We, power. or more accurately, our banner, has frozen the discussion forum at Hyperscale, and to all those affected, I offer my sincere apology. The problem came about as a result as a server failure with our IP, and really was our fault. Unfortunately, we reacted to the problem after some twenty hours, which we, and I personally, feel very sorry for. So, once again, my apologies to all those that were affected. With December, the snow and the cold, we soldier on towards Christmas, and ultimately the end of the year. Christmas is nice, and I have hung my lights in the windows, and I am trying to avoid the inundation of Christmas music in the stores. Around this time of year, at least with respect to sales, I try to shorten the year a bit. Appendix 10B SAAF Squadrons – present and past 1 Current Squadrons 2 Squadron (AFB Makhado, Makhado) Sursam Prorusque (Upward and Onward) Established in 1939, 2 Squadron’s war history begins in May 1940 when 1 Squadron’s Maj NG Niblock- Stuart with 19 pilots and 24 ground crew left AFB Waterkloof for Cairo, where they began training on Gauntlets at Abu Seur. Another group under Lt S. van Breda Theron received training on Hawker Hurricanes and Hawker Furies before leaving for Kenya in late May. It during this time they received two cheetah cubs 2 as mascots, and their name, the “Flying Cheetahs” was born. A last group left for Mombassa by boat, also late in May. Together, they formed the foundation of 2 Squadron. Corporal Jack Friedman designed the crest and on October 1 2 Squadron was officially born - although they had been operating independently of 1 Squadron for months. On the completion of the East African Campaign in April 1941 the squadron redeployed to the Middle East, with some elements doing so via Durban. During the campaign 2 Squadron claimed 8 Italian aircraft confirmed shot down. Only one aircraft was shot down and only two pilots were taken prisoner of war after both made emergency landings. The first major melee came on December 4 when ten Curtis Tomahawks engaged more than 30 German Junkers Ju87 Stukas, which cover provided by 20 Italian Macchi 200’s and Fiat A50’s. 2 Squadron confirmed 6 enemy shot down and another 6 possibly shot down against a loss of only two pilots. -

THROUGH i ADVERSITY THE HISTORY OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE REGIMENT Kingsley M Oliver Western Desert 1941-42 ii Western Desert 1941-42 iii iv ABOUT THE AUTHOR ABOUT THE BOOK In the period between the first and second world wars the Royal Air Force - in common with many other air forces - believed that its real battles would be fought in the air and that there would be little danger of enemy attack on its airfields, installations and aircraft on the ground. In the unlikely event of such a threat developing, the Royal Air Force was confident that the British Army - with its much larger resources and its responsibility for the land battle - would always be able to come to the defence of vulnerable RAF stations. In 1940 and 1941, however, Britain’s enemies decided to change the rules of the game and their relentless attacks on airfields and aircraft on the ground rapidly eroded the effectiveness of the Royal Air Force in air combat to the extent that the loss of British air superiority in France, the Middle East and the Far East made the defeat of the British land and naval forces inevitable. Kressel and Reuven Aharoni Is there empirical evidence supporting the surprising Ḥamas claim that a large part of the Palestinian Arabs are not indigenous to this area but rather immigrated from surrounding countries? On March 23, 2012, the Ḥamas minister of the interior and of national security, Fathi Ḥammad, slammed Egypt for not helping to prevent fuel shortages in the Gaza Strip. He then averred that Gaza deserved more brotherly assistance from Egypt, saying that “half of the Palestinians are Egyptian and the other half are Saudis.”1 This dramatic assertion raises questions. Was Ḥammad simply overstating his people’s links to a country whose help he sought, or was he reporting something true, if largely unknown, about Palestinian roots? The answer matters, because the statement marks perhaps the first time a prominent Palestinian leader openly departed from a well-entrenched mythology about the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
