2 portàtils Quaderns Quaderns 27 ‘We can’t promise to do more than experiment.’ On Yugoslav experimental film and cine clubs in the sixties and seventies Ana Janevski 3 4 The starting point for this essay is experimental film in the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in all its facets;2 a cinema that made an important shift in the dominant filmic language of the time and proposed new and different thematic, aesthetic and production paradigms. In general, experimental film has been separated from the mainstream and for a significant amount of time it has predominantly been considered within the domain of marginal theory and practice. Also, the question of what constitutes ‘experimental film’, as well as settling the parameters of classification, has been one of the most contested questions. Although this could be a subject of another dissertation, it is interesting to note that, beside being called ‘experimental’ and ‘avant-garde’, this form of cinematic expression has also been named ‘visionary cinema’ (Paul Adams Sitney), ‘undependent cinema’ (Emory Menefee), ‘underground/independent’ cinema (Jonas Mekas), not to mention the principles of ‘anti-film’ and ‘alternative’ film, elaborated by Yugoslavian theory and practice, in Zagreb and Belgrade. What Jan-Christopher Horak wrote about the US tradition – that ‘in the earliest phases the American avant-garde movement cannot be separated from the history of amateur film’3 – holds true also for the Yugoslavian experimental tradition. Namely, in the former Yugoslavia, experimental film almost consistently derived from the tradition of so-called amateur film, whose base consisted in the numerous cinema clubs (kinoklub) that developed in all major ‘We can’t promise cities of the former federation, especially in the sixties and seventies. -

For more information, please contact us at [email protected] or visit our website at www.contemporarysee.org The Other Side of Socialism: History and Cinematic Memory of Socialism Nevena Daković The aim of this paper is to explore the cinematic history and memory of socialism and broadly of Yugoslavia throughout XXth century as narrativised and represented in the films of Mila Turajlić Cinema Komunisto (2010) and The Other Side of Everything (Druga strana svega, 2017). Accordingly the cinematic texts are understood as: 1) the texts of cultural memory that construct the remembrance of the past and history of Yugoslavia; 2) as cinematic lieux de memoire or field of tensions of memory and history, textual and metatextual layers, fiction and faction; 3) as texts that brilliantly perform the turn from “film about history” to being a “memory-making film” while keeping the two facets. The two case studies are contextualized within the previous tradition of Yugoslav cinema as well as within the larger group of archive films made in 2010s. Publications about monuments to fighters and victims of the Second World War in Yugoslavia began to appear in the late 1950s. They were dedicated to one or more monuments or memorial complexes. Over time, in tourist guides, among other sites, monuments and memorials began to be presented as a significant place worth a visit. During the second half of the 1970s, printing of special tourist guides dedicated only to monuments and memorial complexes started. Because of the popularity of monuments, a sticker album was also printed. The intention behind printing such publications was to inform citizens about monuments, but there was also an ideological side to it. Through books about monuments, the state and the Communist party wanted to emphasize again Yugoslav war efforts and the sacrifice that was made during the war. They used it as a propaganda tool in youth education, foreign diplomacy and overall state propaganda about the role of Yugoslav partisans, under the leadership of the Communist party, in the victory against fascism. COMBAT ACTIVITY OF THE ENEMY 1.1. The enemy occasionally provoked from infantry weapons in Sector North, by opening fire on Vitufa, Kuk and Vrtograd from the area of Donja Dreznica - Usce, and Citluk. MOS /Muslim Armed Forces/ opened infantry fire and used explosive devices on our positions along the frontline in Sector "Obrana Mostara" /Defence of Mostar/. Muslim forces occasionally provoked from infantry weapons, by opening fire on our positions in KovaCina, Aerodrom and Petak in Sector "Jug" /South/. 1.2 The Chetniks did not open fire on our positions today. 2. OUR FORCES 2.1 The "M.H. Cikota" Brigade in Sector "North" returned the fire at MOS from PZS /anti-aircraft machine-gun/ and from 88mm gun, with 7 /seven/ projectiles on Nazrajica Mahala. We fired two 120 mm MB /mortar/ shells on "Razvitak" building at 9:00 hrs and at 10:00 hours we fired two 88 mm MB shells on "Sipad' in Fejiceva Street. We fired two 120 mm MB shells on Muslim positions at the Bulevar between 10:00 and 10:15. At around 14:30 we fired two projectiles from a 120 mm gun on the Bulevar, just opposite to the Health Centre, when at least three enemy soldiers were killed. We fired six 82 mm MB shells on Northern Camp and Zalik during the day. From 8: 10 in the morning our tank was opening fire from Stotina during the whole day, and it fired 50 /fifty/ projectiles on Stari grad /the Old town/. -

These persecutions were committed on political, racial and religious grounds and included: a. The prolonged and routine imprisonment and confinement of Croat, Muslim and other non-Serb civilians in the detention facilities within Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, including prison camps in Vukovar, in and near VoCin, and in Bosanski Samac, Zvornik, Greater Sarajevo, BijeIjina, Mostar, Nevesinje and Brcko, as described in detail in paragraphs 28 to 30. e. The prolonged and frequent forced labour of Croat, Muslim and other non Serb civilians detained in the said detention facilities or under house arrest in their respective homes in Vukovar, Vocin, Bosanski Samac, Zvornik, Greater Sarajevo, Bijeljina, Mostar and Brcko. -

Abstract Yugoslav War Cinema: Shooting A Nation Which No Longer Exists Stephanie Baric From its inception following Worid War II, Yugoslav war cinema played a major role in representing and challenging the discourse of the nation. Films depicting the Partisan war experience during the "national war of liberation", the foundational narrative of socialist Yugoslavia, played a significant role in constructing and deconstructing Yugoslavia's revolutionary past. After the death of Tito in 1980, critical focus in cinema shiited away from the events of WW II to post-war Yugoslavia and the brutal anti-Stalinist purges following Yugoslavia's break with the Cominfom. -

Half Title Page Balkanization and Global Politics: Remaking Cities and Architecture Nikolina Bobic Ever-increasingly, countries, states and regions are voicing a desire to be autonomous through a process of balkanization. This book explores the historical emergence, interdisciplinary application and current socio-spatial reasons why more places are seeking self-governance around the world. The spatialization of balkanization is particularly addressed in terms of destruction and renewal through a detailed socio-political interrogation of architecture and the urban, including their changing symbolic and functional forms. The book offers a reworking of the concept of balkanization through a reflective and critical analysis. The particular attention on the city of Belgrade, including the 1990s dissolution of Yugoslavia through specific case study focus of Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia, provides insightful connections between balkanization, violent remaking and global politics. Against the detailed historical overview and prevailingly negative understanding of balkanization, a more positive instatement of balkanization for purposes of inclusivity is also presented.
