicity, scientism and verifica- tion. The scientific novelty of the study is that for the first time in Ukrainian liberation movement his- toriography the structure and peculiarities of the functioning of the ZCh OUN leader’s security guards have been clarified, on the basis of previously unknown archival documents. The coverage of this topic not only supplements the biographical research devoted to Stepan Bandera but also considers the re- condite episodes of the ZCh OUN Security Service (hereinafter – SB) activity. Conclusion. The analysis of Stepan Bandera security guards’ activity reveals both its advantages and disadvantages acquired during its advance. It was ascertained that the security unit was a part of the SB ZCh OUN. The first guard-commander was Mykhailo Banias – «Grytsko», he headed several junior guards.
