As a huge fan of Stuck Mojo and the countless nu metal bands Lowery has been involved with, a quick YouTube search led me to the video for 'Better Place' and discovering a hard rock supergroup that have all the tools (and experience) to be more than just "another project". Accompanying Gontier and Lowery are guitarist Mike Mushok of Staind fame, and Rich Beddoe of Finger Eleven (perhaps the most least known of the lot, other than their one mega hit "One Thing" from way back in the day). Fans of any of these artists respective bands will enjoy what Saint Asonia have to offer. The music is hard-hitting and well produced, with some catchy vocal melodies and crushing guitar riffs. It's not anything new or unique, but then, it doesn't have to be. This is simple rock music at its finest. It's not overly ambitious or metaphorical (I stole the "metaphor" reference from someone else's review! Thanks!), it's very real music with personal lyrics that anyone can relate to. 'Let Me Live My Life', 'Fairy Tale', 'Trying to Catch up With the World' and of course, 'Better Place' are all highlights of this album that show a band with limitless potential. In fact, 'Better Place' alone (which has been on constant rotation for me since its release), makes this self-titled debut a worthy purchase. They're all back - Adam Gontier (Three Days Grace) is back with his gritty voice, Mike Mushok (Staind) is back with his talented guitar solos, Corey Lowery (most recently Eye Empire) is back with his heavy bass and Rich Beddoe (Finger Eleven) with his enthusiastic drumming. Only listened to TDG and F11 but if you are fans of all of these guys and their respective bands then this is definitely an album to check out - it's not necessarily ground breaking but it's heavy, raw and real hard rock, not the polished stuff just made for radio. Gontier says he won't write about something unless he's experienced it and it shows - 'Better Place' is the first track and proves he's not afraid to speak out against perhaps past band members and relationships and it's all relate-able and feels no need to create complex metaphors. There are a number of heavy, hard hitting songs like this one including 'Let Me Live My Life', 'FairyTale' and 'Dying Slowly' (my personal heavy favourites). Again not anything exceptional in the lyrics but certainly real and is exactly what TDG are lacking since Gontier left. But there are real stand out individual lines as well as whole versus and choruses (Gontier's raspy voice certainly adds the emotions) and the heavy guitar work is all complimented by great drumming with extra cool solos. What's great is that you can actually hear the heavy bass because as I said, this is not a polished, over-produced album but rather once tracks were recorded, only a couple electronics and grainy effects were added whilst keeping each individual sound all very clear for the listener. There are also some extremely soft songs on here, very much similar to most of Gontier's solo work. 'Waste My Time' is a great little love song and perhaps most listeners will recognise 'Trying To Catch Up With The World' from the solo stuff which is a great catchy and emotional tune. The album ends on a light, pleasant note with 'Leaving Minnesota'. Also, although not quite so soft, 'Even Though I Say' features acoustics and is most definitely one of the stronger songs here. Overall, if you've ever liked Gontier's lyrics and signature vocals and any of the heavy stuff of all the bands related to any of the members then you should enjoy this album. And even if you feel there's nothing special here or just don't like it (at least give it a few listens) you can agree that it's all real and emotional and nothing was made here just to get radio play and appeal to wider audiences. I would have given 4.5 max if possible because it's not breaking boundaries but from my own tastes and opinions it is a favourite of my music collection. But I believe with a few years of touring and spreading out all across the music scene (all the members are already there individually) these guys can create a signature sound whilst remaining true to who they are and am very excited for their future work!
