Large grazing herbivores drive the ecology of the site and can have a profound impact on invertebrates, both positive and negative. This survey was commissioned in order to assess the site’s invertebrate assemblage in a standardised and repeatable way both internally between fields and sections and temporally between years. Eight fields were selected across the estate with two in the north, two in the central block -

Norwegian Journal of Entomology 66, 19–31. The bark and ambrosia beetle collection at the University Museum in Bergen has been curated and digitized, and is available in public databases. Several species were recorded from Western Norway for the first or second time. The pine inhabiting species Hylastes opacus Erichson, 1836 is reported from Western Norway for the first time, and the rare speciesPityogenes trepanatus (Nordlinger, 1848) for the second time. The spruce inhabiting species Pityogenes chalcographus (Linnaeus, 1761) and Cryphalus asperatus (Gyllenhal, 1813), which are common in eastern Norway, were recorded in several Western Norway localities. Broadleaf inhabiting species such as Anisandrus dispar (Fabricius, 1792), Taphrorychus bicolor (Herbst, 1793), Dryocoetes villosus (Fabricius, 1792), Scolytus laevis Chapuis, 1869 and Scolytus ratzeburgi Janson, 1856 were collected for the second or third time in Western Norway. Several common species – likely neglected in previous sampling efforts – are well established in Western and Northern Norway. Biodiversity of entomopathogenic fungi on bark beetles in Bulgaria has been investi- gated sporadically. The aim of this preliminary study was to find, identify and study mor- phological characteristics of fungal entomopathogens naturally-occurring in populations of three curculionid species – Ips sexdentatus Boern, Ips typographus (L.) and Dryocoetes autographus (Ratz.). Dead pest adults were found under the bark of Pinus sylvestris and Picea abies trees col- lected from forests in the Maleshevska and Vitosha Mountains. Fungal pathogens were isolated into pure cultures on SDAY (Sabouraud dextrose agar with yeast extract) and were identified based on morphological characteristics both on the host and in a culture. Morphological characteristics of the isolates were studied by phenotypic methods. The fungal isolates obtained from dead adults of Ips sexdentatus, Ips typographus and D. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Crypturgus subcribrosus Eggers is removed from synonymy under C. cinereus (Herbst) and reinstated as a valid species based on evidence from DNA sequence data and morphological features. Phylogenetic analyses of Elongation Factor 1α and Cytochrome Oxidase I sequences in conjunction with morphological characters revealed a sister relationship between C. subcribrosus and two Nearctic species of Crypturgus, with C. cinereus unrelated to any of these taxa. Type material of C. cinereus has been located and lectotype with paralectotypes are designated. Amended diagnoses that include DNA barcodes are presented for C. subcribrosus and C. cinereus together with an identification key to the Fen- noscandian species of Crypturgus. 933 REVIEW DNA barcodes for bio-surveillance: regulated and economically important arthropod plant pests1 Muhammad Ashfaq and Paul D.N. Hebert Abstract: Many of the arthropod species that are important pests of agriculture and forestry are impossible to discriminate morphologically throughout all of their life stages. Some cannot be differentiated at any life stage. Over the past decade, DNA barcoding has gained increasing adoption as a tool to both identify known species and to reveal cryptic taxa. Although there has not been a focused effort to develop a barcode library for them, reference sequences are now available for 77% of the 409 species of arthropods documented on major pest databases. Aside from developing the reference library needed to guide specimen identifications, past barcode studies have re- vealed that a significant fraction of arthropod pests are a complex of allied taxa. Because of their importance as pests and disease vectors impacting global agriculture and forestry, DNA barcode results on these arthropods have significant implications for quarantine detection, regulation, and management. The current review discusses these implications in light of the presence of cryptic species in plant pests exposed by DNA barcoding. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution. 1 Molecular Phylogenetics of the Superfamily Curculionoidea (Insecta: Coleoptera) Conrad Paulus Dias Trafford Gillett March 2014 Thesis abstract This thesis examines higher-level evolutionary history within the superfamily Curculionoidea, the most speciose family-level taxon, which includes beetles commonly known as weevils. This is achieved using a phylogenetic approach incorporating the largest datamatrix yet employed for weevil molecular systematics, and includes an investigation into the prospect of obtaining short phylogenetically informative amplicons from archival museum specimens. Newly obtained DNA sequence data is analysed from a variety of mitochondrial and nuclear loci, including 92 mitogenomes assembled through the approach of next-generation sequencing of pooled genomic DNA. The resulting trees are used to test previous morphological- and molecular-based hypotheses of weevil relationships and classification schemes. Mitogenomic-derived trees reveal topologies that are highly congruent with previous molecular studies, but that conflict with some morphological hypotheses. Strong nodal support strengthens inferences into the relationships amongst most weevil families and suggests that the largest family, the Curculionidae, is monophyletic, if the subfamily Platypodinae is excluded.
