March 29, Right before the X-Men begin their counter-attack, Fantomex takes off his mask and reveals himself to be Xavier, who now calls himself X. After analyzing Suspect X's blood, Hank finds out that Suspect X is just a normal mutant but with his X-gene on a different chromosome. April 26, John Cassaday's art is pretty good, though I don't find it necessarily worthy of all the fawning it seems to have gotten. This first half of Joss Whedon's run with the X-Men covers two story arcs. Jun 14, RG rated it it was amazing. Proteus takes control of a village in the Scottish Highlands, who intends to bring the astral plane to reality. Venom 23—42, Mighty Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis. Whedon's first two six-issue arcs felt largely like standalone, one-off stories. Joss Whedon does not disappoint, and even if I didn't understand every reference to the "current events" of mutants at the time it was written, it struck me as good stuff. Return to Book Page. This team protected the Mannites a group of super powered, genetically engineered children from Death, a horseman of Apocalypse. X-Force vol. The idea behind the title adjective du jour is that the X-men, in an attempt to turn the tide in the public relations battle they've been losing and improve an image that's been tarnished by whatever's been happening all these years, are trying to "astonish" the public. The ending is bittersweet in a way that really works, and thoughtfully leaves in the ways to undo it. It's dark but sometimes very funny, and the characters are all interesting. Wolverine and Frost are captured by Mentallo, who intends to bury them alive when the volcano erupts, but are freed by Cyclops. March 20, There isn't much depth, but it is full of the wonderful snarkiness that I have long associated with Joss Whedon. Infinity Wars by Gerry Duggan. None of my favorite X-Men, aside from Emma, are here. Moments later Ord and Danger burst into the room, where they are all forcibly teleported away by S. Meanwhile, Mentallo is dispatched by Roxxon Corporation to Monster Island, which the corporation intends to drill for oil. Astonishing X-Men: Ultimate Collection Volume 2 Writer It wasn't until a few months ago, literally twenty goddamn years, that I rediscovered my love for comics. In the end, Shadowcat phases inside the Breakworld bullet, and when it reaches Earth, makes it intangible, so that the bullet passes through Earth. Liu's run completely rebooted the series' setting and lineup, which had until this point featured Cyclops and Emma Frost leading the X-Men. Astonishing X-Men ended with issue 68 in October , wrapping up many loose ends of the run: Iceman coming to terms with the damage he has dealt, Northstar and Kyle ensuring their future together, and Warbird accepting her role on the X-Men and her home on Earth. This should be essential reading for every X-Men fan and this is one of the best formats to enjoy it in. Writer Marjorie Liu and artist Mike Perkins took over the Astonishing X-Men creative team as of issue 48 in March , writing until the series' cancellation in issue There's a lot of action, but there's also a lot of character work. I love this run for all of the reasons that I love Whedon. Torn is a bit weird, and works better on a reread. Jessica Jones: The Pulse. Secret Warriors. Bleeding Cool. Gambit and Wolverine track the alien down to Indiana, where they enlist the aid of a local human girl who helps discover its origins and intentions. I also gotta say the best two stand out moments in the whole volume was when 1 Kitty came so hard while doing Colossus that she phased through the floor and 2 the next morning when they come down stairs together all tired and Wolverine is sitting at the kitchen table. There are a few twists in the plot, none of which were expected. X-Men , and Battle of the Atom. October 29, Joss Whedon. In the end, against Scott's wishes, Agent Brand is brought in who lets the X-Men know that the Ghost Box is a dimensional portal between different realities. Children of the Atom S. Emma frost is a Whore but whatever, she looks good with the ice lipstick. With this arc, Whedon brought back Colossus four years after his comic book death in Fury Annual 4 and Avengers Annual 2.

1 Superhuman Ethics Class Never let it be said that superheroes don’t take ethics seriously! After his fellow Avengers engaged in some questionable activities during an inter- stellar conflict in the “Galactic Storm” storyline, Captain America initiated a “Superhuman Ethics” class; later, the young heroes-in-training at Avengers Academy took the same class as part of their regular curriculum (taught by perennial screw-up Hank Pym).1 Even though the situations faced by superheroes may seem extraordi- nary, often involving aliens, wizards, or time travelers, most of them actually boil down to the same issues each of us face on a regular basis: the right ways to manage our interactions with other people given the various ways we can affect them in good ways and bad. We may not have super-strength or fire energy bolts from our eyes, but we can still use our very human abilities and the tools at our disposal to help or hurt people (including our- selves). Even if we’re of a mind to help people—like the heroes we are— questions nonetheless arise regarding when to offer help, how to do it when we decide to, and who to help if we have to make choices or set priorities. We also have to consider that the help we offer may come at a cost, not just to ourselves but possibly to other people, which also deserves consideration. Compared to the complexities of moral decision-making, all of the flying, punching, and mind-reading might seem like the easier part of a hero’s day! But these ethical dilemmas are the types of problems that we in the real world face all theCOPYRIGHTED time in our ordinary lives, and MATERIAL in the comics they lend an important sense of humanity to even the most super of heroes.

The Incredible Hulk Monster, Man, Hero Dana McKnight Texas Christian University hen Marvel Comics introduced The Incredible Hulk in 1962, the following question was displayed prominently within a bold yellow question mark on W the front page: “Is he man or monster or…is he both?”1 Today, it seems easy to dismiss questions about the Incredible Hulk being a monster by merit of the popular Marvel Universe films, which brought the Incredible Hulk to a wide audience. I suspect that most Americans recognize the Incredible Hulk as a member of the Avengers: a hero, not a monster. However, when the Incredible Hulk first made his debut, Stan Lee expected his readers to wonder whether or not the Hulk would be a villain or a hero.2 Drawing from the first six issues of The Incredible Hulk I will discuss how the Incredible Hulk is simultaneously a hero and a monster, both an allegory of the military might of the United States in the atomic age and of the tenuous relationship between security and safety manifest in the uncontrolled destructive power of nuclear weapons. I will close with a glimpse into the contemporary post-9/11 Hulk. Man or Monster? First, it is cogent to get back to the “man or monster” question posed by Stan Lee in the very first issue of The Incredible Hulk, because the Hulk was both a man, Bruce Banner, and a monster, the Hulk. The “man-or-monster” question is not new and was 1 Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, “The Coming of the Hulk,” The Incredible Hulk, no.
