One of them is manifested as unification, overlapping, or globalization of culture rhythms. It may be accounted for by the ëopennessí of the world, diversification and intensification of communication. Another is more coloured, detailed, and specific, as it is related to the investigation of national and regional cultures and their particularity. Comparative approach is one of the means of describing national culture phenomena that opens an opportunity of addressing the characteristics of a particular national culture in the context of the processes of other cultures. This kind of perspective provides for marking the regularities, similarities, influences, and borrowings of the compared cultures, their kinds or historical processes, as well as revealing in a more manifold way the specificity of ëoneís owní culture among ëotherí cultures. In order to take up the studies of the specific character of culture regions in a comparative aspect, in 2005 Nordic ñ Baltic ñ Russian Network in Comparative Cultural Studies was formed in the framework of the programme Nordplus Neighbour founded by the Nordic Council of Ministers. Its activities are coordinated by the Institute of Comparative Studies of Daugavpils University Faculty of the Humanities. Up to now the network has united more than thirty researchers from Norway, Latvia, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden, and Russia who are engaged in Baltic and Nordic comparative culture studies. The first research conference of the network participants Communication as ëtranslatioí: Nordic ñ Baltic ñ Russian Cultural Dialogues took place in Daugavpils on 9 ñ 11 May 2006. Its work was organized in two thematic sections. One of them was dealing with Nordic, Baltic, and Russian culture contacts regarding the specific character of the cultural phenomena of these spaces in a synchronic or diachronic aspect. Another section was dedicated to the centenary of the Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsenís death. The present collection entails research papers that were presented at the conference. It is the first issue in the research publication series Comparative Studies, one of the branches of which will be dedicated to publishing the materials of research conferences, seminars, discussions of the Nordic ñ Baltic Network in Comparative Cultural Studies. The publications of the present collection are structured in three chapters. Chapter 1 Comparative Research of Nordic ñ Baltic ñ Russian Cultural Phenomena includes articles on the historically and phenomenologically diverse modes of communication of Lithuanian ñ Danish, Norwegian ñ Lithuanian, Latvian ñ Estonian, Latvian ñ Swedish, Nordic ñ German and other culture spaces, e.g., the idea of Balto Scandia, the image of Riga, masculinities, etc. Chapter 2 Linguistic Discourse of Comparative Cultural studies entails articles referring to the linguistic discourse of comparative cultural studies that regard paremiography and compound formation as the way of

Darby Dyar, Astronomy Approved By: Christopher Condit, Geology CE Type: Departmental Honors Project Using a gridded version of maritan topography with the computer program Gridview, this project studied the depth-diameter relationship of martian impact craters. The work encompasses 361 profiles of impacts with diameters larger than 15 kilometers and is a continuation of work that was started at the Lunar and Planetary Institute in Houston, Texas under the guidance of Dr. Walter S. Keifer. Using the most ‘pristine,’ or deepest craters in the data a depth-diameter relationship was determined: d = 0.610D 0.327 , where d is the depth of the crater and D is the diameter of the crater, both in kilometers. This relationship can then be used to estimate the theoretical depth of any impact radius, and therefore can be used to estimate the pristine shape of the crater. With a depth-diameter ratio for a particular crater, the measured depth can then be compared to this theoretical value and an estimate of the amount of material within the crater, or fill, can then be calculated. The data includes 140 named impact craters, 3 basins, and 218 other impacts. The named data encompasses all named impact structures of greater than 100 kilometers in diameter.

Email: [email protected] Manuscript received: 30 December 2013, accepted: 26 May 2014 Abstract In Germany, mosasaur remains are very rare and only incompletely known. However, the earliest records date back to the 1830s, when tooth crowns werefoundinthechalkoftheIsleofRugen.¨ A number of prominent figures in German palaeontology and geosciences of the 19th and 20th centuries focused on these remains, including, among others, Friedrich von Hagenow, Hermann von Meyer, Andreas Wagner, Hanns Bruno Geinitz and Josef Pompeckj. Most of these works were only short notes, given the scant material. However, the discovery of fragmentary cranial remains in Westphalia in 1908 led to a more comprehensive discussion, which is also of historical importance, as it illustrates the discussions on the highly controversial and radical universal phylogenetic theory proposed by Gustav Steinmann in 1908. This theory saw the existence of continuous lines of descent, evolving in parallel, and did not regard higher taxonomic units as monophyletic groups but as intermediate paraphyletic stages of evolution. In this idea, nearly all fossil taxa form part of these lineages, which extend into the present time, and natural extinction occurs very rarely, if ever. In Steinmann’s concept, mosasaurs were not closely related to squamates but formed an intermediate member in a anagenetic chain from Triassic thalattosaurs to extant baleen whales.

Georges azonban visszautasítja a bohém életmódot, szinte görcsösen is- mételgetve, meggyőzni akarván magát, hogy ő jó családból való úrifiú: „rendes, kedves, tekintélytisztelő úrifiú vagyok, polgári karriert akarok befutni, arról álmodozom, hogy diplomata leszek, miért vállalom ezt a megfoghatatlan, indokolatlan sorsközösséget e szétmállott, elhullott, szemétládába való emberekkel? Talán én is a kívülmaradtak közé tartozom?”2 végül megszakítja rövid, de viharos kapcsolatukat.

    APPENDIX I LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE LUNAR AND MARTIAN NOMENCLATURE A large number of names of craters and other features on the Moon and Mars, were accepted by the IAU General Assemblies X (Moscow, 1958), XI (Berkeley, 1961), XII (Hamburg, 1964), XIV (Brighton, 1970), and XV (Sydney, 1973). The names were suggested by the appropriate IAU Commissions (16 and 17). In particular the Lunar names accepted at the XIVth and XVth General Assemblies were recommended by the 'Working Group on Lunar Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr D. H. Menzel. The Martian names were suggested by the 'Working Group on Martian Nomenclature' under the Chairmanship of Dr G. de Vaucouleurs. At the XVth General Assembly a new 'Working Group on Planetary System Nomenclature' was formed (Chairman: Dr P. M. Millman) comprising various Task Groups, one for each particular subject. The article discusses the notion of the Other as it reveals itself through the content of the Lithuanian R press media in the time period between 1926 and 1940. Articles describing the performances of the Lithuanian R ESENTATION OF “THE OF ESENTATION National Theatre are discussed. The content of these articles shows that Russian artists working in independent DU NALISM Lithuania were considered as a dangerous Other who exploits Lithuania ideologically and economically. Although such artists as Andrius Oleka-Žilinskas, Mikhail Chekhov, Vera Solovjova and others came to work in Kaunas in order to escape the Soviet regime, they were accused in Lithuania as being pro-Bolshevik and pro-Communist. The research shows that Lithuanian theatre journalists only considered Russians as dangerous to the young independent state but not Jewish or Polish artists. One can presume that Lithuania feared the communist regime R so much that it tried to avoid any collaboration, including this with artists, which could harm the development of THE ING the independent state. In spite that Russian theatre artists enriched Lithuanian National Theatre, they were forced to leave Lithuania and never come back.
