Isabella Academic Director: Onians, Isabelle Senior Faculty Advisor: Decleer, Hubert Project Advisor: Zafar, Nazneen The University of Richmond Visual Art and Media Studies Asia, India, Ladakh, Tar Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Nepal: Tibetan and Himalayan Peoples, SIT Study Abroad, Spring 2016 ABSTRACT In a plane high above the snow-capped jagged peaks and cracked earth of Ladakh, I stared down below with awe, wondering how people ever coaxed life from the soil in this mountain-desert landscape.
