Nov. 1: Laurann Gilbertson— Norwegian Folk Art in America: Past, Present, and Future

Explore folk art traditions through historical objects in Vesterheim Museum's collection. Then consider what is "traditional" while looking at pieces made today by artists working "within the tradition." Examples will include rosemaling, textiles, woodcarving, and knife- making. What does the future hold for Norwegian folk art in America? Is there a place for hand skills, tradition, and ethnicity in our increasingly modern and global lives? Gilbertson will share some possible answers. Laurann Gilbertson is Chief Curator for Vesterheim, The National Norwegian-American Museum and Heritage Center located in Decorah, Iowa.
