JENKINS It is the twelfth of November and near the top of Franklin's tree, the size and shape of overgrown pearls, are five unopened buds that surely will be caught by the killing frost, which this year, later than usual, cannot now be long in coming. Since the first of August the tree has been in constant bloom and like the venerable philosopher, whose growing namesake it is, Franklinia Altamaha is giving of its beneficence as did he, with the same generous hand, up to the very end. Few trees or shrubs bloom continuously for three months as does this and still fewer equal it in the beauty of its blossoms. They float in the air like minia- ture pond-lillies, with snow-white petals and a great cluster of golden stamens against the background of its magnolia-like leaves. No tree which ornaments our gardens has a more romantic history. For one hundred and forty years botanists have sought to find it growing in its native habitat by the Georgia river1 which is the descriptive part of its name. Comparative genomics of the so far uncultured cluster-2 Candidatus Frankia datiscae Dg1, with cultivated Frankiae has revealed genome reduction, but no obvious physiological impairments. A direct physiological assay on nodule tissues from Coriaria myrtifolia infected with a closely-related strain permitted the identification of a requirement for alkaline conditions. -

In traditional medicine practice, various parts of Z. limonella are used for the treatment of dental caries, febrifugal, sudorific, rheumatism, diuretic, stomach ache and diarrhea. Secondary metabolites have been isolated the stems, stem barks, and fruits. The plant contains alkaloid, amide, lignin, coumarin and terpenoid compounds. The extracts of the various parts, essential oil from the fruits and some pure compounds of Z. limonella have been found to have biological activities, for example, mosquito repellent and mosquito larvicidal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and antitumour properties. -

PART II PERSONAL PAPERS AND ORGANIZATIONAL RECORDS Allen, Paul Hamilton, 1911-1963 Collection 1 RG 4/1/5/15 Photographs, 1937-1959 (1.0 linear feet) Paul Allen was a botanist and plantsman of the American tropics. He was student assistant to C. W. Dodge, the Garden's mycologist, and collector for the Missouri Botanical Garden expedition to Panama in 1934. As manager of the Garden's tropical research station in Balboa, Panama, from 1936 to 1939, he actively col- lected plants for the Flora of Panama. He was the representative of the Garden in Central America, 1940-43, and was recruited after the War to write treatments for the Flora of Panama. The photos consist of 1125 negatives and contact prints of plant taxa, including habitat photos, herbarium specimens, and close-ups arranged in alphabetical order by genus and species. A handwritten inventory by the donor in the collection file lists each item including 19 rolls of film of plant communities in El Salvador, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. The collection contains 203 color slides of plants in Panama, other parts of Central America, and North Borneo. Also included are black and white snapshots of Panama, 1937-1944, and specimen photos presented to the Garden's herbarium. Allen's field books and other papers that may give further identification are housed at the Hunt Institute of Botanical Documentation. Copies of certain field notebooks and specimen books are in the herbarium curator correspondence of Robert Woodson, (Collection 1, RG 4/1/1/3). Gift, 1983-1990. BOOK REVIEWS Dec. 258 John and William Bartram> Botanists and Explorers y i6gg—iyyjy 1739— 1823 (Pennsylvania Lives series). By Ernest Earnest. (Philadelphia, University of Pennsylvania Press, 1940. vii, 187 p. Portraits.) The second volume of "Pennsylvania Lives" now being published by the University of Pennsylvania Press is devoted to two of our most distinguished Pennsylvania naturalists, John and William Bartram, father and son. Of fine intellectual caliber, they, like others of Quaker faith at that time, were denied expression of their talents in art and music (or dancing), and like others of similar faith in the earlier days of our history they turned to serious reading and to scientific experiment or exploration. The author of the book succeeds immediately, by means of skillfully chosen quotations from letters and publications, interwoven with the results of exten- sive studies, in making the reader intimately acquainted with the strangely similar, yet widely different, personalities of father and son. The reviewer became so interested that he recently seized an opportunity to visit the old Bartram homestead and garden along the west bank of the Schuylkill in south- ern Philadelphia. Here, by his industry and skill, John Bartram had trans- formed swampy land into fertile fields, enlarged his farm to 261 acres, and by his own hands split the slabs of stone and added to the diminutive original Swedish house. The leaders of the American Philosophical Society, among whose founders Benjamin Franklin's name appears first and John BartramJs second, were men who labored and carried on their scientific work with their own hands. -

The present article analyses the plant species belonging to the Cytisus Genus and present in Al. Beldie Herbarium from Marin Drăcea National Institute for Research and Development in Forestry (INCDS), Bucharest. This Herbarium is registered in Index Herbariorum and contains over 40 000 vouchers. Cytisus Genus belongs to the Fabaceae Family which contains over 490 plant species with medicinal properties. The species from this Genus are cultivated both for their ornamental aspect as well as for their bioactive properties. The Genus is present in Europe, Asia, North Africa and South Africa. Among the species present in the Herbarium we mention: Cytisus nigricans L., Cytisus hirsutus L., Cytisus elongatus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus albus., Cytisus albus Hacq., Cytisus austriacus L., Cytisus falcatus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus leucotrichus L., Cytisus leucanthus Waldst. & Kit., Cytisus heuffelii Wierzb. etc. These plants were gathered from all over Romania as well as from abroad by renowned specialists such as Al. Beldie, P. Cretzoiu, G. P. Grințescu, St. Purcelean, At. Haralamb, Al. Borza, C.C. Georgescu, S. Pașcovschi, I. Pop, I. Prodan, A. Richter, Wolff, E. Reverchon and E.I. Nyárády. The data from each voucher include the name of the species, the harvesting year, the harvesting place, the person who has collected them as well as their conservation degree. The plants were gathered over 140 years, from 1850 until 1990. -

Comparative Population Dynamics of Two Closely Related Species Differing in Ploidy Level Lucie Cˇ erna´ 1, Zuzana Mu¨ nzbergova´ 1,2* 1 Department of Botany, Faculty of Science, Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic, 2 Institute of Botany, Academy of Sciences, Pru˚honice, Czech Republic Abstract Background: Many studies compare the population dynamics of single species within multiple habitat types, while much less is known about the differences in population dynamics in closely related species in the same habitat. Additionally, comparisons of the effect of habitat types and species are largely missing. Methodology and Principal Findings: We estimated the importance of the habitat type and species for population dynamics of plants. Specifically, we compared the dynamics of two closely related species, the allotetraploid species Anthericum liliago and the diploid species Anthericum ramosum, occurring in the same habitat type. We also compared the dynamics of A. ramosum in two contrasting habitats. We examined three populations per species and habitat type. The results showed that single life history traits as well as the mean population dynamics of A. liliago and A. ramosum from the same habitat type were more similar than the population dynamics of A. ramosum from the two contrasting habitats. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that when transferring knowledge regarding population dynamics between populations, we need to take habitat conditions into account, as these conditions appear to be more important than the species involved (ploidy level). However, the two species differ significantly in their overall population growth rates, indicating that the ploidy level has an effect on species performance. In contrast to what has been suggested by previous studies, we observed a higher population growth rate in the diploid species. -
