Minyanim that meet late afternoon often change schedules as the days lengthen. Fast days pose a special problem.     1 The Difference between Blessing (bracha) and Prayer (tefilah) What is a Bracha? On the most basic level, a bracha is a means of recognizing the good that God has given to us. As the Talmud2 states, the entire world belongs to God, who created everything, and partaking in His creation without consent would be tantamount to stealing. When we acknowledge that our food comes from God – i.e. we say a bracha – God grants us permission to partake in the world's pleasures. This fulfills the purpose of existence: To recognize God and come close to Him. Once we have been satiated, we again bless God, expressing our appreciation for what He has given us.3 So, first and foremost, a bracha is a "please" and a "thank you" to the Creator for the sustenance and pleasure He has bestowed upon us. The Midrash4 relates that Abraham's tent was pitched in the middle of an intercity highway, and open on all four sides so that any traveler was welcome to a royal feast. Inevitably, at the end of the meal, the grateful guests would want to thank Abraham. "It's not me who you should be thanking," Abraham replied. "God provides our food and sustains us moment by moment. To Him we should give thanks!" Those who balked at the idea of thanking God were offered an alternative: Pay full price for the meal. Considering the high price for a fabulous meal in the desert, Abraham succeeded in inspiring even the skeptics to "give God a try." Source of All Blessing Yet the essence of a bracha goes beyond mere manners.

    Redefining a Minyan for the Sake of Service to God

    It Is Time to Act for the Lord: Redefining a Minyan for the Sake of Service to God Dear CSZ Family, As of Shabbat on Friday night, May 8, 2020 corresponding to 15 Iyar 5780, Congregation Shaarey Zedek will affirm a minimum of ten Jewish adults who can be seen and heard, either virtually or in-person, as a minyan -- the gathering that ​ ​ ​ ​ constitutes a quorum for public prayer. This decision comes in response to the global pandemic affecting every aspect of our society, and it supersedes previous teshuvot that I have issued regarding our ​ ​ community prayer services. While an in-person communal gathering of prayer is superior to a virtual one, this teshuvah is written with the goal of allowing members of ​ ​ Congregation Shaarey Zedek to more fully feel God’s presence as well as the fellowship of community and, perhaps more importantly, to further strive to serve God with joy and with a sacred sense of purpose (i.e., commandedness). Additionally, this teshuvah is in keeping with Congregation Shaarey Zedek’s efforts ​ ​ toward inclusion by ensuring that those who are unable to attend the synagogue because of health complications or health vulnerabilities are equal to those who are able to attend the synagogue in-person.     3.0 LAND USE AND ZONING Zoning The city is divided into three basic zoning districts: residential (R), commercial (C), and manufacturing (M). The three basic categories are further subdivided into lower, medium, and higher density residential, commercial and manufacturing districts. Development within these districts is regulated by use, building size, and parking regulations. Here is a brief description of the three basic zoning districts according to the Zoning Handbook: Residential District (R) In New York City, there are ten standard residential districts, R1 through R10. The numbers refer to the permitted density (R1 having the lowest density and R10 the highest) and other controls such as required parking. A second letter or number signifies additional controls are required in certain districts. R1 and R2 districts allow only detached single-family residences and certain community facilities. The R3-2 through R10 districts accept all types of dwelling units and community facilities and are distinguished by differing bulk and density, height and setback, parking, and lot coverage or open space requirements. Commercial District (C) The commercial districts reflect the full range of commercial activity in the city from local retail and service establishmentsDRAFT to high density, shopping, entertainment and office uses. There are eight basic commercial districts where two (C1 and C2 districts) are designed to serve local needs, one district (C4) is for shopping centers outside the central business district, two (C5 and C6 districts) are for the central business districts which embrace the office, retail, and commercial functions that serve the city and region, and three (C3, C7, and C8 districts) are designed for special purposes (waterfront activity, large commercial amusement parks and heavy repair services).
