    A Place of Comfort: Saying Kaddish in the Morning Minyan by Rabbi Dayle Friedman I have just finished saying Kaddish for two dear ones in the past year and a half. First, I said Kaddish for 11 months or my Dad, Don Friedman, z’l, who died in August, 2013. It was not a given that I would end up saying Kaddish at daily minyan for my father. His connection to Judaism was vestigial and gastronomic. He would have been bemused by my taking on this practice. But, on reflection, this was the right way for me to mourn, both for my own sake, and for the sake of ha’alat haneshamah, elevating my Dad’s soul. More recently, I have just completed sheloshim, thirty days of saying Kaddish for my beloved sister, Jill Friedman Fixler, who died all too soon of cancer at 61. I have had the blessings of saying Kaddish in the morning minyan in our home shul, GJC, and in Congregation Adath Israel in Merion Station, in addition to at least 8 other congregations I’ve encountered on my travels. When I first started saying Kaddish, I was stopped by the very first words: Yitgadal v’yitkadash shemei rabba B’alma divra chirutei Let God’s great name be magnified and sanctified In this world created according to God’s will. How could that be so? Did God will a world of loss? A world of ashen taste and sight? A world of primal order disturbed? Over time, I came to notice words that follow soon after those: Vi-yamlich malchutei b’chayeichon uviyomeichon God’s reign is made manifest through our lives, through our days.

We were looking at each other over computer screens but by the camera going from fuzzy to focused there was some small measure of redemption. Ironically, I felt a deeper connectivity than I expected despite the physical distancing. Here we were “in” each other’s apartments seeing the messy bookshelves, the family photos on the wall and the art behind us. “What kind of coffee are you drinking?” he asked. I was holding my favorite green mug in plain sight. “Tanzanian or Costa Rican...it’s one of those Fairway roasts.” As I raised my mug towards my lips I pronounced the blessing, the sacred affirmation that affirms I would dare not steal from the bounty of the world without thanking the Master of Creation. And how I love that wonderful ingredient - coffee! “Barukh Atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melekh HaOlam ShehaKol N’hiyeh B’dvaro .” [Blessed is God, Ruler of the Universe, through whose word the world came to be.] I drew the cup nearer in order to go from blessing to action. For most of the past century, when the primary organization of American Jewish life was the synagogue, the distinction was academic. Over the last decade, however, there has been a small explosion of independent minyanim, lay-led communities for worship. Often meeting in church basements and synagogue social halls, these minyanim are disproportionately composed ofyoung Jewish leaders and professionals - precisely the people the institutional community has tried and failed to reach with huge initiatives and costly programs. They are independent, communally governed, and non­ denominational - and they may be quietly changing the shape ofAmerican Judaism. A man’s role is focused on positive time-bound mitzvot (commandments), which include but are not limited to, daily praying, wrapping tefillin and putting on a tallit; whereas a women’s role and mitzvot are not time bound and include lighting Shabbat candles, separating a piece of challah for G-d on Shabbat, and the laws of Niddah (menstruation purity). 1 Orthodox Judaism views the separate roles of men and women as a valued and crucial aspect of Jewish life and law, whereas Jewish feminism and more reform branches of Judaism believe these distinctions between men and women are representative of sexual discrimination and unequal opportunity in Judaism. The creation of the Reform and Conservative movement in the late 1800s paved the way for the rise of the Jewish feminist movement in the 1970s, which re-evaluated the classical Jewish texts and halakha (Jewish law) in relation to the role of women in Judaism. Due to Judaism’s ability to evolve and change throughout time, women associated with different Jewish denominations have been able to create their own place within Judaism while also maintaining the traditional aspects of Judaism in order to find a place which connects them most to their religiosity and femininity as modern Jewish women. During the shiva, we remain at home and allow others to care for us. In the age of Covid-19, the community relies on telephone calls, Facetime, Skype, etc to fulfill the mitzvah ofnichum aveilim, providing comfort for those who are bereaved. In person visitation is not permissible. In the absence of a minyan, one is encouraged to recite one or both of the texts attached in the morning, afternoon, and evening – corresponding with Shacharit, Minchah, and Ma’ariv. For the time following shiva, we recognize that the Kaddish is a stand-in for a larger way of live – specifically the study of Torah and the fulfillment of mitzvot. Many believe that performing a mitzvah that was important to your loved one is even more praiseworthy than reciting the Kaddish. So too is the study of Torah done in their merit. If the recitation of Kaddish with a minyan is not possible, please consider doing a mitzvah that would have been meaningful to your loved one. At this precarious moment, checking in on isolated friends and relatives or donating money to support the many individuals who suddenly find themselves without an income are especially timely mitzvot. For study, you may consider reading the weekly Torah portion either in a chumash or online. Pirkei Avot (Ethics of our Fathers) is a wonderful and accessible ancient collection of wisdom that you should consider studying as well.

The Committee on Jewish Law and Standards permitted women to count in the minyan, and, by extension, to serve as ruchm ,ujhka, in 1973. However, the issue has continued to engender debate and halakhic positions have continued to crystallize since then as the Conservative movement has become more and more egalitarian in its profile. A brief overview of the various stages and positions in the halakhic discussion of women and minyan within the Conservative movement is necessary before an evaluation and new position can be proposed.

Independent minyanim are grassroots communities that are marked by vibrant prayer services with traditional liturgy, all­volunteer leadership, gender­egalitarian values (although 25 percent have a mechitzah, a physical division between men and women), and no denominational affiliation. In the last 10 years, the number of minyanim in the United States and Canada has grown exponentially. In 2000 there were three, and in 2009 there were more than 70. They serve 20,000 Jews, most of them under 40 years old. Professor Jonathan Sarna of Brandeis University has called these minyanim “the most exciting development in American Judaism in the last 30 years.” One fascinating aspect of independent minyanim is the broad slice of American Jewish life they represent. Less than half of the attendees grew up in a Conservative synagogue, and a large minority come from Orthodox and Reform backgrounds. Significantly, most independent minyan goers now claim no denominational identity. Are independent minyanim in conflict with traditional synagogues? Indeed, some people have argued that minyanim represent a threat to synagogues, purportedly siphoning off their members. After all, the theory goes, if young Jews are praying in minyanim, their participation must be coming at the expense of synagogue engagement. In fact, most young Jews who attend minyanim are otherwise disengaged from traditional institutional Jewish life. In other words, they aren’t choosing between minyanim and synagogues. They are choosing between minyanim and nothing.
