New Plexipave courts at Kowloon Tsai Tennis Center

With a financial grant from the Sir David Trench Fund, we were able to have all eight courts at Kowloon Tsai HKTA Tennis Centre resurfaced with Plexipave IW. Plexipave IW is a slower speed surface compared to traditional courts. The rationale behind this is that the trend for top level hard court tournaments worldwide, including the Australian Open and US Open is to move to a slower surface to enable longer rallies and greater entertainment value, and the HKTA wants

Hong Kong’s No.1 player, Zhang Ling is now on the way back up and overcoming injury problems after having surgery early this year and I am pleased to report she recently won two ITF Women’s Circuit USD15,000 tournaments in Phuket in November. We expect to see Lynn continue to register strong results and improve her ranking to her previous level in 2014.

I am proud to report that Harvard has accepted another one of our junior players, Brian Yeung. This is the second consecutive year in a row Harvard has accepted a player from our Association.

Our Staff

In 2013, we had 13 staff working in Olympic House and 9 staff working in the HKTA Tennis Centre at . On the coaching side we have 11 international qualified full time coaches and a fitness trainer. All of these staff work hard to ensure that the numerous programmes and events organized by the Association are professionally run.

Finally, I want to thank all the hard working and dedicated Council Members and Committee Members who put in many hours of their free time to further the development of tennis in Hong Kong. I also thank all the individual members and the affiliated member clubs of HKTA for their support of the Association throughout the year. I must also give thanks to the Home Affairs Bureau, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the District Boards and many other bodies that HKTA have had dealings with. Their support to Tennis in Hong Kong is much appreciated.

Approx 60 HKTA members, along with Fox Sports promotions winners & guests attended the free event which was open to all members and which featured interactive games, coaching workshops from HKTA coaches and exhibition games from top HK players. Each participant received a Fox Sports tee, F&B coupon and lucky draw ticket.

In addition a Wimbledon Travel Tour package promotion including tournament tickets, hotel and flights was arranged in conjunction with Hong Thai Travel, offering members a discount on the packages and a free gift.

Terms of Reference

To plan and implement tennis related activities such as social, regional and overseas tennis activities for members, and services to HKTA members and member clubs for the enhancement of the HKTA profile and for expansion and increase in value of HKTA memberships ii. In 2013, we had 31 ITF ranked juniors, 4 WTA and 2 ATP ranked players. This remarkable record gives us motivation to work harder, and we are confident of achieving our goal of securing the required results under the Elite Vote System of the HKSI to return tennis to Elite status. We wish all the best to HK tennis.

In 2013, we kept organising tours for players to train and compete overseas and there were some notable results in both local and international events. Based on the Elite Vote points, we had 22 players that were awarded HKSI Individual Athlete Scholarships for 2013-2014. They were Venise Chan, Zhang Ling, Eudice Chong, Jessica Yang, Katherine Ip, Lawrence Lo, Alan Sou, Jackie Tang, Kevin Wong, Jack Wong,

Brian Yeung, Jeff Chan, Jasmine Chan, Jennifer Chan, Ip Wai Lam, Kelvin Lam, Jacqueline Lam, Janet Law, Ronald Pak, Jamie Wong, Venia Yeung and Yu Wing Sze. Hong Kong Team With the re-opening of the tennis courts at HKSI, a new subsidized programme named “Hong Kong Team” was started in September 2013 and run by a professional coaching team. National Programme 30 players were selected to join the programme, they are: 18U: Marco Lam, John Li, Maggie Ng, Eudice Chong, Claire The presence of the Hong Kong Team Programme allows the Spackman, Ng Kwan Yau HKTA National Programme to have more spots available for younger players. Players in this programme are training at least 5 days a week. Players were also subsidised to have extra individual training sessions during Saturday afternoons in order to make some individual technical improvements.

