Height 21 1/2 inches, width 21 5/8 inches. Descended through the Woolman family until 1941.

A typed note affixed to the back of this lot relays that Hannah Woolman would have been seventeen at the time she wrought this sampler. The initials at the sides are the initials for Hannah’s great grandparents, Samuel and Jane Woolman; and her grandparents, John and Naomi Woolman, and John and Sarah Grubb Wright Woolman, parents to Anna Woolman. The verse is a quotation from English essayist

Joseph Addison (May 1, 1672 - June 1719 London). 340 As seen in Betty Ring, Girlhood Embroidery, Volume II, the stag worked on Pennsylvania samplers was probably derived from Johann Sibmacher’s pattern book Newes Modelbuch In Kupffer gemacht of 1604.
