11 ACCESSIBILITY HISTORY ABOUT / Delft is the city of Delft Blue, William of DELFT Orange, Johannes Vermeer and technology. It is an innovative city with / a historic city centre. There are few cities in the Netherlands whose medieval structure has been preserved so well over the centuries. The historic city centre with its authentic canals and old churches is small and easy to walk.

CITY RIGHTS / The area in which Delft is located was once a wild fenland area. Reclamation of this part of the fenland probably began in the Middle Ages, at the start of the 11th century, with digging the Schie and Delf: what is now Oude Delft. The Count of Holland at that time established a court at Delf, around which a settlement arose. In 1246, Count William II granted city rights to Delf, which was still a small settlement at that time.

The city was later enlarged several times, the last in the year 1355. It is highly likely that a ‘t’ was added to the name Delf as part of the local dialect, resulting in the present-day use of the name Delft. The city rights were of great importance for the development of the city, partly because they allowed it to become self-governing, exercise jurisdiction and even control trade and levy excise duties.

12 TRADE / Delft was a city in which trade flourished. It was a market place for products from the surrounding countryside. The butter was especially famous. A second important product was beer. The water was not potable, but it was highly suitable for brewing good beer. Beer, with a small amount of alcohol that killed bacteria, was much ‘healthier’. By around 1600, Delft has two hundred breweries that worked not only for the local market but also exported.

The textile industry was also very important for the Delft economy. In 1389, Delft was allowed to build a seaport for trade: Delfshaven. It was connected to the Schie by a newly dug canal. Later, in the 17th century, Delft became world famous for its Delft Blue pottery.

DISASTERS / Delft was hit by a number of disasters. In 1536, a city fire reduced two-thirds of the buildings to ash, including a large part of the town hall and the main churches. In 1618, the town hall burned down again, after which Hendrick de Keyser designed the current building. The part of the Town Hall that did not burn down: the stone tower known as Het Steen, was constructed around 1200 and is probably the oldest building in Delft.