Apart from the junior programme, there is also a full time programme under the team. Therefore, Zhang Ling returned to Hong Kong to train and is now based here as one of the players in this programme. Other players are Andy Lau, Andrew Li, Tommy Lam, Jeff Chan and Ng Kwan Yau. 12U (KT): Gordon Leung, Kyle Tang, Angela Sou, Kobe Zhang Ling Wong, Tiger Cheung, Lam Chun, Law Wing Yin, Mark Cheung On June 14th, the Sports Federation and Olympic 12U (CB): Marvin Lee, Oscar Chan, Chloe Tsang, Wong Hoi Committee of Hong Kong, China and the Shun Hing Man, Kelly Leung, Anthony Wong, Loeffler Bruno, Delloye Group jointly officially announced the 10 awardees of the Melchior, Masuda Sheena, Falloon Gus Panasonic Sports Scholarship Programme 2013-2014 and our very own Zhang Ling was among the recipients. Elite Development

The Elite Development Programme (ED) continued to serve as a platform with clearly defined structures and competitive pathways in order to facilitate a player's progression towards the National Programme and beyond. In 2013, there were more colour balls groups organised at Hong Kong Tennis Centre, Sai Wan Ho, Shek Kip Mei, Yuen Long, Tuen Mun and North District in order to include more younger players in the programme and provide an intensive training for them at an early stage. Junior Team Events

Following the same process as in the previous year, the selection in 2013 was mainly based on Round Robin results Throughout the year, apart from training, camps and tours which aim to ensure that the selection procedure is well were organised during long holidays which aim to develop defined and executed in an open and fair way which sends the best teams to compete in the events.

The Asia/Oceania qualifying for the Junior Davis Cup and Junior Fed Cup was held in Gimcheon, South Korea in April. The boys’ team of Andrew Li, Jack Wong and Alan Sou finished in 6th position. The girls team of NG Kwan Yau, Claire Spackman and Janet Law finished in 7th position.

At the WJT Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying in Kuching, , the Under-14 Boys' Team of Alan Sou, Lam Ching and Alan Lee claimed 6th place, while the girls' team consisting of Claudia Ng, Jacqueline Lam and Nicole Tsang finished in 11th position.

With more than 800 players in the programme, the Junior Tennis Squad was an important channel for the growth of a broad base of tennis-playing youngsters in Hong Kong and serves as a major channel through which talent is identified and promoted to join training at higher levels.

In 2013, the total number of squads was seventy-three and organised at 25 venues, with players having undergone systematic training all over Hong Kong, Kowloon and the . They are supervised by a group of experienced HKTA licensed coaches. At the end of the season, a Squad meet was organised and it consists of a players’ touring and independent skills. In the CSC programme, a total of 35 community tennis clubs are affiliated with the HKTA, the highest number of community clubs amongst all sports in Hong Kong. Meetings were organized between HKTA and LCSD and it implemented an “In and Out” system in order to remove those non-active clubs and start considering new clubs to join. The “Continuous Professional Development Programme” continues to play an important role in developing coaches in Hong Kong. Focusing on academic education and development, the major goal of the Education and Careers Committee (ECC) is to create a context for tennis and academics to go hand-in- hand so our players can excel in both.

The interest in admissions to top US colleges remained high in the past year and will continue so in years to come. Our junior tennis players have proven that their success on court extends to the classroom. The past year saw our top guns Brian Yeung & Kevin Wong, gaining entry to some of the best academic and tennis programs in the US with the likes of top national universities such as Harvard, Michigan, Berkeley, Rice, etc, as well as the most competitive liberal arts colleges, Chairman Mr. Philip MOK such as Claremont and Wesleyan. This year, HKTA had one Official attend an ITF Level 2 Officiating School in Bangkok, Thailand from 27 November to 1 December 2013. Hopefully more Hong Kong officials can reach the International level of officialing.

The Committee continuously runs National Level Schools to recruit new officials. 44 candidates successfully completed the Level 1 Umpires’ Training Course that was held at Victoria Park in June. Terms of Reference

i. The LMC shall be responsible for the promotion, management, and marketing of all League tennis, which is organized or sanctioned by the Hong Kong Tennis Association ii. The LMC shall be appointed annually by the HKTA Council and shall consist of a Chairman, a League Secretary and not less than eight additional members from Affiliated Clubs iii. The LMC shall be responsible for the registration of teams, the grading of individual players, and the publication of a League Handbook containing the Rules for League Competitions and the arrangement of League Divisions iv. The LMC shall have the authority to arbitrate on disputes between clubs and players concerning League matters v. The LMC shall consult Convenors of Affiliated Clubs on at least one occasion each year at a Convenors meeting to consider modifications pertaining to the organization of Leagues or to the Rules for League Competitions
