Figures and/or pictures may be missing from this format of the document. *** Abstract: This essay reinterprets the life of a famous Muscogee Creek leader and examines the relationship between chiefly power and foreign travel in American Indian studies and Atlantic world studies. In spring 1734, the Creek headman Tomochichi and British imperialist James Edward Oglethorpe traveled to London to ratify a treaty that established the British colony of Georgia in the neighborhood of the Creek Confederacy. During his five-month sojourn, Tomochichi forged alliances with the Georgia trustees and the British royal family that resulted in a unique trans- Atlantic network of patronage. Upon return home, he leveraged his ocean-going imperial connections to craft an authoritative chieftainship that dated to the seventeenth-century Mississippian era. Keywords: history | ethnohistory | muscogee creek | chieftains | native american studies | atlantic world studies | Tomochichi Article: At the turn of the twentieth century, anthropologist John Reed Swanton recorded the origins of the Hitchiti Creeks, who spoke the Hitchiti dialect of the Muscogean (mus-KO-gee-an) language family.

Black Thought and the Long Fight for Freedom: From the Antebellum Period to the Black Lives Matter Movement 21:512: 391 Fall 2016 Instructor: Dr. M. Cooper Email: [email protected] Mondays & Wednesdays: 10:00 AM-11:20 AM Room: 348 Conklin Hall Office Hours: Mondays 1:20 PM-2:20 PM; Wednesdays 2:20 PM-3:20 PM, 353 Conklin Hall Course Description This undergraduate seminar examines a diverse group of black intellectuals' formulations of ideologies and theories relative to racial, economic and gender oppression within the context of dominant intellectual trends. The intellectuals featured in the course each contributed to the evolution of black political thought, and posited social criticisms designed to undermine racial and gender oppression, and labor exploitation around the world. This group of black intellectuals' work will be analyzed paying close attention to the way that each intellectual inverts dominant intellectual trends, and/or uses emerging social scientific disciplines, and/or technologies to counter racism, sexism, and classism. This seminar is designed to facilitate an understanding of the black intellectual tradition that has emerged as a result of African American thinkers’ attempts to develop a response to, and understanding of, the black condition. This course explores of a wide range of primary and secondary sources from several different periods, offering students opportunity to explore the lives and works some of the most important black intellectuals. We will also consider the way that period-specific intellectual phenomenon—such as Modernism, Marxism, Pan-Africanism and Feminism— combined with a host of social realities to shape and reshape black thought.

  • T. F. Torrance on the Centenary of His Birth: a Biographical and Theological Synopsis with Some Personal Reminiscences
    T. F. TORRANCE ON THE CENTENARY OF HIS BIRTH: A BIOGRAPHICAL AND THEOLOGICAL SYNOPSIS WITH SOME PERSONAL REMINISCENCES Thomas A. Noble, PhD Professor of Theology, Nazarene Theological Seminary Senior Research Fellow in Theology, Nazarene Theological College, Manchester [email protected] Abstract: Given as a lecture at the meeting of the T. F. Torrance Theological Fellowship on 21st November, 2013, this paper celebrates the centenary of Torrance’s birth. It begins with the world into which he was born and the ethos of the evangelical missionary movement to which his family belonged. Major aspects of his thinking are considered against his biographical background as they became prominent in the development of his theology: the Reformed tradition and his ecumenical endeavours, his profound analysis of the scientic metho of theolog in relation to the natural sciences his focus on the Incarnation and the Atonement, his engagement with the Greek Fathers, and his place in the Trinitarian revival. The review of Torrance’s thought is interspersed with personal reminiscences from several years as Torrance’s student at New College, Edinburgh in the 1970s and from later contact. To return in thought to 1913, the year in which T. F. Torrance was born, is to return to another world. The German Kaiser, the Austrian Kaiser, the Czar of all the Russias, and the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire all still ruled – not to mention his Britannic Majesty, King George V, Emperor of India, presiding over the largest empire the world had ever seen. His Royal Navy dominated the oceans of the world and had been instrumental in abolishing piracy and the slave trade for ever (or so it was thought).
