Reality Is Broken a Why Games Make Us Better and How They Can Change the World E JANE McGONIGAL THE PENGUIN PRESS New York 2011 ADVANCE PRAISE FOR Reality Is Broken “Forget everything you know, or think you know, about online gaming. Like a blast of fresh air, Reality Is Broken blows away the tired stereotypes and reminds us that the human instinct to play can be harnessed for the greater good. With a stirring blend of energy, wisdom, and idealism, Jane McGonigal shows us how to start saving the world one game at a time.” —Carl Honoré, author of In Praise of Slowness and Under Pressure “Reality Is Broken is the most eye-opening book I read this year. With awe-inspiring ex pertise, clarity of thought, and engrossing writing style, Jane McGonigal cleanly exploded every misconception I’ve ever had about games and gaming. If you thought that games are for kids, that games are squandered time, or that games are dangerously isolating, addictive, unproductive, and escapist, you are in for a giant surprise!” —Sonja Lyubomirsky, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of California, Riverside, and author of The How of Happiness: A Scientific Approach to Getting the Life You Want “Reality Is Broken will both stimulate your brain and stir your soul. Once you read this remarkable book, you’ll never look at games—or yourself—quite the same way.” —Daniel H. Pink, author of Drive and A Whole New Mind “The path to becoming happier, improving your business, and saving the world might be one and the same: understanding how the world’s best games work. -

Richard Hunt Celebrates in Benton Harbor by Barbara Stodola Richard Hunt Has Reached a Point in Life Where He Could Have Settled Anyplace He Liked
THE TM 911 Franklin Street Weekly Newspaper Michigan City, IN 46360 Volume 21, Number 43 Thursday, November 3, 2005 Richard Hunt Celebrates in Benton Harbor By Barbara Stodola Richard Hunt has reached a point in life where he could have settled anyplace he liked. The place he chose was Benton Harbor, Michigan. Anyone familiar with the sculptor’s phenomenal success and internation- al connections might well wonder about this choice, until visiting his off-the-beaten-path studio -- and then the why’s and wherefore’s begin to fall into place. Richard Hunt, the acclaimed sculptor, stands beside models of his work at his studio in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The upcoming weekend is a good time to make the trip. It is 45 minutes from Michigan City, driving straight up the Red Arrow Highway and then turn- ing right before the St. Joseph River, veering toward the old downtown of Benton Harbor. Richard Hunt is opening his studio on Friday and Saturday evenings, to celebrate his 10th anniversary in the neighborhood he is helping to revitalize. His neighbors are celebrating too. On Saturday evening Nov. 5, a musical perfor- mance will take place at the First Presbyterian Church right up the street -- in fact, up the hill -- from Hunt’s studio. Three pianists will perform, each in a different style -- classical, jazz and gospel. The con- cert will be followed by an “Afterglow” at the artist’s studio. A special children’s event on Saturday after- noon will feature songs and stories by legendary per- Paying homage to the sea, this 50-foot-high sculpture of dazzling stain- former Ella Jenkins. -

“THE WIZARD of OZ” Lyrics by E. Y. HARBURG Music by HAROLD
“THE WIZARD OF OZ” For the Wicked Witch. Lyrics by E. Y. HARBURG Who began to twitch, and was reduced to just a stitch Of what was once the Wicked Witch. Music by HAROLD ARLEN Munchkin #1 We thank you very sweetly, for doing it so neatly. Munchkin #2 SOMEWHERE OVER THE RAINBOW You've killed her so completely, (Academy Award Best Song, 1939) That we thank you very sweetly. Glinda Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, Let the joyous news be spread, There's a land that I heard of The Wicked Old Witch at last is dead! Once in a lullaby. Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue, DING DONG! THE WITCH IS DEAD And the dreams that you dare to dream Really do come true. Munchkins Someday I'll wish upon a star Ding Dong! The Witch is dead. And wake up where the clouds are far Which old Witch? The Wicked Witch! Behind me. Ding Dong! The Wicked Witch is dead. Where troubles melt like lemon drops, Wake up - sleepy head, rub your eyes, get out of bed. Away above the chimney tops Wake up, the Wicked Witch is dead. That's where you'll find me. She's gone where the goblins go, Somewhere over the rainbow, bluebirds fly. Below - below - below. Birds fly over the rainbow. Yo-ho, let's open up and sing and ring the bells out. Why then, oh why can't I? Ding Dong the merry-oh, sing it high, sing it low. If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow, Let them know Why, oh why can't I? The Wicked Witch is dead! Mayor MUNCHKIN LAND As Mayor of the Munchkin City, In the County of the Land of Oz, Glinda I welcome you most regally.
