Oxford Movement This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on theLearn talk more The Oxford Movement was a movement of High Church members of the Church of England which eventually developed into Anglo-Catholicism. The movement, whose original devotees were mostly associated with the University of Oxford, argued for the reinstatement of some older Christian traditions of faith and their inclusion into Anglican liturgy and theology. They thought of Anglicanism as one of three branches of the "one holy, catholic, and apostolic" Christian church. By the 1840s many participants decided that the Anglican Church lacked grace, and converted to Roman Catholicism. Edward John Henry Bouverie Newman Pusey The movement's philosophy was known as Tractarianism after its series of publications, the Tracts for the Times, published from 1833 to 1841. Tractarians were also disparagingly referred to as "Newmanites" (before 1845) and "Puseyites" (after 1845) after two prominent Tractarians, John Henry Newman and Edward Bouverie Pusey. Other well-known Tractarians included John Keble, Charles Marriott, Richard Froude, Robert Wilberforce, Isaac Williams and William Palmer. Origins and early period In the early nineteenth century, different groups were present in the Church of England. Many, particularly in high office, saw themselves as latitudinarian (liberal) in an attempt to broaden the Church's appeal. Conversely, many clergy in the parishes were Evangelicals, as a result of the revival led by John Wesley. Alongside this, the universities became the breeding ground for a movement to restore liturgical and devotional customs which borrowed heavily from traditions before the English Reformation as well as contemporary Roman Catholic traditions.[1] The immediate impetus for the Tractarian movement was a perceived attack by the reforming Whig administration on the structure and revenues of the Church of Ireland (the established church in Ireland), with the Irish Church Temporalities Bill (1833). -

The Oxford Movement in Leicester in the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries Gerald T. Rimmington During the 1830s a small group of Oxford dons, who were also priests, believing that the Churchof England had strayed from its Catholic roots, began a movement that was to affect the churches in Leicester. This article traces the development of the Oxford Movement, through its earlier manifestation in Tractarianism, to Ritualism, its later form, in a county town that was already a bastion of Nonconformity and where Anglican Evangelicalism had also become fairly strong. Introduction Whether one regards the Oxford Movement as a colourful romantic reversion to the Church of England’s past or as ‘one of the fundamental discontinuities in the history of Anglicanism’, or even, to use Diarmaid McCulloch’s delightful terminology, as the facilitator of ‘a remarkably successful piece of theological alchemy’ to justify restoration of the primacy of the altar within Anglican worship, there can be no doubt that it changed the course of church history in England during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.1 Nigel Yates notes that Trollope’s ‘Mr Oriel’ (in Dr Thorne (1858)) was ‘a man of family and fortune’ who went up to Oxford, ‘had become inoculated there with very High Church principles, and gone into orders influenced by a feeling of enthusiastic love for the priesthood’. Though the novelist’s use of the term ‘high church’ is questionable, for it is not entirely synonymous with the Oxford Movement (or Tractarianism or Ritualism or Anglo-Catholicism) to which Mr. Oriel belonged, he had nevertheless clearly discerned that such clergymen were familiar figures in English towns and cities by that time.2 The intention in this study is to examine the circumstances in which the Oxford Movement was initiated, and thereafter grew, in a significant and rapidly growing county town that was a bastion of Nonconformity. -

Groves On February 28, 1855 a group of six Anglican priests met to found an organization they named The Society of the Holy Cross, hereafter SSC. The chief founder of the Society, Charles Lowder, described the ideas behind the foundation in these words: It was so ordered also, by God's good Providence, that a society of priests had lately been founded in London, called the Society of the Holy Cross. Its objects are to deepen and strengthen the spiritual life of the clergy, to defend the faith of the Church, and then, among others, to carry on and aid Mission work both at home and abroad. -

L. Ollard’s A Short History of the Oxford Movement, first published in 1915 and still in print. He goes on: [The story of the Oxford Movement] has every sort of interest. It is exciting, romantic, chivalrous, like the story of a crusade. It has its humour as well as its tragedy. And the actors in it were among the most spiritual men who have ever lived in England. They were men of genius besides: poets like Keble, Newman, Isaac Williams, and Faber; men of letters like Newman and Dean Church; preachers whose sermons are read today, divines and theologians whose fame will last as long as Christianity endures. So that a more interesting subject hardly exists in the whole of Church history. 2 My brief for this talk is to show how the Oxford Movement changed the Anglican Church, so although I must touch on it, it is not my intention to give a history of the Oxford Movement. Like Dr Ollard, I will be using the term ‘Oxford Movement’ to describe not just the rather academic concerns of the Tractarians, but the entire Catholic Revival in the Anglican Communion in the nineteenth century and following. -

CONTROLLING THE CLERGY OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND: NINETEENTH CENTURY TO THE PRESENT DAY ERIKA KIRlC INTRODUCTION The religious ministry, together with medicine and the law, is one of the oldest professions. Like other professions, ministers of religion have particular rules that govern their behaviour. But unlike other professions, the clergy of the Church of England, formerly of the Church of Rome, have an entirely separate legal system dedicated to the regulation of their conduct, both within the working environment and outside it. The accountability of the clergy under canon law,1 in addition to the dictates of secular law, creates a disciplinary procedure that is without parallel in other professional spheres. For example, an infringement of the general criminal law by a clergyperson may result not only in prosecution in the secular courts, but also proceedings in the quasi-criminal jurisdiction of the ecclesiastical courts. Similarly, where proceedings in the secular courts establish the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage of a clergyperson, this may give rise to disciplinary procedures in the church courts, with legally enforceable consequences. This situation is partly the result of the historical evolution of the two legal systems, as outlined below; but it is also partly a concomitant of the particular role that is occupied by members of the clergy. Expectations of parishioners, who contribute to the costs of ministry, and expectations of members of society in general, suggest that higher standards of conduct are demanded of the clergy than of the laity, and their misdemeanours are dealt with by force of law, rather than self-regulation as in other professions. -
