Dionysiac and Pyrrhic Roots and Survivals in the Zeybek Dance, Music, Costume and Rituals of Aegean Turkey
GEPHYRA 14, 2017, 213-239 Dionysiac and Pyrrhic Roots and Survivals in the Zeybek Dance, Music, Costume and Rituals of Aegean Turkey Recep MERİÇ In Memory of my Teacher in Epigraphy and the History of Asia Minor Reinhold Merkelbach Zeybek is a particular name in Aegean Turkey for both a type of dance music and a group of com- panions performing it wearing a particular decorative costume and with a typical headdress (Fig. 1). The term Zeybek also designates a man who is brave, a tough and courageous man. Zeybeks are gen- erally considered to be irregular military gangs or bands with a hierarchic order. A Zeybek band has a leader called efe; the inexperienced young men were called kızans. The term efe is presumably the survivor of the Greek word ephebos. Usually Zeybek is preceded by a word which points to a special type of this dance or the place, where it is performed, e.g. Aydın Zeybeği, Abdal Zeybeği. Both the appellation and the dance itself are also known in Greece, where they were called Zeibekiko and Abdaliko. They were brought to Athens after 1922 by Anatolian Greek refugees1. Below I would like to explain and attempt to show, whether the Zeybek dances in the Aegean provinces of western Turkey have any possible links with Dionysiac and Pyrrhic dances, which were very popular in ancient Anatolia2. Social status and origin of Zeybek Recently E. Uyanık3 and A. Özçelik defined Zeybeks in a quite appropriate way: “The banditry activ- ities of Zeybeks did not have any certain political aim, any systematic ideology or any organized re- ligious sect beliefs. -
Turkey Aerospace & Defense
TURKEY AEROSPACE & DEFENSE 2016 AEROSPACE TURKEY TURKEY AEROSPACE & DEFENSE 2016 Aerospace - Defense - Original Equipment Manufacturers Platforms - Clusters - Multinationals - Sub-Tier Suppliers Distinguished GBR Readers, Since the inception of the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries 30 years ago, significant steps have been taken to achieve the goals of having the Turkish armed forces equipped with modern systems and technologies and promoting the development of the Turkish defense industry. In the last decade alone, the aerospace and defense (A&D) sector's total turnover quadrupled, while exports have increased fivefold, reaching $5.1 billion and $1.65 billion in 2014, respectively. The industry's investment in research and development (R&D) reached almost $1 billion in 2014. The total workforce in the A&D industry reached 30,000 personnel, of which 30% are engineers. Even more remarkable, Turkey is now at the stage of offering its own platforms for both the local market and to international allies, and has commenced a series of follow up local programs. Although this progress has been achieved under the circumstances of a healthy and consistent political environment and in parallel with sustained growth in the Turkish economy, the proportion of expenditure for defense in the national budget and as a percentage of Turkey’s GDP has been stable. With the help of the national, multinational and joint defense industry projects that have been undertaken in Turkey by the undersecretariat, the defense industry has become a highly capable community comprising large-scale main contractors, numerous sub- system manufacturers, small- and medium-sized enterprises, R&D companies who are involved in high-tech, niche areas, research institutes, and universities. -

Biting Into Time Lora Sariaslan You Are Really Hungry, You Do Not Have
Biting into Time Lora Sariaslan You are really hungry, you do not have the energy or the means to go grocery shopping, and there isn’t anything in your fridge, what is the last resort? Menemen: a traditional Turkish dish made from eggs, tomato, and green peppers and commonly served with bread. Due to the list of ingredients, it is one of the cheapest dishes in Turkish cuisine, especially made by students in Turkey. Menemen, however, represents much more to the artist Suat Ogut, as in his words, “Anyone who knows me, knows that I love making menemen”. This is the statement that has led to the exhibition The Future of the Me-Mory-nemen, the love for a dish that represents more than the combination of eggs, tomatoes, pepper (and according to the cook/artist, a pinch of white feta cheese). But what does menemen really signify? It can be seen as the cozy, heart and body warming menu item that brings everyone together. Menemen can be seen as the staple single guy’s food, even if you do not have anything in your fridge, you can still concoct one… and it is also definitely a working class dish… The location of the installation in the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, historically a working class neighborhood also fits in perfectly with the working class origins of menemen. Ogut’s serendipitous decision of selecting a spot that has no pre-life in art is also noteworthy. Just as the combination of the ingredients leads to a completely new taste hence a new experience, what Ogut is putting his bite or foot into with The Future of the Me-Mory- nemen is a space of encounters. -

Letters from Vidin: a Study of Ottoman Governmentality and Politics of Local Administration, 1864-1877
LETTERS FROM VIDIN: A STUDY OF OTTOMAN GOVERNMENTALITY AND POLITICS OF LOCAL ADMINISTRATION, 1864-1877 DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By Mehmet Safa Saracoglu ***** The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Professor Carter Vaughn Findley, Adviser Professor Jane Hathaway ______________________ Professor Kenneth Andrien Adviser History Graduate Program Copyright by Mehmet Safa Saracoglu 2007 ABSTRACT This dissertation focuses on the local administrative practices in Vidin County during 1860s and 1870s. Vidin County, as defined by the Ottoman Provincial Regulation of 1864, is the area that includes the districts of Vidin (the administrative center), ‛Adliye (modern-day Kula), Belgradcık (Belogradchik), Berkofça (Bergovitsa), İvraca (Vratsa), Rahova (Rahovo), and Lom (Lom), all of which are located in modern-day Bulgaria. My focus is mostly on the post-1864 period primarily due to the document utilized for this dissertation: the copy registers of the county administrative council in Vidin. Doing a close reading of these copy registers together with other primary and secondary sources this dissertation analyzes the politics of local administration in Vidin as a case study to understand the Ottoman governmentality in the second half of the nineteenth century. The main thesis of this study contends that the local inhabitants of Vidin effectively used the institutional framework of local administration ii in this period of transformation in order to devise strategies that served their interests. This work distances itself from an understanding of the nineteenth-century local politics as polarized between a dominating local government trying to impose unprecedented reforms designed at the imperial center on the one hand, and an oppressed but nevertheless resistant people, rebelling against the insensitive policies of the state on the other. -
