The Council invited Libya to respond positively to this policy, notably with a view to the resolution of remaining EU concerns, in particular the case of the Bulgarian and Palestinian medical workers and other outstanding issues. The Council, addressing the situation in the Middle East , - condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attacks perpetrated in the Sinai against innocent Egyptian and Israeli citizens; - expressed grave concern at the unprecedented cycle of retaliatory violence in Israel and the Occupied Territories, called on both parties to take steps to fulfil their Roadmap obligations and commitments and welcomed the proposals made by the EU Special Representative for an EU coordinating mechanism for donor assistance to the Palestinian Civil Police.

In many EU Member States, the local elections are held simulta- neously with the European elections providing a huge opportunity to link the two election campaigns. Against this background, we would like to provide you with some practical background material and answer your questions on how European decisions in various policy areas influence your municipality by means of this booklet ‘Local Benefi ts of Europe’. This booklet is based on a work that was done by the German Greens lead by Anna Cavazzini and Reinhard Bütikofer. The information can also help you prepare for your local election programmes or campaigns. We place particular emphasis on how the people in your community benefi t practically from Europe, ranging from (Secretary General EGP) environmental protection to structural Mar Garcia policy, and what the Greens in Europe have achieved for European communi- ties. If you need more information on a spe- cifi c topic - no problem: in each chapter, you will fi nd a contact person who has contributed to this handbook and can answer your questions. We hope that this handbook will help you to prepare for the upcoming Euro- pean and local elections. Best regards 1. How do cities and municipalities benefi t from Europe? 5 1.1.

  • European Parliament: 7Th February 2017 Redistribution of Political Balance
POLICY PAPER European issues n°420 European Parliament: 7th February 2017 redistribution of political balance Charles de Marcilly François Frigot At the mid-term of the 8th legislature, the European Parliament, in office since the elections of May 2014, is implementing a traditional “distribution” of posts of responsibility. Article 19 of the internal regulation stipulates that the Chairs of the parliamentary committees, the Deputy-Chairs, as well as the questeurs, hold their mandates for a renewable 2 and a-half year period. Moreover, internal elections within the political groups have supported their Chairs, whilst we note that there has been some slight rebalancing in terms of the coordinators’ posts. Although Italian citizens draw specific attention with the two main candidates in the battle for the top post, we should note other appointments if we are to understand the careful balance between nationalities, political groups and individual experience of the European members of Parliament. A TUMULTUOUS PRESIDENTIAL provide collective impetus to potential hesitations on the part of the Member States. In spite of the victory of the European People’s Party (EPP) in the European elections, it supported Martin As a result the election of the new President of Schulz in July 2104 who stood for a second mandate as Parliament was a lively[1] affair: the EPP candidate – President of the Parliament. In all, with the support of the Antonio Tajani – and S&D Gianni Pittella were running Liberals (ADLE), Martin Schulz won 409 votes following neck and neck in the fourth round of the relative an agreement concluded by the “grand coalition” after majority of the votes cast[2].

  • Brussels, to the Attention of Members of the European Parliament Who
CATHERINE ASHTQN ANDRIS PIEBALGS HIGH REPRESENTATIVE MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION VICE PRESIDENT OF THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION DEVELOPMENT Brussels, A(2013)3540142-3819594 To the attention of Members of the European Parliament who signed the letter of 20 November Dear Colleagues, Thank you for your letter of 20 November addressed to both of us as well as to Commissioners Georgieva and De Gucht concerning land acquisitions in Colombia. Land issues axe obviously one of the key dimensions of the decade-old internal conflict in Colombia and therefore deserve close attention on the part of the EU. This is the reason why the EU has been devoting considerable financial resources to funding projects aimed at helping displaced people, at facilitating their return and reintegration and at supporting people at risk in the framework of the land restitution process. Moreover, the EU is also directly contributing to the implementation of the law on victims and land restitution through a project funded in the framework of the instrument for stability. At political level, the issues related to the implementation of the law are also discussed regularly in the framework of the various dialogue fora between the EU and Colombia, including the EU-Coiombia Dialogue on Human Rights. The EU is also engaged in exchanges with the Colombian authorities about mining and natural resources, which have an obvious relation with land use and occupation issues. The EU is hopeful that the current negotiations between the FARC and the Colombian authorities should, if they are successful, contribute to reducing tensions about land in Colombia. We have also been informed that the Colombian institute for Rural Development (INCODER), in charge of the formalisation of land titles, has launched a number of enquiries into a number of cases of alleged undue accumulation of agricultural family units (IJAF), including in the region to which your correspondence refers.

International Conference, 23-25 April 2006, House of the Teacher, Volodymyrska 57, Kyiv / Ukraine „Chornobyl is a word we would all like to erase from our memory. It [opened] a Pandora's box of invisible enemies and nameless anxieties in people's minds, but which most of us probably now think of as safely relegated to the past. Yet there are two compelling reasons why this tragedy must not be forgotten. First, if we forget Chornobyl, we increase the risk of more such technological and environmental disasters in the future. Second, more than seven million of our fellow human beings do not have the luxury of forgetting. They are still suffering, every day, as a result of what happened 14 years ago. Indeed, the legacy of Chornobyl will be with us, and with our descendants, for generations to come." Kofi Annan, April 2000 On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, the Heinrich Böll Stiftung (Berlin), Ecoclub (Rivne, Ukraine), The Greens/EFA in the European Parliament, the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (Washington, DC), the World Information Service on Energy (Amsterdam), IPPNW (Germany) and Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN (Germany) are inviting independent scientists, environmentalists, non-governmental organizations and sustainable energy experts from all over the world for the international conference „Chornobyl + 20 – Remembrance for the Future“ to take place in Kyiv/Ukraine on April 23-25. The conference will focus on three areas: First, the ongoing catastrophe of Chornobyl and its continuing consequences, including the release of a new study which reviews and analyzes the recently published report of the IAEA and WHO; second, the continuing safety, economic, proliferation and other problems posed by nuclear power generally; and third, the development of a roadmap to a sustainable energy future.
