All rights reserved. vii Many Thanks to Many People The Symphony Orchestra Institute was activated in the fall of 1995 as a catalyst for organizational change within the community of North American symphony orchestra organizations. The Institute was a new resident moving into a long- established and tightly bounded community; we were greeted with caution. As we pursued our mission and initiated early programs, we needed to build the trust of many constituencies. After three years, we believe that trust has been established, and that a groundswell of interest and enthusiasm is building in the direction of change which the Institute has fostered. The momentum of this wave arises from the breadth of involvement of many people who have helped undergird the Institute during the past three years. This is a note of thanks to all those people. The Institute’s acceptance by the leadership of other industry institutions was vital. Special personal thanks go to Brad Buckley (Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra), former chair of the International Conference of Symphony and Opera Musicians (ICSOM), his successor Robert Levine (Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra), and their colleagues on the ICSOM governing board, for the early recognition of the Institute, its independence, and its unbiased interest in better- functioning symphony organizations. -

Vail Daily column Musically Speaking on New York Philharmonic’s Thirteenth Residency at Bravo! Vail by Sandra Pearson, Assistant Principal Librarian, New York Philharmonic An orchestra's season has a certain flow to it. When we finish our winter season, the shirt sleeves get shorter, and our summer festival wardroBe is donned. Our thoughts also turn towards a change of scenery that takes us from the concrete confines of New York to the pine-scented fresh mountain air of Colorado. Along with the other orchestras who get to enjoy a summer season such as Blossom or Tanglewood, we too get to enjoy our summer residency hiking and making music in the Beautiful surroundings of the Rocky Mountains. We are happy to once again Be sharing music By some our greatest composers with our enthusiastic audiences in the Vail Valley. We enjoy our collaBoration with the amicaBle and witty Bramwell Tovey, and judging from past audience reactions, so do our fans in Vail. The first program on July 24th showcases the pianist Jon Kimura Parker playing Edvard Grieg's classic Piano Concerto in A minor. This concert will also showcase the suBliminal overture to Fingal's Cave By Felix Mendelssohn and Edward Elgar's Enigma Variations. Maestro Tovey's second program on July 26th features Bravo! Vail's artistic director and talented pianist Anne-Marie McDermott playing Rachmaninoff's romantic Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. Balancing out the rest of the program are Le Corsair Overture By Berlioz, The Emperor Waltzes by Johann Strauss, Jr., and the prismatic Suite from Der Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss. -

Superb Sibelius Friday, May 12 10:30am Join the BPO in welcoming back guest conductor Christopher Wilkins and presenting the Buffalo debut of British pianist Mark Bebbington! Sibelius’ grand Symphony No. 2 forms the centerpiece of this program, as British pianist Mark Bebbington brings the work of often-overlooked English composer John Ireland to Kleinhans. Allegro moderato Overture to Der Freischütz: Carl Maria von Weber (1786-1826) Composed in 1820, 10 Minute Duration Weber’s opera Der Freischütz tells the age-old tale of making a deal with the devil in return for favors. In this situation, the protagonists make a deal with a Black Huntsmen in return for seven magic bullets that will always hit their mark. The catch is that bullet No. 7 will be guided by the Black Huntsmen himself. The Overture appropriately establishes all of the main themes of the opera from the ominous sketches and horn music meant to represent the Black Huntsmen to the soaring string and wind melody which represents the hero’s future bride. Piano Concerto in E-Flat Major: John Nicholson Ireland (1879-1962) Composed in 1930, 23 Minute Duration John Ireland’s Piano Concerto features a perfect blend of Romantic timbre and 20th century harmonies. The first movement expresses fragmentation of melodies with string as well as piano solos while the second movement pays lyrical homage to Chopin and Brahms with solo and orchestra interplay. -

Johnson (212) 875-5700; [email protected] BARBARA HAWS NAMED ARCHIVIST AND HISTORIAN EMERITUS AT THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC Haws To Retire from the Philharmonic After 34-Year Tenure To Pursue Doctoral Degree from University of Oxford, Researching Philharmonic Founder Ureli Corelli Hill The New York Philharmonic has named Barbara Haws Archivist and Historian Emeritus for her leadership role in the creation, curation, and expansion of the Philharmonic’s extensive Archives for almost 34 years. She will retire from the Philharmonic in August 2018 and pursue a doctorate in musicology when she matriculates at New College, University of Oxford, in October. Over the course of three-and-a-half decades as Philharmonic Archivist / Historian, Ms. Haws amassed and added to the Philharmonic Archives through research and acquisition. She also made the remarkable American cultural resource accessible for free throughout the world by launching and developing the New York Philharmonic Leon Levy Digital Archives. “Barbara has been an indispensable colleague in the more than 25 years we’ve known each other,” said Deborah Borda, New York Philharmonic President and CEO. “Her pioneering work in the Archives has produced an invaluable resource for the world, one that allows us to clearly see how the New York Philharmonic’s history is the history of our city, our country, and classical music in America. Canadian-born flutist Jeffrey Khaner has been principal flute of The Philadelphia Orchestra since 1990. From 1982 to 1990 he was principal flute of the Cleveland Orchestra, and he has also served as principal of the New York Mostly Mozart Festival and the Atlantic Symphony in Halifax, and as co-principal of the Pittsburgh Symphony. A noted soloist, Mr. Khaner has performed concertos with orchestras throughout the United States, Canada, and Asia, collaborating with conductors including Matthias Bamert, Riccardo Chailly, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Christoph Eschenbach, Claus Peter Flor, Hans Werner Henze, Vladimir Jurowski, Erich Leinsdorf, Kurt Masur, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, Yutaka Sado, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Gerard Schwarz, José Serebrier, Robert Spano, Franz Welser- Möst, and David Zinman. Mr. Khaner’s concerto repertoire is extensive and he has premiered many works including the concertos by Ned Rorem, Behzad Ranjbaran, Jonathan Leshnoff, Eric Sessler, Daron Hagen and David Chesky, all written for him. As a recitalist, Mr. Khaner has appeared on four continents with pianists Charles Abramovic, Christoph Eschenbach, Lowell Liebermann, Wolfgang Sawallisch, Hugh Sung, and many others. He regularly incorporates into the programs the music of today’s composers, many of whom have written expressly for him. Mr. Khaner is a founding member of the Syrinx Trio (with former Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Viola Roberto Díaz and Philadelphia Orchestra Principal Harp Elizabeth Hainen), which made its Carnegie Hall debut in 2001 at Weill Recital Hall. A graduate of the Juilliard School, Mr. Khaner was named to the faculty as flute professor in 2004, holding the position formerly held by his mentor, the late Julius Baker.
