The southwestern part of the peninsula is resplendent Kushiro City with verdant woods, scores of lakes, swamps and marshlands, and beau- tiful coastlines. Kushiro, with a population of about 200,000, is the largest city in Eastern Hokkaido. It is known as a base for deep-sea fishing and also as Abashiri City being a "foggy town." Kushiro is a stepping-off point for tourist spots in eastern Hokkaido like Shiretoko and Akan.
