ALAN SHEPARD Missions: MR-3, Apollo 14 Alan Shepard was one of the original ‘Mercury Severn’ astronauts, and became the second man and first American to go into space. He was pilot of the MR-3 mission which lasted for 15 minutes and achieved an altitude of 187 km, the flight came three weeks after Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. Shepard later commanded the Apollo 14 mission and became the fifth man to walk on the Moon. He piloted Mercury-Atlas 7, the fourth Project Mercury flight. After orbiting the Earth three times during a four hour and a half hour flight, the crew returned to Earth safely, although a targeting error meant they landed 250 miles off course. He later served as Command Pilot of the Gemini 5 mission which spent nearly 8 days in space, and in doing so broke the Soviet record for the duration of a space flight.
