The orchestra has performed at such significant settings as the Franklin Park Zoo, the Charlestown Navy Yard, and Fenway Park. Since 2007, the Landmarks Orchestra has made the DCR’s Hatch Shell on Boston’s Esplanade its principal home. Currently the orchestra performs in neighborhoods throughout the Boston area and at the Hatch Shell every Wednesday night between mid-July and Labor Day. The Landmarks Orchestra’s mission is to create important and moving experiences for diverse communities throughout metropolitan Boston. The orchestra is recognized as a national leader in eliminating barriers to access, including those of cost, location, disability, and racial and cultural divides. CHRISTOPHER WILKINS was appointed Music Director of the Boston Landmarks Orchestra in the spring of 2011. Since then the orchestra has reaffirmed founder Charles Ansbacher’s vision of community oriented music making with an emphasis on access and inclusion. Mr. Wilkins has initiated collaborations with the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts in the South End, the Conservatory Lab Charter School, and Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, among others. He also serves as Music Director of the Orlando Philharmonic and the Akron Symphony. As a guest conductor, Mr. Wilkins has appeared with many of the leading orchestras of the United States, including those of Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh, and San Francisco. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Harvard College and a masters from the Yale School of Music. Born in Boston, he performed as an oboist with many area ensembles including the Boston Philharmonic under conductor Benjamin Zander. Established in 1982, the LONGWOOD SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA is a distinctive organization in Boston’s cultural landscape recognized for its musical quality, innovative programming, and unique business model of community engagement. Positioned at the crossroads of the arts and the sciences, the orchestra’s membership is composed mainly of health-care professionals, including doctors, medical students, research scientists, nurses, and other caregivers. The LSO’s 2013-2014 season begins October 5 at NEC’s Jordan Hall with Music Director Ronald Feldman conducting works by Sibelius and Brahms. Visit www.longwoodsymphony.org for more information. Two-time winner of the League of American Orchestras’ ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music, RONALD FELDMAN has achieved critical acclaim for his work as a conductor and cellist. Feldman joined the Boston Symphony as a cellist at the age of 19 and played with the orchestra until 2001. After successful appearances as guest conductor for three consecutive seasons at Symphony Hall and Tanglewood, Feldman assumed the post of Assistant Conductor of the Boston Pops Orchestra. He served as assistant to Boston Pops Principal Conductor and composer John Williams from 1989 to 1993. Feldman has appeared as a guest conductor with major orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Boston Pops Orchestra, the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Louis Symphony, and the Quebec Symphony, as well as many regional orchestras, including the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra and the symphony orchestras of Springfield (MA), Albany, and Amarillo. In 2001, Feldman left the Boston Symphony Orchestra to pursue other musical interests. He has served as Music Director of the New England Philharmonic and the Worcester Orchestra. Feldman joined the Longwood Symphony Orchestra as Music Director in July 2012 and also serves as Music Director of the Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, a regional orchestra in residence at Williams College. In addition to serving on the faculties of the New England Conservatory of Music and the Berklee College of Music, Feldman is Artist in Residence, Lecturer in Music, and Chamber Music Coordinator as a faculty member of Williams College.
