  • Mixing INXS in 5.1 Issue 33
Mixing INXS in 5.1 ‘I’m Only Looking’ is a comprehensive package of hits and rare footage that is soon to be released by INXS on DVD. Andy Stewart headed into the studio to hear how Mark Opitz and his ‘Best Seat in the House’ production team pulled together this labour of love. ’ve just come from Studios 301 in Sydney where I’ve been now? What had changed? These were great songs back then sure, listening to some new 5.1 mixes of well-known songs recorded but they had never meant anything to me in the past. In my head Iby one of Australia’s most popular and successful bands, INXS. at least, INXS had always been more of a ‘phenomenon’ than a In my car on the way over I found myself vacillating between group I could ‘relate’ to. the present and the past, wondering what the making of a Greatest It wasn’t the ‘80s fashion palette (which was far more ludicrous Hits DVD collection meant to those involved, but more impor- than I remember it being) that made me feel nostalgic, or the tantly, how any of this work was relevant to fans in 2004. Was this gobsmackingly self-conscious hairdos (which in hindsight should an attempt by the band to reclaim former glory, or was it a labour have seen far more hairdressers jailed), or even the multi-tiered of love motivated by the desire to bring the expansive history of keyboard stands, that made Andrew Farriss look like an aerobics INXS together under one roof, one format? I really had no idea.

Clubs and restaurants closed per executive order by Governeur Ron DeSantis within a few days. The magazine received a lot of cancelations. Restaurants whose ads were done and were willing to bat- tle the storm with less customers completely shut down. We followed their requests not to advertise their closed venues. What was left were 32 pages of articles and few advertisement. The King Center postponed a lot of the concerts in their ad. Please check their website. • Ciaran Gribbin
Ciaran Gribbin Ciaran Gribbin is a Grammy nominated songwriter and performer who, in addition to working with word class artists such as Madonna, U2, Paul McCartney, Snow Patrol and Al Pacino, has toured the world as the singer of INXS. Ciaran was born in war-torn Northern Ireland growing up in ‘The Troubles’. As a young musician he cut his teeth doing gig after gig in the tough bars of Belfast and Derry. During this turbulent time in a divided society, Ciaran witnessed and experienced the bombs and bullets of sectarian abuse and paramilitary attacks. Ciaran’s first big break came in 2010 when he received a Grammy nomination for Madonna’s worldwide hit single ‘Celebration’, which he co-wrote with Madonna and Oakenfold. Since then, in addition to performing at many music festivals including Brazil’s ‘Rock in Rio’, Ciaran has opened shows for Paul McCartney, Crowded House, The Script and Gotye. Ciaran has worked extensively as a songwriter for acts such as Groove Armada and Dead Mau5. He has also worked on multiple movie soundtracks including writing all of the original songs for the U2 supported movie ‘Killing Bono’. This movie was released through Paramount Pictures with a Sony Music soundtrack album. In 2011 Ciaran became the singer of the legendary Australian band INXS. He has toured extensively with INXS throughout South America, Europe and Australasia. 2015 ended with an Oscar shortlist nomination for Ciaran’s song 'Hey Baby Doll' which was sung by Al Pacino in the critically acclaimed movie 'Danny Collins'. “Ciaran has one of the most Ciaran is the founder of Rock and Roll Team Building and extraordinary voices I’ve heard in along with original INXS member, Garry Beers, is a founding member of the super-group ‘Stadium’ who are based in Los a long time.” Angeles.

  • The Roots Report: Please Take a Seat
The Roots Report: Please Take a Seat Okee dokee folks… This is a public service announcement for those who attend concerts. There are these things that theaters have installed and they are called SEATS. They are used to SIT in, relax and enjoy the performances. It seems as though quite a few people have a hard time comprehending how to properly utilize these strange padded devices. When you purchase a concert ticket you are assigned a SEAT. This is not to be used as an area for your interpretive dance number during the show, it is meant to SIT in. I get it, the music moves you, and that is fine and dandy, but common courtesy should come before all else. You are not transparent; you block the view of people behind you. Please do your groovin’ seated. You may not want to give a lap dance to the furniture and your writhing may appear like you have a bad case of hemorrhoids, but standing up in an area meant to sit is just plain RUDE. Folks spend good money on tickets to enjoy a show. If you do feel the need to stand, PLEASE go to the back of the room. I was at a show recently and the guy behind me was standing, as were the folks in front of me. I was sitting because I just wanted to relax and listen to the music. The guy behind me was dancing and holding a beer in one of those flimsy plastic cups. As if that wasn’t a precarious enough situation, his choreography included arm moves that had his beer waving over my head.

  • In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio.

  • Idioms-And-Expressions.Pdf
Idioms and Expressions by David Holmes A method for learning and remembering idioms and expressions I wrote this model as a teaching device during the time I was working in Bangkok, Thai- land, as a legal editor and language consultant, with one of the Big Four Legal and Tax companies, KPMG (during my afternoon job) after teaching at the university. When I had no legal documents to edit and no individual advising to do (which was quite frequently) I would sit at my desk, (like some old character out of a Charles Dickens’ novel) and prepare language materials to be used for helping professionals who had learned English as a second language—for even up to fifteen years in school—but who were still unable to follow a movie in English, understand the World News on TV, or converse in a colloquial style, because they’d never had a chance to hear and learn com- mon, everyday expressions such as, “It’s a done deal!” or “Drop whatever you’re doing.” Because misunderstandings of such idioms and expressions frequently caused miscom- munication between our management teams and foreign clients, I was asked to try to as- sist. I am happy to be able to share the materials that follow, such as they are, in the hope that they may be of some use and benefit to others. The simple teaching device I used was three-fold: 1. Make a note of an idiom/expression 2. Define and explain it in understandable words (including synonyms.) 3. Give at least three sample sentences to illustrate how the expression is used in context.
