Modern trends of nutrition, especially in developing countries, are characterized by an increasing dependence on imported cereals, fats, and sugar. To investigate the potential of forest gardens and their benefits in terms of food diversification for inhabitants of globalization-affected rural communities, a survey was conducted in Londres de Quepos, a rural village near the Central Pacific coast of Costa Rica. The study comprises of a qualitative content analysis combining a literature review as well as interviews with community members as a basis for identifying efficient management tools to promote the application of forest gardens. Literature research was conducted about dietary habit changes as a result of globalization, current food consumption, cultivation and existing policies for diets diversification. Interviews were conducted in July 2013 with 50 households, containing questions about garden structure and cultivated plants, agricultural practices, consumption behavior and knowledge about medicinal plants and food-related illnesses. Results showed that fruit consumption was generally low and agricultural practices were rarely applied in the form of community gardens. It was found that education about food-related illnesses, sustainable farming practices and medicinal plants was fairly low. Further, a noticeably iv high share of income was spent on food that was mainly purchased in local supermarkets. Consumption generally consisted of high amounts of processed food, with minimal amounts of raw fruits and vegetables. Based on the results of the literature review and community interviews, management strategies are proposed, including communal events, school workshops and eco-tourism opportunities in order to facilitate sustainable lifestyles and a healthy nutrition through the Analog Forestry method. v ACKNOWLEDGMENT I would like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to the secretariat of the International Analog Forestry Network (IAFN) for providing support and company throughout my stay in Costa Rica. The tested non-typical fruits included mirabelle plum, sea buckthorn and blue-berried honeysuckle. Beetroot juice whose pH is about 6.0 served as a model food product. Potentiometric titration was used to compare the efficacy of tested juices as acidity regulators with that of citric þ acid, a widely applied acidity regulator. The antioxidant activity of tested mixtures of juices was determined by spectrophotometric ABTS (2,2-azinobis- (ethyl-2,3-dihydrobenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) diammonium salt) test and their cytotoxic activity was assessed by MTT (thiazolyl blue tetrazolium bromide) test. The potentiometric titration revealed that the efficacy of the juices proposed as acidity regulators matched that of citric acid. Among the mixtures of beetroot juice and titrants studied, the addition of blue-berried honeysuckle juice ensured the highest antioxidant activity, followed by sea buckthorn and mirabelle plum juices.

    Analog Forestry as a Conservation and Development Approach: Lessons Learned from the International Analogue Forestry Network Christopher M. Jones University of California, Davis IAD 200N, Fall 2001 ABSTRACT The persistent alarming rate of tropical deforestation has lead governments, NGOs and academics to rethink approaches that seek to protect and revitalize the planet's dwindling forest resources. Whereas previous conservation efforts have been top- down, focusing on protecting lands from human intrusion, recent initiatives recognize the importance of integrating, and even catering to, the needs of surrounding local populations that may otherwise provoke forest degradation. There has been, in effect, a shifting paradigm away from a focus on preservation, which is seen as both impractical and potentially detrimental to local economies, towards integrated conservation and development projects that address both socio-economic and environmental concerns. This paper will focus on one such approach, the innovative natural restoration system called Analog (or Analogue) Forestry designed by Dr. Ranil Senanayake, founder of the International Analogue Forestry Network. Analog Forestry seeks to restore degraded forest lands, often replacing inefficient slash and burn agriculture or cattle ranching, with highly productive and biologically diverse regenerated forests capable of meeting the extractive needs of local populations (e.g. firewood, fodder, fruits, nuts, subsistence crops, timber) while supplying them with a supplemental income and an ecologically stable environment. With hundreds of successful demonstration sites around the world, this approach offers a promising solution to recuperate lost biodiversity while addressing human development needs. However, successful implementation requires extensive planning, management, and a high level of commitment by landholders and may not be appropriate where these assets are not available.
