The most important group of balinese textiles are cotton cloth decorated with the double ikat technique, which is called geringsing. The development of this multimedia application started from collecting data through interviews and observations, then doing interface design, video creation, coding, and testing the application. Tools which were used to develop this application such as Adobe Flash Professional CS 6 and Corel Draw. The result is a multimedia application that covers the history of geringsing cloth, tools and materials needed to make the geringsing cloth, the process of making geringsing, the motives of geringsing, geringsing wearing, and simulation game of merging several motives of geringsing. Hidden Bali Experiences small-group tours that touch the heart of Bali Our Hidden Bali Experiences can be arranged at any time to grant you access to authentic culture that honors tradition and avoids commoditization. Building on more than 20 years of experience of leading culturally sensitive tours in Bali and based on deep relationships with local people and communities, these are intimate 3-day or 4-day tours arranged to fit your travel itineraries and led by expert guides for small groups of 2 to 6 guests. Each experience is themed around a specific aspect of Bali’s heritage, including the Textile Arts, the Festival Cycle, the Performing Arts, and the Natural World. For more information on these Experiences, please visit our website at http://www.threadsoflife.com The Textile Arts Experience The Indonesian archipelago was once the crossroads of the world. For over 3500 years, people have come here seeking fragrant spices, and textiles were the central barter objects in this story of trade, conquest and ancient tradition. An exploration of Bali’s textile art traditions grants us access to this story. Spice trade influences juxtapose with indigenous motifs throughout the archipelago: echoes of Indian trade cloths abound; imagery relates to defining aspects of the local environment; history and genealogy entwine. Uses range from traditional dress, to offerings, to the paraphernalia of marriages and funerals. Our gateway to this world is through the island of Bali, where we steep ourselves in the island’s rich traditions while based at the Umajati Retreat near Ubud. Here we will receive insightful introductions to the local culture, and visit several weavers with which Threads of Life is working to help women create high-quality textiles that balance their desires for sustainable incomes and cultural integrity.

Ethno-Computation: Culturally Specific Design Application of Geringsing Textile Patterns Nyoman Dewi Pebryani 1, Michael C.B. Kleiss 2 1 Clemson University [email protected] 1 Indonesia Institute of The Arts (ISI) Denpasar [email protected] 2 Clemson University [email protected] Abstract. This study focuses on (1) understanding the indigenous algorithm of specific material culture named Geringsing textile patterns, and then (2) transforming the indigenous algorithm into an application that best serves local artisans and younger generation as a design tool and educational tool. Patterns design, which is created in textile as a material culture from a specific area, has a unique design grammar. Geringsing textile is unique to this part of the world because it is produced with double-ikat weaving technique, and this technique is only used in three places in the world. This material culture passes from generation to generation as an oral tradition. To safeguard, document, and digitize this knowledge, a sequential research methodology of ethnography and computation is employed in this study to understand the indigenous algorithm of Geringsing textile patterns, and then to translate the algorithm with computer simulation. This culturally specific design application then is tested by two local artisans and two aspiring artists from the younger generations in the village to see whether this application can serve as a design and educational tool. Keywords: Ethno-Computation, Culturally specific, Indigenous algorithm, Geringsing. 1 Introduction Material culture refers to the physical objects, resources, and spaces that people use to define their culture, therefore material culture is produced based on the cultural knowledge owned by the local people in a specific area.

THE FIBER OF OUR LIVES: A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK FOR LOOKING AT TEXTILES’ MEANINGS BEVERLY GORDON [email protected] I have been fascinated for decades with all of the meanings that fiber and cloth can hold—they are a universal part of human life, and fill an almost endless number of roles in our practical, personal, emotional, social, communicative, economic, aesthetic and spiritual lives. I have worked at finding meaningful ways to both explain textiles’ importance, and organize and synthesize the many disparate ideas that are part of this phenomenon. The following is the holistic framework or conceptual model I have developed that can be used to articulate and compare the meanings of textiles of any given culture or historic period. It is designed to be as inclusive as possible—to allow us to think about textiles and the roles they play in human consciousness and through the full range of human activities and concerns.

Advances in Economics, Business and Management Research, Volume 158 Proceedings of the 5th International Conference on Tourism, Economics, Accounting, Management and Social Science (TEAMS 2020) Development of a Model for Empowering Women Craftsmen Through a Partnership Pattern in Buleleng Regency, Bali Ni Luh Wayan Sayang Telagawathi1,* Ni Nyoman Yulianthini2, Ni Made Suci3. 1,2,3 Management Department, Faculty of Economic Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha, Singaraja, Bali *Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] ABSTRACT This article aims to develop an empowerment model for the small cepuk woven cloth industry that involves the participation of the government, companies/private sector, and tourism industry players. The entrepreneurial potential of the weaving handicraft household business is actually very promising, but the development of the business always faces various obstacles. One of the classic problems of empowering a household business is business development. That is why this applied research explores the potential for social and economic capital of the weaving handicraft business to partner with the government, private sector and tourism actors. This research tries to find potential partnership patterns to be developed in accordance with the existing context in Buleleng Regency, Bali. Empowerment of women craftsmen is chosen on the basis that it is the role of women that drives this business until now. This large potential is still constrained due to the isolation of this household business. In addition, finding innovations for business development by establishing relationships with potential parties is almost never done. So, what happens is a very potential effort to drive the household economy to become undeveloped. That is why universities have a very important role in deciphering the complexity of the problem, and then trying to find alternative partnership models for future development.
