Franchet (1834-1900) has described near 60 taxa in the genus Primula L., 16 taxa from them were discussed in a first publication. Our current paper will continue the researches devoted to the typi- fication of Primula names, on the base of expert studying the specimens in herbaria BM, E, G, K, LE, MHA, MW, NS, NSK, P, W, WU, Z and open databases. In 1886 Franchet published an article: “Observations sur deux Primula monocarpiques de la Chine et descriptions d’espèces nouvelles de la Chine et du Thibet oriental” and described 11 new species: P. davidii Franch., P. forbesii Franch., P. heucherifolia Franch., P. incisa Franch., P. malacoides, Franch. P. malvacea Franch., P. membranifolia Franch., P. moupinensis Franch., P. oreodoxa KEY WORDS Franch., P. ovalifolia Franch. and P. poissonii Franch. For P. davidii and P. heucherifolia we found only one E. Drake del Castillo, herbarium sheet for each and they will be holotypes. For eight species: P. forbesii, P. malacoides, P. malvacea, A. David, P. membranifolia, P. moupinensis, P. oreodoxa, P. ovalifolia and P. poissonii were selected lectotypes from several J.M. Delavay, type specimens, herbarium sheets. Franchet (1834-1900) a décrit près de 60 taxons dans le genre Primula L., dont 16 ont fait l’objet de discussions dans une première publication. Notre présent article poursuit les recherches consacrées à la typification des noms dePrimula , sur la base de l’étude experte des spécimens dans les herbiers BM, E, G, K, LE, MHA, MW, NS, NSK, P, W, WU, Z et dans les bases de données en ligne. En 1886, A.R. Franchet publia un article : « Observations sur deux Primula monocarpiques de la Chine et descriptions d’espèces nouvelles de la Chine et du Thibet oriental » et y décrivit 11 nouvelles MOTS CLÉS espèces. This study attempted to improve seed germination by testing the effect of several treatments including dry after-ripening (DAR), light, cold stratification (CS) and temperature gradient treatments. DAR increased germination at 15/5 and 25/15°C, as compared with fresh seeds. DAR seeds germinated significantly better (˃ 80%) at higher temperatures (20-28°C) than at lower (10°C, < 20%; 15°C, < 30%) and extreme high temperatures (30°C, < 55%; 32°C, 0%). Incubation at alternating temperature (25/15°C) did not significantly improve germination; whereas at 15/5°C germination increased significantly, compared with the corresponding constant temperature (20 and 10°C, respectively). DAR seeds had a strict light requirement at all temperatures.

It includes popular as well as serious scientific works in foreign languages as well as in English. References cover all aspects of the giant panda--its discovery, evolution, physiology, anatomy, behavior, reproduction, feeding habits, and diseases. This bibliography is divided into four sections and is arranged alphabetically by author. Both articles and books are included. The first section begins in 1936 when the first giant panda, Su-Lin, was brought to the United States and covers the next two decades (1936-1956). The second section covers the next 20 years (1957-1977). During this period more giant pandas found their way to the Western World--Chi-Chi at the London Zoo, An-An at the Moscow Zoo, Ying-Ying and Pe-Pe at the Mexican Zoo. Chia-Chia and Ching-Ching at the London Zoo, and of course, our own famous pandas, Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing at the National Zoo*. Abstract: The background to this document is found in the history of China’s Shu Roads that passed through the Qinling and Ba Mountains for many years. The roads have linked the northern and southern parts of western China since the earliest records and probably before. In all that time, the common description of the Shu roads was that they were “hard”. In the Yuan, Ming and Qing periods when China was open and accessible, foreign travellers visited the Shu Roads and some left accounts of their travels. Among the early travellers were Catholic Missionaries who moved into the west of China to spread Christianity. This document first outlines the historical environment of the open periods and then identifies various events and Catholic Priests who seem to have travelled the Shu Roads or have left descriptions that are of interest today. The main focus of this document is on the recorded experiences of Missionaries mostly from the Jesuit, Franciscan and Vincentian orders of the Catholic Church of Rome who travelled to the Hanzhong Basin. The main items include: Marco Polo’s (circa 1290) account of travels in China which many Priests who arrived later had read to find out about China; Jesuit Fr. Étienne Faber’s travels to Hanzhong in 1635; Jesuit Fr. Martino Martini’s description of Plank Roads in his Atlas of China in 1655; Franciscan Fr.

The first confirmed records of Agrostis scabra Willd. are reported from a northeastern Chinese province, Jilin. This extends the native range of the species into China. The recent Flora of China does not include A. scabra. IT may be at first a matter of surprise to many that an alien by nationality and religion, a Roman Catholic Frenchman, should come before this learned Society to discourse on the life and labours of a British Protestant Missionary. A few words, however, will show that there are strong reasons for my taking up some of your valuable time with an account of the good work done by our late friend. The collection includes his extensive correspondence written between 1899 and 1930 to Arnold Arboretum staff, mainly Charles Sprague Sargent (1841-1927), the Arboretum's first director; copies of his letters to other Arboretum explorers and colleagues such as Joseph Charles Francis Rock (1884-1962), David Fairchild (1869- 1954), Frank Nicholas Meyer (1875-1918) Alfred Rehder (1863-1949), and members of the Veitch Nurseries in England. Other material includes field and plant collection notes, diaries, account books, shipping lists, maps, and manuscripts of both published and unpublished works. There are Chinese and other travel documents, letters of recommendation, certificates and material relating to Wilson's life as a student and his early work as a gardener. There is an extensive collection of clippings from newspapers and copies of articles from botanical and horticultural journals.
