June 2010 List tel 0115 982 7500 fax 0115 982 7020 JUNE 2010 LIST See inside for valid dates Dear Customer If you browse outside of the ‘mainstream’ labels this month, you will find some truly exciting recordings which are well worth investigating. On the Halle label, the excellent combination of the revitalised Halle & Mark Elder bring us a live performance of Wagner’s final part of the Ring Cycle, Gotterdammerung (page 2), an event which has already drawn superlative responses from critics & public alike. “...A musical triumph from start to finish ...a fifteen-minute standing ovation greeted the conclusion of the second of the two concerts”. This is one definitely not to miss. The outstanding Monteverdi/Gardiner Bach series on SDG continues with volume 11 of the complete Cantatas (page 4) - if you are quick, you can buy this set and the whole SDG back catalogue from us at a significant discount. The ‘Chandos Opera in English’ series has many dedicated followers and at last, the BBC 1971 Sadler’s Wells recording of Monteverdi’s Poppea (page 4) with a resplendent Janet Baker appears. Conducted by Raymond Leppard, it has been re-mastered especially for this release – a long awaited gem. If Sir Adrian Boult is a conductor you admire, then the new compilation of re-mastered largely 1st releases with the LPO on First Hand Records is definitely for you (page 10) – a fascinating 3CD set including Boult himself narrating the Britten Young Person’s Guide. Abstract Title of Dissertation: INFLUENCES AND TRANSFORMATIONS: 19TH- CENTURY SOLO AND COLLABORATIVE PIANO REPERTOIRE Miori Sugiyama, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2012 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Rita Sloan School of Music, Piano Division This dissertation is an exploration of the inter-relationships of genres in the collaborative piano repertoire, particularly in music of the 19th century, an especially important period for collaborative piano repertoire. During this time, much of the repertoire gave equal importance to the piano in duo and ensemble repertoire. Starting with Schubert, and becoming more apparent with the development of the German lied, the piano became a more integral part of any composition, the piano part being no longer simplistic but rather a collaborative partner with its own voice. Mendelssohn transformed the genre of lieder by writing them, without their words, for solo piano. In addition to creating some of the greatest and most representative lieder in the Romantic period, composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Strauss continued the evolution of the sonata by writing works that were more technically demanding on the performer, musically innovative, and structurally still evolving. In the case of Chopin who wrote mostly piano works, a major influence came from the world of opera, particularly the Bel Canto style. In exploring two specific genres, vocal and instrumental piano works by these composers; it is fascinating to see how one genre translates to another genre. This was especially true in the vocal and instrumental works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Strauss. All of these composers, with the exception of Chopin, contributed equally to both the song and sonata genres.

  • Grigori Sokolov
GRIGORI SOKOLOV at the Théâtre des Champs- Elysées - Paris, 2002 A dim light picks out the outlines of the hall. Suddenly a massive shadow appears and moves swiftly over to the keyboard, the only brightly lit surface to stand out from the large coffin- like box in the center of the stage. There follows the vaguest of unsmiling acknowledgments in the general direction of the audience, and then the music begins. Throughout the next two hours this music will keep its listeners enthralled with its extraordinary intensity as the audience senses the formidable physical, pianistic, musical and emotional presence of this most secretive of present- day pianists, Grigory Sokolov. S ecretive, he certainly is. A man of vast culture, cheerful and even mischievous offstage, he seems to be cocooned within his own irrefutable logic. Only his musical thoughts are susceptible of being imparted to the public, thoughts embodied beneath his fingers with the utmost interiority and within the ephemeral and exclusive framework of the concert hall. All other considerations, including those of career and self- promotion, are rejected as external to the music. They are, strictly speaking, irrelevant. The phenomenon of the artist retiring behind his art is both intriguing and salutary. It no doubt accounts partly to the fact that Sokolov is still relatively unknown to the public at large. Yet there are many people who are convinced that, following the deaths of musicians like Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli, Glenn Gould and Sviatoslav Richter, he is now the greatest

  • FESTSPILLNOTEN 2002 Sol-Hverv
– Johan Falkberget Vinterfestspill i Bergstaden blir arrangert for 4. gong i år. For første gong blir det gitt statleg tilskott, kanalisert gjennom festival- tilskottsordninga i Norsk kulturråd.
