Effects of Ukrainian Crisis in Transcarpathia: the Hungarian
92/150 ÁGNES ERŐSS KATALIN KOVÁLY PATRIK TÁTRAI Effects of the Ukrainian Crisis in Transcarpathia: the Hungarian Perspective November 2016 www.migracje.uw.edu.pl 1 Ágnes Erőss – Katalin Kovály – Patrik Tátrai Geographical Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences 2 Abstract Ukraine’s turbulent recent history has had serious economic and social effects in its westernmost region, Transcarpathia. The East Ukrainian armed conflict, accompanied by a serious economic downturn, resulted in major modifications in individual and family life strategies determined by emigration and the policies of the neighbouring V4 states. The main focus of the present research was to study how recent political events (Euromaidan, the Russian takeover in Crimea, the Donbas conflict) affected Transcarpathia and its ethnic Hungarian population; furthermore, how patterns of individual and family life and migration strategies have been influenced by Hungary’s kin-state politics. The study is based on analysis of statistical data and policy documents, complemented by semi-structured interviews conducted in spring 2016. We found that the dynamics of emigration from Transcarpathia in the past few years are fuelled by the unrest in Eastern Ukraine (including the military drafts) and Hungary’s kin-state politics, especially the preferential (re)naturalisation simplifying the acquisition of Hungarian citizenship. Individual and family livelihood strategies, migration patterns and cross-border connections are influenced by the regional geopolitics of V4 countries. We argue that the western neighbours of the weakening Ukraine have unobtrusively made attempts to take advantage of the changing geopolitical circumstances in order to increase their influence and attract human resources. Keywords: Transcarpathia, kin-state politics, migration, Hungary, cross-border relations, Ukraine crisis Abstrakt Ostatnie wydarzenia na Ukrainie miały poważne skutki gospodarcze i społeczne także dla najbardziej na zachód wysuniętego regionu kraju - Zakarpacia. -
At War with Russia in East, Ukraine Has Worries in the West, Too - the New York Times
2018. 10. 07. At War With Russia in East, Ukraine Has Worries in the West, Too - The New York Times At War With Russia in East, Ukraine Has Worries in the West, Too By Andrew Higgins Oct. 5, 2018 BEREHOVE, Ukraine — When the Hungarian State Opera visited a town just over the border in western Ukraine last month to perform a patriotic opera, 3,000 people in the audience rose to their feet for the playing of the Ukrainian and then Hungarian national anthems. What followed, however, was a striking display of discordant allegiances. The audience, gathered in the Ukrainian town of Berehove in an outdoor amphitheater, stood mute during the Ukrainian hymn and then burst into boisterous song for the anthem of Hungary, a foreign country. The spectacle explains why, whether along Ukraine’s border with Russia in the east or on its western frontier with the European Union, border-straddling bonds of language and culture make it so difficult for Ukraine to hang together as a single, unified state. It is a clue as well of the skillful exploitation of nationalist impulses by Hungary’s leader, Viktor Orban, to cement his increasingly autocratic rule. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/05/world/europe/ukraine-hungary-ethnic-languages.html 1/10 2018. 10. 07.
