  • Folk for Art's Sake: English Folk Music in the Mainstream Milieu
Volume 4 (2009) ISSN 1751-7788 Folk for Art’s Sake: English Folk Music in the Mainstream Milieu Simon Keegan-Phipps University of Sheffield The English folk arts are currently undergoing a considerable resurgence; 1 practices of folk music, dance and drama that explicitly identify themselves as English are the subjects of increasing public interest throughout England. The past five years have seen a manifold increase in the number of professional musical acts that foreground their Englishness; for the first time since the last 'revival period' of the 1950s and 60s, it is easier for folk music agents to secure bookings for these English acts in England than Scottish and Irish (Celtic) bands. Folk festivals in England are experiencing greatly increased popularity, and the profile of the genre has also grown substantially beyond the boundaries of the conventional 'folk scene' contexts: Seth Lakeman received a Mercury Music Awards nomination in 2006 for his album Kitty Jay; Jim Moray supported Will Young’s 2003 UK tour, and his album Sweet England appeared in the Independent’s ‘Cult Classics’ series in 2007; in 2003, the morris side Dogrose Morris appeared on the popular television music show Later with Jools Holland, accompanied by the high-profile fiddler, Eliza Carthy;1 and all-star festival-headliners Bellowhead appeared on the same show in 2006.2 However, the expansion in the profile and presence of English folk music has 2 not been confined to the realms of vernacular, popular culture: On 20 July 2008, BBC Radio 3 hosted the BBC Proms

In College Green ii. Song for Amanda iii. Minuet iv. Largo (The tender lover) v. Rigaudon Arthur Duff showed early promise as a musician. He was a chorister at Dublin’s Christ Church Cathedral and studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, taking his degree in music at Trinity College, Dublin. He was later awarded a doctorate in music in 1942. Duff had initially intended to enter the Church of Ireland as a priest, but abandoned his studies in favour of a career in music, studying composition for a time with Hamilton Harty. He was organist and choirmaster at Christ Church, Bray, for a short time before becoming a bandmaster in the Army School of Music and conductor of the Army No. 2 band based in Cork. He left the army in 1931, at the same time that his short-lived marriage broke down, and became Music Director at the Abbey Theatre, writing music for plays such as W.B. Yeats’s The King of the Great Clock Tower and Resurrection, and Denis Johnston’s A Bride for the Unicorn. The Abbey connection also led to the composition of one of Duff’s characteristic works, the Drinking Horn Suite (1953 but drawing on music he had composed twenty years earlier as a ballet score).

  • Representation Through Music in a Non-Parliamentary Nation
MEDIANZ ! VOL 15, NO 1 ! 2015 DOI: 10.11157/medianz-vol15iss1id8 - ARTICLE - Re-Establishing Britishness / Englishness: Representation Through Music in a non-Parliamentary Nation Robert Burns Abstract The absence of a contemporary English identity distinct from right wing political elements has reinforced negative and apathetic perceptions of English folk culture and tradition among populist media. Negative perceptions such as these have to some extent been countered by the emergence of a post–progressive rock–orientated English folk–protest style that has enabled new folk music fusions to establish themselves in a populist performance medium that attracts a new folk audience. In this way, English politicised folk music has facilitated an English cultural identity that is distinct from negative social and political connotations. A significant contemporary national identity for British folk music in general therefore can be found in contemporary English folk as it is presented in a homogenous mix of popular and world music styles, despite a struggle both for and against European identity as the United Kingdom debates ‘Brexit’, the current term for its possible departure from the EU. My mother was half English and I'm half English too I'm a great big bundle of culture tied up in the red, white and blue (Billy Bragg and the Blokes 2002). When the singer and songwriter, Billy Bragg wrote the above song, England, Half English, a friend asked him whether he was being ironic. He replied ‘Do you know what, I’m not’, a statement which shocked his friends. Bragg is a social commentator, political activist and staunch socialist who is proudly English and an outspoken anti–racist, which his opponents may see as arguably diametrically opposed combination.

