Trichilia arenaria sp. nov. is morphologically similar to T. casaretti, T. elegans and T. pallens. An identification key and comparison table for T. arenaria and those three species from Atlantic Forest of Espírito Santo are also presented. Key words: Espírito Santo, Sapindales, Southeastern Brazil. Resumo Uma nova espécie de Trichilia (Meliaceae) do sudeste do Brasil é descrita, ilustrada e comparada com as espécies relacionadas. Trichilia arenaria sp. nov. é morfologicamente similar a T. casaretti, T. elegans e T. pallens. Chave de identificação e tabela comparativa para T. arenaria e essas três espécies da Mata Atlântica do Espírito Santo também são apresentadas. In this sense, this work had the objective of describing the composition and the structure of the tree community of one hectare of Dense Atlantic Rainforest, at an altitude of 800 m. All individuals, including trees, palm trees, arborescent ferns and dead and standing stems, with a diameter at breast height (DBH) of ≥ 4.8 cm were sampled. After the identification of the botanical material, we proceeded to calculate the usual phytosociological parameters, besides the Shannon diversity index (H’) and Pielou equability index (J). A total of 1.791 individuals were sampled, of which 1.729 were alive, belonging to 185 species, 100 genera and 46 families. -

Regions like Ñeembucú are often considered of lower diversity and interest that more forested regions; this results from both actual species richness fi gures and from under-collecting due to perception as uninteresting. We present here a checklist of the vascular plants of Ñeembucú, which includes 676 taxa (including infraspecifi c taxa and collections identifi ed only to genus) in 100 families and 374 genera. Four hundred and thirty nine (439) of these are new records for Ñeembucú and of these, 4 are new published records for Paraguay. -

The objective of this work was to document traditional knowledge regarding the use of medicinal plants by São Tomé community residents that had its physical area affected by the reservoir of a hydroelectric plant in the region of the Araguari river valley, Amapá, Brazil. Data were collected from May to October 2014. Non-probabilistic sampling (n = 15) and participant observation were used to select local experts who understood about the use of medicinal plants. Socio-demographic and ethnobotanical data were collected during semi-structured interviews. There were 45 species distributed in 31 botanical families, with indicative of medic- inal use by local informants. The main parts used of the plants were bark and leaves. Pammenter School of Biological and Conservation Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 4041, South Africa Received 16 June 2005; accepted 1 July 2005 Abstract The seeds of Trichilia emetica, a multi-purpose tropical forest species, displayed typical recalcitrant behaviour, being shed at an average axis water concentration of 2.82 g per g dry matter (g gÀ 1), and losing viability when dehydrated to axis water concentrations below 0.42 and 0.26 g gÀ 1, when dried slowly or rapidly, respectively. The ultrastructure at shedding was indicative of active metabolism, as would be expected of mature recalcitrant seeds which grade into germinative metabolism after shedding. Rapid dehydration enabled the maintenance of ultrastructural integrity to water concentrations as low as 0.3 g gÀ 1, while cells of axes dried slowly to similar water concentrations displayed total subcellular destruction. In the fully hydrated state, the storage lifespan of the seeds was limited to 60 days at 16 -C, after which all the seeds had germinated in storage. Ultrastructural examination, however, indicated that prolonged mild water stress had occurred, which the seeds are suggested to have suffered as germination proceeded in storage. When stored at 6 -C, the seeds showed extensive ultrastructural derangement, which was accompanied by loss of viability after 20 days, presumably as a result of chilling injury, while storage at 25 -C resulted in all seeds germinating in storage in 35–40 days. -
