Monday, November 2, 1987 Men's soccer wins, gains tournament bid

By Paul Edward Parker vv r *. * Daily Campus Staff Yesterday was doubly good for the men's soccer team as Bill Lawrence's goal beat Princeton University 1-0 in the season finale\ and the Huskies got an expected berth in the Big East Conference championship tournament. UConn, 3-0 in conference play, was seeded second and will play third-seed St. John's University Friday at 1 p.m. Top seed Seton Hall University will face fourth- seed at 10 a.m. All games, including Sunday's 12:30

p.m. final, will be played on the UConn soccer field. ^^(BP*/ i - ■»■ '«* * While yesterday's win did not affect UConn's spot in the Big East tournament, it will help the team's chances for the National Collegiate Athictic Association's championship tournament, for which overall record is a factor. UConn is 12-5-3. A 1-0 Dartmouth College win over Yale University Saturday also helps UConn. To qualify for the NCAA tournament, UConn must win the Big East tournament or be selected as one of the teams representing the New England region. A minimum of two teams are taken from each region. Traditionally two arc taken from New England, though three were selected last year. Harvard University, who is undefeated in New England, is all but assured one spot. UConn is 6-1-1 in the region with a loss to Brown University and a tie to Harvard. Yale has several losses in the region, including one to UConn and Saturday's to Dartmouth. Lawrence, a sophomore back, scored yesterday's winning goal with two seconds to play in the first half. Senior midfielder Wayne Churyk chipped the ball into the goal mouth from about 35 yards out and junior forward Dan Donigan went up to challenge Princeton keeper Tom McCabc for the ball. They collided. As McCabe fell, he punched the ball away. Lawrence had crept up near the penalty box. "I realized they couldn't counter [attack], so I just took off for net," Lawrence said. The ball landed at Lawrence's feet, about 20 yards from the goal. ' "I saw the left side [of the goal) was open. I just tried to keep [the a shot] down," he said. The Princeton players and coaches instantly complained, saying Sophomore forward Rich Bayman attempts to keep the ball away from Princeton that Donigan had run into McCabc and taken die keeper out of the back Patrick White during Sunday's game (Chris Nelson photo). play and that Donigan was offsides when Lawrence shot "The referee had two chances to make one correct call," Princeton Coach Joe Morrone had taken Lawrence out of "I figured," Lawrence said, "I just go for broke coach Bob Bradley said, "and he didn't." the starting lineup for yesterday's game and given today.
