    Sociophonetics of Popular Music: Insights from Corpus Analysis and Speech Perception Experiments Andy M. Gibson This dissertation is submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Linguistics Department of Linguistics University of Canterbury New Zealand September 2019 To my Dad, who taught me the joy of climbing hills on blustery days. Abstract This thesis examines the flexibility and context-sensitivity of speech perception by look- ing at a domain not often explored in the study of language cognition — popular music. Three empirical studies are presented. The first examines the current state of sociolinguis- tic variation in commercial popular music, while the second and third explore everyday listeners’ perception of language in musical and non-musical contexts. The foundational assumption of the thesis is that the use of ‘American English’ in song is automatic for New Zealand singers, and constitutes a responsive style that is both accurate and consistent. The use of New Zealand English in song, by contrast, is stylised, involving an initiative act of identity and requiring effort and awareness. This will be discussed in Chapter 1,where I also introduce the term Standard Popular Music Singing Style (SPMSS) to refer to the US English-derived phonetic style dominant in popular song. The first empirical study will be presented in Chapter 2. Using a systematically selected corpus of commercial pop and hip hop from NZ and the USA, analysis of non-prevocalic and linking /r/, and the vowels of the bath, lot and goat lexical sets confirm that SPMSS is highly normative in NZ music.

Ordinarily I demur from any opportunity to add one more item to my inventory of possessions. Nonetheless, the location of the event was on my street and only six addresses down. I made my approach and slowly realized it was a two flat I had privately dubbed “the house with the Nazi gate,” due to its wrought iron entry containing a design element, which incorporated the swastika. (Though the quasi-Greek cross design preceded the twentieth century scourge of Nazism, the roots of the ideogram in South and East Asia which became a representation of the inexorable wheel of history vanish into the past.) I opened that gate and entered. Inside I found a handful of people puttering amidst the belongings of a man who I had often seen on the front porch, engaged in the act of combing his dog’s fur. I pawed through a handful of books and found nothing of interest. A selection of records provided no discernible unifying theme, genre or focus.     ELON JOURNAL OF UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN COMMUNICATIONS Spring 2019 VOLUME 10, NO. 1 Joining the World of Journals Welcome to the nation’s first and only undergraduate research journal in communications. The website of the Council on Undergraduate Research lists more than 200 undergraduate research journals nationwide (http://www.cur.org/resources/students/undergraduate_journals/). Some of these journals focus on a discipline (e.g., Journal of Undergraduate Research in Physics), some are university-based and multidisciplinary (e.g., MIT Undergraduate Research Journal), and others are university-based and disciplinary (e.g., Harvard Political Review). The Elon Journal focuses on undergraduate research in journalism, media and communications. The School of Communications at Elon University is the creator and publisher of the online journal. The first issue was published in spring 2010 under the editorship of Dr. Byung Lee, associate professor in the School of Communications. The three purposes of the journal are: • To publish the best undergraduate research in Elon’s School of Communications each term, • To serve as a repository for quality work to benefit future students seeking models for how to do undergraduate research well, and • To advance the university’s priority to emphasize undergraduate student research. The Elon Journal is published twice a year, with spring and fall issues. Articles in the journal may be downloaded, reproduced and redistributed without permission for non- commercial purposes as long as the author and source are properly cited. Student authors retain copyright ownership of their works. A Celebration of Student Research I am so proud that Elon University is home to the nation’s only undergraduate research journal in communications.
