Hastings Congressman Alcee L. Hastings represents District 23 in Florida. He was first elected in 1992 and is currently serving his 11th term in the US Congress. He earned his undergraduate degree from Fisk University in 1958 and received his law degree from Florida A&M University in Tallahassee, both historically Black colleges. Appointed by President Jimmy Carter in 1979, he became the first African-American Federal Judge in the state of Florida, and served in that position for ten years. Throughout his lifetime, Congressman Hastings has championed the rights of minorities, women, the el- derly, children and immigrants. Known throughout the world as an expert in foreign policy, Congressman Hastings has introduced leg- islation advocating diplomacy before military action to settle dis- putes with established and emerging nations and to advance diver- sity in the US government. Among Congress’ most respected voices in international affairs, Congressman Hastings served as President to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly. In 2007, he became the first African- American to Chair the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, where he held the Commission’s first hearings on Black Europeans and Racism in Europe. In 2009, he co-hosted the first Black European Summit and helped to found transformative trans- atlantic diversity and inclusion initiatives such as the Transatlantic Minority Political Leadership Conferences and Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network. Dr Mischa Thompson As a Policy Adviser at the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (U.S. Helsinki Commission), an independent government agency based in Washington DC, Dr Thompson’s responsibilities 1 The order in listing the authors is in accordance with their location within this publication. Authors’ Descriptions 9 include monitoring human rights issues within the 57 European and North American countries that make up the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), with a focus on anti- discrimination, integration and inclusion issues. She also serves as the lead US Policy Adviser at the Commission on annual pro- grammes for diverse policy makers, including the Transatlantic Minority Political Leadership Conferences and Transatlantic Inclusion Leaders Network young leaders programmes, in addition to representing the US government at international meetings on is- sues related to socially disadvantaged populations in Europe and the United States. Prior to being appointed to the Helsinki Commission, she served as a Professional Staff Member and Congressional Fellow within the US House and Senate working on foreign policy, defence/security, trade, economic development, and global racism, tolerance and anti-discrimination issues. Dr Thompson has served as German Marshall Fund Fellow, German Fulbright Scholar and National Science Foundation Fellow. Dr Thompson earned her BS from Howard University and her PhD from the University of Michigan, where her research focused on intergroup relations and socially disadvantaged populations in the US and Europe. Dr Michaël Privot Dr Michael Privot is the Director of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) and an expert in Islamology. He has worked at ENAR since 2006. Previously, he worked as a FNRS Research Fellow at the University of Liège (Belgium). He also has several years’ ex- perience in community building of Muslim communities in Belgium and Europe, and served as a consultant on related issues. He holds a BA in Oriental History and Philology (Islamology), a specialisation in Comparative History of Religions and Arabic (Damas), and a PhD in Languages and Literature from the University of Liège (Belgium). Horton Doctor of Philosophy in Education and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Na’ilah Nasir, Chair This dissertation is an intervention into Critical Whiteness Studies, an ‘additional movement’ to Ethnic Studies and Critical Race Theory. It systematically analyzes key contradictions in working against racism from a white subject positions under post-Civil Rights Movement liberal color-blind white hegemony and "Black Power" counter-hegemony through a critical assessment of two major competing projects in theory and practice: white anti-racism [Part 1] and New Abolitionism [Part 2]. I argue that while white anti-racism is eminently practical, its efforts to hegemonically rearticulate white are overly optimistic, tend toward renaturalizing whiteness, and are problematically dependent on collaboration with people of color. I further argue that while New Abolitionism has popularized and advanced an alternative approach to whiteness which understands whiteness as ‘nothing but oppressive and false’ and seeks to ‘abolish the white race’, its ultimately class-centered conceptualization of race and idealization of militant nonconformity has failed to realize effective practice.

This is in spite of evidence that organizations within this SMI may be unique in their deployment of protest tactics and willingness to utilize violence. Scholarly analysis of other SMIs indicates that identifying diversity in organizational characteristics like professionalization, membership, frames, and organizational strategies is useful for partitioning SMIs. By evaluating the white supremacist SMI in terms of these four organizational characteristics, this study finds substantial evidence that there are eight distinct organizational clusters operating within the white supremacist SMI, that this diversity is driven by deployed organizational strategies, and that this SMI is unique in its use of violence and willingness to deploy a merchandizing-based organizational strategy. These findings provide both an alternative framework through which to understand diversity in the SMI of white supremacy, as well as evidence that the SMI of white supremacy is distinct within the US social movement sector in its deployment of violence and the merchandizing organizational strategies.

Salim Mansur fter the public outrage over the massacre at Charlie Hebdo were brothers Saïd Kouachi and Chérif Kouachi. They were Hebdo, after the denunciations and piles of editorials in their early-thirties born of Algerian immigrant parents in Paris, condemning the chillingly bloody assault on free speech and more or less abandoned to the vagaries of life in poverty. Dès que j'ai appris mercredi le massacre perpétré contre les journalistes de Charlie, par un SMS reçu à Ankara où j'intervenais lors d'un colloque pour faciliter l'accès des femmes aux fonctions électives au niveau local, j'ai immédiatement pensé à Charb et à Gérard Biard. Gérard a répondu tout de suite à mon message, me disant qu'il était à Londres. Mais dès que j'ai pu avoir accès à Internet (pas de wi-fi à l'université d’Ankara) j’ai appris l'horrible nouvelle Cabu, Tignou, Wolinski et Charb avaient été assassinés par des malades mentaux qui s’imaginaient obéir à un dieu... J'ai eu le plaisir de connaitre Charb depuis l'année où il a présidé le jury de la laïcité. Cette année-là, je défendais ardemment la candidature de Djemila Benhabib, pour le prix international. Deux candidatures se sont vite détachées, avec un score très serré. Charb a suivi mon argumentation. Le discours de Djamila lors de la remise du prix justifia pleinement notre choix. Depuis à chaque réunion du jury et lors de la remise des prix, nous avons le plaisir de discuter. En octobre dernier à l'Hôtel de Ville de Paris lors de la remise du prix à Shoukria Haïdar, je lui ai dit mon amusement et mon admiration devant la manière dont il avait montré l'exploitation des mères porteuses dans le dernier numéro du magazine.

These groups range from alternative right, Neo Confederates, White Supremacist to Odinist prison gangs and anti-Muslim groups. These White Power groups have a particular race-based ideology that can be understood relative to their music—a tool that provides central recruitment and cohesive mechanisms. White supremacist rock, called Hatecore, presents the contemporary version of the legacy of racist music such as Oi! and Rock Against Communism. Through the years, this genre produces an idealized model of white supremacist, while also speaking out against the perceived threats, goals, and attitudes within white supremacist spaces. In this thesis, I use content analysis techniques to attempt to answer two main questions. The first is: What is the ideal type of white supremacist that is explicitly produced in Hatecore music? Secondly, what are the concerns of these bands as they try to frame these within white supremacist spaces? Results show that white supremacist men are lauded as violent and racist, while women must be servile to them. Finally, white supremacist concerns are similar to previous research, but highlight growing hatred toward Islam and Asians.
