Modernism is, at least, one of the most im portant life and thought-tendencies which has ap peared in the Church since the Reformation—of which, in fact, it is a development and in rela tion to which it must be judged. In Roman Cath olic Modernism, George Tyrrell was a constructive and conservative critic, constructive in aim, con servative in method; and to many his views seemed to place religion in a truer perspective than any in which it had been presented in recent genera tions. He had, at once, that sense of tne past, in which Protestantism is so often lacking, and that of the present, in which Catholicism neces sarily fails; and so he -pled, as he himself said, "for a greater realization of the issues at stake than is common with our more lighthearted reform ers, and a greater sympathy with the instinctive (even if not intelligent) repugnances of those whose temples and altars seem doomed to a some what ruthless despoliation." Thus, as A. L. Lilley states, his writings as a whole are pro legomena to any future doctrine of revelation, and may be regarded, also, as A. R. Vidler as serts, as a reply to Liberal Protestantism. His ill. apologetic, therefore, is of the first conse quence, yet it is not an apologetic which can be exploited in the interests of the Catholic, perhaps, of any Church. -

A FORUM ON CATHOLIC ANGLICANISM: “WHAT MAKES CATHOLIC ANGLICANISM DISTINCTIVE?” St. James, King Street, Sydney Saturday, 17 November, 2001 “The Oxford Movement and how it changed the Church” Fr Steven Salmon, Rector, St. John’s, Dee Why Introduction No story in the whole history of the English Church, since St Augustine landed in AD 597, is so splendid as the story of the Oxford Movement. 1 So begins S. L. Ollard’s A Short History of the Oxford Movement, first published in 1915 and still in print. He goes on: [The story of the Oxford Movement] has every sort of interest. It is exciting, romantic, chivalrous, like the story of a crusade. It has its humour as well as its tragedy. And the actors in it were among the most spiritual men who have ever lived in England. They were men of genius besides: poets like Keble, Newman, Isaac Williams, and Faber; men of letters like Newman and Dean Church; preachers whose sermons are read today, divines and theologians whose fame will last as long as Christianity endures. So that a more interesting subject hardly exists in the whole of Church history. 2 My brief for this talk is to show how the Oxford Movement changed the Anglican Church, so although I must touch on it, it is not my intention to give a history of the Oxford Movement. Like Dr Ollard, I will be using the term ‘Oxford Movement’ to describe not just the rather academic concerns of the Tractarians, but the entire Catholic Revival in the Anglican Communion in the nineteenth century and following. -

Through a series of case studies, including an examination of the role of religious controversy in fin-de-siècle Parliamentary politics, it shows that religious belief and practice were more important in turn-of-the-century Britain than has been appreciated. The argument that the onset of secularization in Britain as defined by both a decline in religious attendance and personal belief can be pushed back until at least the 1920s or 1930s is not new. Yet, the insight that religious belief and practice remained a constituent part of late-Victorian and Edwardian national identity and public life has thus far failed to penetrate political, social, and cultural histories of the period. -

ISSN 1522-5668 Journal of Religion & Society The Kripke Center Volume 13 (2011) The “Modern Martyrdom” of Anglo-Catholics in Victorian England Dominic Janes, University of London Abstract The word “martyr” was widely applied in the later nineteenth century to a number of Anglican “ritualist” clergy who had been prosecuted for performing overtly “Catholic” liturgical practices. The focal point for such usage occurred when several individuals were imprisoned for having flouted the Public Worship Regulation Act (1874). Supporters of this legislation accused their opponents of being fakes in that their “modern martyrdom” consisted of little more than short spells in prison. However, Anglo-Catholics connected acts of contemporary defiance with those of the confessors of the early Church. A quasi- hagiographic body of discourse began to coalesce around key figures such as Arthur Tooth and Alexander MacKonochie. This process did not get far because the campaign of persecution was swiftly abandoned, however, the term “martyrdom” has subsequently become widespread in the historical discussion of these men even though none of them died for their faith. This episode highlights the way in which martyrdom can be seen in relation to milder as well as more extreme acts of religious repression and witness. But also, in so far as the cults of saints and martyrs can be seen as being substantially constructed through hagiographies and martyrologies, this episode emphasizes the discursive aspects of martyrdom in general and the role of the media in particular, in the contested emergence of religious heroes. Introduction [1] In the later nineteenth century a movement developed within the Church of England that championed the Catholic rather than the Protestant heritage of Anglicanism.
