Johann Paul von Westhoff's (1656-1705) solo violin works, consisting of Suite pour le violon sans basse continue published in 1683 and Six Suites for Violin Solo in 1696, feature extensive use of multiple stops, which represents a German polyphonic style of the seventeenth- century instrumental music. However, the Six Suites had escaped the public's attention for nearly three hundred years until its rediscovery by the musicologist Peter Várnai in the late twentieth century. This project focuses on polyphonic writing featured in the solo violin works by von Westhoff. In order to fully understand the stylistic traits of this less well-known collection, a brief summary of the composer, Johann Paul Westhoff, and an overview of the historical background of his time is included in this document.

    Hymnody and Liturgics MUSC205 Fall Semester, 2018 Tuesday, Thursday, 10:30-11:20 Prof. Dennis Marzolf YFAC 209 [email protected] 507-317-9584 Proposed Syllabus, August 3, 2018 Course Description: The history and development of hymnody and liturgical forms in the Western Church, especially as they relate to the Lutheran Divine Service, pedagogy and devotion. Special emphasis on the chorale and hymnody of the traditions of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod. The course integrates the academic disciplines of music, history and theology. Course objectives: Students will demonstrate a conversant knowledge of hymnody in the liturgical life of the church, and articulate the unique doctrinal posture of the Lutheran church as it is reflected in the liturgy of the church. Students are invited to grow in appreciation of the liturgy as a means of Gospel proclamation and teaching in the church, school and home. Hopefully all the students will discover some new “friends” in the world of the Christian worship as a result of this class. By the end of the term students will be able to: 1. identify the four liturgical blueprints of the western Christian tradition, and 2. relate the practices of song to those blueprints (How is the song of the Office different from the Mass, for instance…) 3. explain the relationship between the rule of faith (doctrine) and the way of prayer (liturgy). They will also be able to 4. identify the major themes, personalities, and dates of various eras and events in the history of Christian worship; (Music Outcome 5, religion Outcome 3) 5. describe their longterm impact upon the patterns and content of the liturgy and hymnody of the church.

Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727) to David Lang’s the little match girl passion (2007) Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Giselle Wyers Associate Professor of Choral Music and Voice The themes of suffering and social conscience permeate the history of the sung passion genre: composers have strived for centuries to depict Christ’s suffering and the injustice of his final days. During the past eighty years, the definition of the genre has expanded to include secular protagonists, veiled and not-so-veiled socio- political commentary and increased discussion of suffering and social conscience as socially relevant themes. This dissertation primarily investigates David Lang’s Pulitzer award winning the little match girl passion, premiered in 2007. David Lang’s setting of Danish author and poet Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Match Girl” interspersed with text from the chorales of Johann Sebastian Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (1727) has since been performed by several ensembles in the United States and abroad, where it has evoked emotionally visceral reactions from audiences and critics alike.

    Patriotic purification Stephen Rose Patriotic purification: cleansing Italian secular vocal music in Thuringia, 1575–1600 Stephen Rose In sixteenth-century Europe, the dominance of Italian culture caused a variety of responses in territories north of the Alps. Lands such as Poland with strong religious or dynastic ties to Italian states were keen to emulate their culture. In other territories such as France, the import of Italian cultural practices prompted patriotic resistance. To understand how cultural goods were transferred and appropriated in the early modern period, it is necessary to study the forces that attracted north Europeans to Italian culture and also the processes whereby Italianisation was resisted. In each place or institution where they were appropriated, Italian cultural practices acquired a different set of meanings. This article aims to expose the complex mixture of attraction, resistance and appropriation involved in the reception of Italian secular song in the central German territory of Thuringia, particularly in schools and churches between 1575 and 1600. In German-speaking lands the appropriation of Italian culture was led by social elites who used it as a mark of their distinction. Aristocrats cultivated Italian art and music to show their cultural prestige. In Saxony, Electors Moritz (ruled 1541–53) and August (ruled 1553–86) remodelled the Dresden court palace in Italian style, adding sgraffito decoration and frescos by the three Tola brothers. From 1549 the Dresden court ensemble included Italian instrumentalists such as Antonio Scandello, Cerbonio Besozzi and Matteo Besozzi, while the three Tola brothers were also active there as singers.1 Munich too became a centre for Italian culture under Albrecht V I would like to thank the music curators at the British Library, particularly Nicolas Bell, for alerting me to their acquisition of the 1576 and 1580 Cantiones suavissimae.