Yet her equally wide influence on the world of music was largely unrecognized until 1992, when the late Carlton Lowenberg published his groundbreaking study Musicians Wrestle Everywhere: Emily Dickinson and Music (Fallen Leaf Press), an examination of Dickinson's involvement in the music of her time, and a "detailed inventory" of 1,615 musical settings of her poems. The result is a survey of an important segment of twentieth-century music. In the years since Lowenberg's inventory appeared, the number of Dickinson settings is estimated to have more than doubled, and a large number of them have been performed and recorded. One critic has described Dickinson as "the darling of modern composers."1 The intriguing question of why this should be so has been answered in many ways by composers and others.

  • Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers
Rellstab, D. & N. Siponkoski (toim.) 2015. Rajojen dynamiikkaa, Gränsernas dynamik, Borders under Negotiation, Grenzen und ihre Dynamik. VAKKI-symposiumi XXXV 12.–13.2.2015. VAKKI Publications 4. Vaasa, (25–34). Nostalgia in the Media Representations of Female Folk Singers Noora Karjalainen English Studies University of Vaasa Tämä artikkeli tarkastelee naisfolklaulajien nostalgisia mediarepresentaatioita. Artikkelissa kiinnitetään erityistä huomiota siihen, kuinka laulajien esityskieli vaikuttaa heidän representaatioidensa muodostumi- seen. Artikkelin teoreettisena pohjana on käytetty Astrid Erllin kulttuurisen muistin tutkimusta ja mää- ritelmiä ja Svetlana Boymin nostalgia-analyysiä. Analysoimalla laulajien kuvauksia eri tekstilähteissä artikkelissa pyritään selvittämään mitä yhteyksiä folklaulajien representaatioilla on nostalgiaan ja kult- tuurisen muistin eri tasoihin. Keywords: cultural memory, folk music, folk singers, media representations, nostalgia 1 Introduction Nostalgia has a central part in the construction of a folk singer representation, as well as with the imagery connected to folk singers. The artist types for different genres of music are constructed through and preserved on the collective level of cultural memory; in folk music these types are particularly persistent, even though the artists may not ac- tively perform the stereotypical folk singer image. Thus, because of collective memory, if an artist is referred to as a folk singer it might bring to mind a long haired young woman, often alone on the stage playing the guitar and singing sad songs about lost love and heartbreak. This representation, constructed mostly during the 1960s folk revival by and for Joan Baez, Judy Collins and others, is still the prevalent public representation reserved for female folk singers. This article discusses nostalgic representations of female folk singers in different media sources such as digital publications of magazine articles, interviews, and concert and album reviews.

  • Martin Cloonan: Trying to Have an Impact
58 International Journal of Music Business Research, October 2020, vol. 9 no. 2 Trying to have an impact: Some confessions of a live music researcher Martin Cloonan1 Abstract This article offers the author's reflections on over fifteen years of researching the live music industry in the UK. It raises issues such as the role of academics, how to have impact and the meaning of value. Overall it suggests that impact can be found in various ways and that it needs to be built via establishing long term relationships while remaining impartial, to be collective and to involve some opportunism. Keywords: Live music, music industries, music policy, impact 1 Introduction This article offers some reflections on the policy and other implications of researching live music. It draws upon six research projects: Mapping the Music Industry in Scotland (2002-3), the History of Live Music in the UK (2008-11), Live Music Exchange (2012-), two projects on Cultural Value (2013 and 2014) and the UK Live Music Census (2016-2018). Each is summarised and lessons drawn before a concluding section draws the findings together. Before continuing it is necessary to note that the paper deals with live music, something which can be characterised in economic terms as an experiential good. What is essentially being sold is something which the audience can imagine in its heads beforehand, experience at the event and then remember afterwards (Cloonan 2012).
