JEWISH STATISTICS 277 JEWISH STATISTICS The statistics of Jews in the world rest largely upon estimates. In Russia, Austria-Hungary, Germany, and a few other countries, official figures are obtainable. In the main, however, the num- bers given are based upon estimates repeated and added to by one statistical authority after another. For the statistics given below various authorities have been consulted, among them the " Statesman's Year Book" for 1910, the English " Jewish Year Book " for 5670-71, " The Jewish Ency- clopedia," Jildische Statistik, and the Alliance Israelite Uni- verselle reports. THE UNITED STATES ESTIMATES As the census of the United States has, in accordance with the spirit of American institutions, taken no heed of the religious convictions of American citizens, whether native-born or natural- ized, all statements concerning the number of Jews living in this country are based upon estimates. The Jewish population was estimated— In 1818 by Mordecai M. Noah at 3,000 In 1824 by Solomon Etting at 6,000 In 1826 by Isaac C. Harby at 6,000 In 1840 by the American Almanac at 15,000 In 1848 by M. A. Berk at 50,000 In 1880 by Wm. B. Hackenburg at 230,257 In 1888 by Isaac Markens at 400,000 In 1897 by David Sulzberger at 937,800 In 1905 by "The Jewish Encyclopedia" at 1,508,435 In 1907 by " The American Jewish Year Book " at 1,777,185 In 1910 by " The American Je\rish Year Book" at 2,044,762 DISTRIBUTION The following table by States presents two sets of estimates. -

The Historical Significance of the Cambridge Genizah Inventory Project Rebecca J. W. Smathers Libraries, University of Florida [email protected] Abstract The Cambridge Inventory Project, sponsored by the Friedberg Genizah Project and carried out by a number of researchers at the Taylor-Schechter Genizah Research Unit, was the first attempt to provide accurate information regarding the size and classification of the more than 193,000 Genizah manuscript fragments held at Cambridge University Library. Prior to this project, no authoritative list of valid shelf marks was available, nor was it known how many fragments were classified under any one shelf mark. The provision of such data and the creation of a searchable database were essential for the planning and implementation of a future digitization project. This article not only describes the ensuing Inventory Project, it also uses the project‘s findings, together with additional information in previously unseen archives, to provide a new history of how these collections were formed over time. ARIZONA STATE UNIVERSITY Jewish Studies 2020 annual report about the cover In 2019, while taking REL/ JST 315: Hebrew Bible, with lecturer Timothy Langille— who teaches courses on the Hebrew Bible and Jewish history—Alison Sigala crafted a highly elaborate scroll with medieval-like art, which portrays the stories from the first two chapters of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible. According to Dr. Langille, it also relates to one of the units discussed in this class, “book cultures versus scroll cultures.” The work depicts the biblical scene of Ezekiel receiving a vision from G-d, who calls him to become a prophet. In this story, Ezekiel receives a scroll from G-d and then eats it. This study explores various types of secondary education that are categorised under one of two generic terms - Jewish secondary education or secondary education for Jews. The former describes institutions, offered by individual Jews, which provided a blend of religious and/or secular education. The latter focuses on non-Jewish schools which accepted Jews (and some which did not but were, nevertheless, attended by Jews). Whilst this work emphasises London and its environs, other areas of Jewish residence, both major and minor, are also investigated. -
Emergent Liberal Judaism and Lily Montagu's
EMERGENT LIBERAL JUDAISM AND LILY MONTAGU’S PROTO-FEMINIST PROJECT: EXPLORING THE PRECURSIVE AND CONCEPTUAL LINKS WITH SECOND AND THIRD-WAVE JEWISH FEMINIST THEOLOGIES Luke Devine* Abstract: Lily Montagu was the founder of Liberal Judaism in England. Because of Montagu’s groundbreaking proto-feminist efforts women in Liberal Judaism can become rabbis, be called up to read the Torah, they are equal in divorce law, they can study the sacred texts, they can form a minyan, and can assume communal and religious positions of authority over men. Montagu was an author, theologian, and social worker; she was the driving force behind the development of Liberal Judaism. However, this biographical overview does not match up with the extant historiography that has instead preferred to focus on the male leaders of the Liberal movement to the extent that Montagu’s intellectual and theological contribution has been marginalized and even completely ignored. In this paper we will siècle Anglo-Jewry that would otherwise be forgotten; even more, we will see in Montagu’s essays, monographs, and novels some of the English foundations of contemporary Jewish feminist theology. In the process, the biography and memory of Lily Montagu will be restored to its rightful place. Lily Montagu was the founder of Anglo-Liberal Judaism, but the extant scholarship has not been forthcoming in acknowledging the extent of her role in the expansion of the movement. In fact, Montagu’s part in the formation and development of Liberal Judaism into an established denomination, and her contribution to the intellectual, spiritual, and theological underpinnings of the movement, have been marginalized, downplayed, and even ignored, with analyses of her involvement even bordering on the derogatory. -

Introduction On the morning of February 27, 1946, the sixty- ninth day of the proceed- ings, Yiddish- speaking poet and partisan Abraham Sutzkever was called to the witness stand at the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg. Lev Smirnov, deputy prosecutor for the Soviet Union, asked Sutzkever, one of only three Jewish witnesses to testify at the tribunal, to give an account of Jewish life in Vilna (Vilnius) under German occupation, the atrocious living conditions in the ghetto, and the Germans’ persecu- tion and murder of Vilna Jewry.1 Sutzkever had endured the occupation “from the first to nearly the last day,” having been interned in the ghetto there for more than two years. While standing in court— Sutzkever refused to sit, feeling that he “was saying kaddish for the dead”2— he frequently interspersed his testimony with personal reminiscences. Barred from using his native Yiddish, he recalled a first incident, which occurred in the summer of 1941, in short Russian sentences: German soldiers had compelled him, a rabbi, and a boy from his neighborhood to dance naked around a bonfire in front of the Old Synagogue while throwing its Torah scrolls into the flames. Forced to sing Russian songs at gunpoint as the sacred scrolls went up in smoke, the three came close to passing out.3 The fact that Sutzkever chose to mention this brutal and traumatic “act in the circus,”4 as the Germans had called it, in the short amount of time available for his testimony indicates the existen- tial significance he attributed to it. He considered the Nazis’ deliberate destruction of religious and cultural treasures a key element in their policy of annihilation, one that must be acknowledged during the court proceedings. -

His gentle nature and vast schol arship, his courtesy and erudition will be addressed in the printed talks which this booklet contains. I only wish to add a brief word to record the extraordinary grace oflife and learning Shelomo Dov Goitein brought to our community and to express, on behalf of so many here whose lives he touched, the pride and pleasure we felt in his presence and our gratitude for the kindness and friendship he so warmly and generously bestowed. I feel especially privileged by this happenstance because Professor Goitein was, in a way, the first introduction I had to life as it can be and should be at the Institute. When I came to the Institute in I973, I was working on certain works of art that involved some rather recondite texts in Hebrew, a language of which I am quite ignorant. -
