This was mostly an unconditioned change; almost all the words that appear to have es- caped it either no longer had long vowels at the time the change occurred or else entered the language later. However, there was one restriction: /u:/ was not diphthongized when followed immedi- ately by a labial consonant. The original pronunciation of the vowel survives without change in coop, cooper, droop, loop, stoop, troop, and tomb; in room it survives in the speech of some, while others have shortened the vowel to /U/; the vowel has been shortened and unrounded in sup, dove (the bird), shove, crumb, plum, scum, and thumb. This multiple split of long u-vowels is the most signifi- cant IRregularity in the phonological development of English; see the handout on Modern English sound changes for further discussion. -

Is Phonological Consonant Epenthesis Possible? A Series of Artificial Grammar Learning Experiments Rebecca L. Morley Abstract Consonant epenthesis is typically assumed to be part of the basic repertoire of phonological gram- mars. This implies that there exists some set of linguistic data that entails epenthesis as the best analy- sis. However, a series of artificial grammar learning experiments found no evidence that learners ever selected an epenthesis analysis. Instead, phonetic and morphological biases were revealed, along with individual variation in how learners generalized and regularized their input. These results, in combi- nation with previous work, suggest that synchronic consonant epenthesis may only emerge very rarely, from a gradual accumulation of changes over time. It is argued that the theoretical status of epenthesis must be reconsidered in light of these results, and that investigation of the sufficient learning conditions, and the diachronic developments necessary to produce those conditions, are of central importance to synchronic theory generally. 1 Introduction Epenthesis is defined as insertion of a segment that has no correspondent in the relevant lexical, or un- derlying, form. There are various types of epenthesis that can be defined in terms of either the insertion environment, the features of the epenthesized segment, or both. The focus of this paper is on consonant epenthesis and, more specifically, default consonant epenthesis that results in markedness reduction (e.g. Prince and Smolensky (1993/2004)). Consonant -

For example, the fronting of the pre-nasal hand vowel varied by ethnicity, with White speakers participating the most and Chinese and South Asian speakers participating less. In another example, Korean and South Asian speakers of Californian English had a more fronted foot vowel than the White speakers. Overall, the study confirms that CVS is present in almost all young speakers of Californian English, although the degree of participation for any individual speaker is variable on account of several interdependent social factors. 1 Introduction This is a study on the English spoken by Americans of Asian descent living in California. To begin with, the changes in the Indo-European and Proto- Germanic languages are concisely described, and later the changes in Old, Middle, and Modern English are more deeply analyzed until reaching the Present-Day English vowel system. Through this process and comparing studies by different expert authors in the area of linguistics, an attempt will be made to illustrate as clearly as possible what the evolution of the vowels has been and how they have become what they are today. Another main goal of this work is to analyze the changes taking into account the articulatory properties of vowels; that is, to have a general idea of the physiology of the mouth and the movement of its articulators to realize how vowels are formed by humans, which include raising or lowering and advancing or retracting the body of the tongue, rounding or not rounding the lips, and producing the movements with tense or lax gestures. Besides, different kinds of sound change are also provided to clarify how the linguistic environment affects the vowels, that is, their previous and next sounds. -

THE AMERICAN INTRUSIVE L BRYAN GICK University of British Columbia The well-known sandhi phenomenon known as intrusive r has been one of the longest-standing problems in English phonology. Recent work has brought to light a uniquely American contribution to this discussion: the intrusive l (as in draw[l]ing for drawing and bra[l] is for bra is in southern Pennsylvania, compared to draw[r]ing and bra[r] is, respectively, in British Received Pronunciation [RP]). In both instances of intrusion, a historically unattested liquid consonant (r or l) intervenes in the hiatus between a morpheme-final nonhigh vowel and a following vowel, either across or within words. Not surprisingly, this process interacts crucially with the well- known cases of /r/-vocalization (e.g., Kurath and McDavid 1961; Labov 1966; Labov, Yaeger, and Steiner 1972; Fowler 1986) and /l/-vocalization (e.g., Ash 1982a, 1982b), which have been identified as important markers of sociolinguistic stratification in New York City, Philadelphia, and else- where. However, previous discussion of the intrusive l (Gick 1999) has focused primarily on its phonological implications, with almost no attempt to describe its geographic, dialectal, and sociolinguistic context. This study marks such an attempt. In particular, it argues that the intrusive l is an instance of phonological change in progress. Descriptively, the intrusive l parallels the intrusive r in many respects. Intrusive r may be viewed simplistically as the extension by analogy of a historically attested final /r/ to words historically ending in a vowel (gener- ally this applies only to the set of non-glide-final vowels: /@, a, O/). -

Kleene is a programming language that can be used to create many useful and efficient linguistic applications based on finite-state machines (FSMs). These applications include tokenizers, spelling checkers, spelling correc- tors, morphological analyzer/generators and shallow parsers. FSMs are also widely used in speech synthesis and speech recognition. Kleene allows programmers to define, build, manipulate and test finite- state machines using regular expressions and right-linear phrase-structure grammars; and Kleene supports variables, rule-like expressions, user-defined functions and familiar programming-language control syntax. The FSMs can include acceptors and two-projection transducers, either weighted un- der the Tropical Semiring or unweighted. If this makes no sense, the pur- pose of the book is to explain it. Pre-edited Kleene scripts can be run from the command line, and a graphical user interface is provided for interactive learning, programming and testing. Operating Systems Kleene runs on OS X and Linux, requiring Java version 1.5 or higher. Prerequisites This book assumes only superficial familiarity with regular languages, reg- ular relations and finite-state machines. We will focus here on the vowels in stressed syllables, and the rest of this section is about stressed vowels when we do not explicitly mention stress. We may focus on monosyllabic words that are produced as a full utterance to guarantee that we are looking at a stressed syllable. The English diction texts by Madeleine Marshall and Kathryn LaBouff are two of the most acclaimed manuals on singing in this language. Differences in style between the two have separated proponents to be primarily devoted to one or the other. An in- depth study, comparing the precepts of both authors, and applying their principles, has resulted in an understanding of their common ground, as well as the need for the more comprehensive information, included by LaBouff, on singing in the dialect of American Standard, and changes in current Received Pronunciation, for British works, and Mid- Atlantic dialect, for English language works not specifically North American or British. Chapter 1 introduces Marshall and The Singer’s Manual of English Diction, and LaBouff and Singing and Communicating in English. An overview of selected works from Opera America’s resources exemplifies the need for three dialects in standardized English training. -
