Spoštovani/-e gostje, dragi/-e ljubitelji/-ce dobre glasbe!

Dear guest and dear fans of great music!

The University of Ljubljana Academy of Music has been organizing the summer school for six years in a row. While it was so far dedicated only to early music, the scope of this year’s edition has been broadened. ACADEMIA MUSICÆ LABACENSIS 2020 will be a challenge to all of us, organizers and musicians, who will together prove that despite the virus we can still stage such events, which meet the expectations of both the experts and the gen- eral public eager for new knowledge and concerts.

The first event, a masterclass for cello and chamber music, will be led by our teacher Gal Faganel, who is also active in the United States. The masterclass for organ and musical experiences related to it will be organized by professors of the Academy of Music Rena- ta Bauer and Andrej Misson as well as guest Gašper Jereb. The Guitar Festival features our teachers Andrej Grafenauer, Tomaž Rajterič, Katja Porovne Silič and Izidor Erazem Grafenauer as well as a guest from Zagreb, Krešimir Bedek. In the “meeting point” for viola and chamber music, students will come together with Irish violist Garth Knox and our two professors, Dutch Emile Samama Cantor and Slovenian Maja Rome. The vocal seminar will take place in the beginning of September. For this purpose, the Academy of Music’s officials and the Singing Department have invited a world-acclaimed artist, Ar- gentinian-born, Austria-based Slovenian singer Bernarda Fink Inzko. 2020 summer school will be concluded with the Jazz, Big Band, Vocal and String Incubators as well as the Jazz Festival, held by teachers of our Academy–Matej Hotko, Peter Ugrin and Jaka Pucihar– and Jana Šušteršič and Nina Novak as guests.

For aspiring young artists, summer school can be a great encouragement and a strong motivation in their quest for personal expression and can help them find their career path, As for the general public, summer school is a great place to discover many a talent in the making.

Dear students and teachers, welcome! I wish you a lot of success and inspiration! The summer could hardly be better for both the musicians and the audience, don’t you agree?

Whatever path you choose — performer, teacher, scholar — the Ljubljana Academy of Music will provide you with a thorough and rigorous conservatory-level training that will guide you on that journey.

AEC, Medinea, CEEC, GMEL in glasbeno-izobraževalne zveze »Belt and Road«.

Small is Good The Ljubljana Academy of Music offers a three-to-one student to faculty ratio. This means you will benefit from significant individual attention and dedicated instruction. But small does not mean limited. As a leading Central European music institution of higher learning with an eighty-year history and unique geographical position, the Academy’s music program is based on a comprehensive synthesis of Italian, Germanic, Hungarian and Slavic music traditions. The academy offers the students many performance opportunities. There are over 150 student performances concerts and events annually. Every year the students are the recipients of over a hundred awards at national and international competitions. Our graduates have a high employment rate and regularly win auditions for interna- tional orchestras such as the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra, the Mediterranean Youth Orchestra, Nei suoni dei luoghi, CEMAN, Euphony, and others. An integrated part of the European-wide Bologna system of comparable standards, the Academy is also affiliat- ed with a number of international associations and higher music education networks — for example the AEC, Medinea, CEEC, GMEL and the Music Education Alliance Across the “Belt and Road”.

Tomaž Rajterič was born in Ljubljana, where he started his music education at the age of eight. He made his fi rst steps on the guitar at the age of ten and later studied in Geneva, Laus- anne and Salzburg. Early, he started performing on concert stages and at- tending competitions for young musi- cians, where he regularly received top awards. Before the age of twenty, he was prize winner of important interna- tional competitions (Sablé, Belgrade, Rio de Janeiro). As a soloist or a member of different chamber groups, especially duos with notable in- strumentalists and singers, he has performed across Slovenian, around Europe in South America, the USA and Asia. He is invited to international guitar festivals and collaborates with different orchestras. He is considered a sensible performer of guitar music, who ap- proaches works from different style periods–from the renaissance, baroque masters and Bach, classicism and romanticism to popular Spanish and Latin American composers and contemporary music–with equal zeal. He has successfully collaborated with Slovenian composers, premiering a number of their works. He likes to place their music in his concert programmes regularly, for which he gets a favourable reception by the audience. His discography includes three solo records: one with music by Albeniz and Villa-Lobos, another with selected guitar works from the 20th century and the third with contemporary Slovenian music. In addition, he has made many recordings for the archive of the Radio Slovenia. Beside performing and recording, he is Full Professor at the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana.

Thereafter he played with most of the leading groups in London in a mixture of all repertoires, from baroque to contemporary music. In 1983 he was invited by to become a member of the Ensemble Intercon- temporain in Paris, where he had the chance to do much solo playing (including concertos directed by Pierre Boulez) and chamber music, touring widely and playing in international festivals. Garth joined the Arditti String Quartet in 1990 , playing in all the major concert halls of the world, working closely with and giving fi rst performances of pieces by most of today’s leading composers including Ligeti, Kurtag, Berio, Xenakis, Lachenmann, Cage, Feldman and Stockhausen (the famous Helicopter Quartet). Since leaving the quartet in 1998, Garth has given premieres by Henze, Ligeti, Schnittke, Fer- neyhough, James Dillon, George Benjamin and many others. He also collaborates regularly in theatre and dance projects and has written and performed shows for children and young audiences. Improvisation is also an important part of his musical activity. Garth has recently begun to explore the possibilities of the viola d’amore in new music, with and without electronics, and is in the process of creating a new repertoire for this instrument. His album D’Amore (EMI New Series 1925) features old and new music for the viola d’amore. He now lives in Paris and gives recitals, concertos and chamber music concerts all over Eu- rope, the USA and Japan. His solo album Works for Viola won the coveted Deutsche Schall- platen Preis in Germany.

This year, for the first time, six days of the summer school of the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana will be dedicated to the Jazz Incubator 2020. Five days of intensive workshops divided into three groups will be led by acclaimed teachers: Matej Hotko (the Big Band Incubator), Jana Šušteršič (the Vocal Incubator) and Peter Ugrin (the String Incubator). The three groups will be connected in the courses of Jaka Pucihar (arranging) and Nina Novak (promotion). The final day will be dedicated to performances of various smaller jazz and pop bands as well as vocal, string and orchestral ensembles. An open-air stage in the centre of Ljubljana will host the participants of the Jazz Incubator as well as other well-known musicians. The Jazz Incubator is intended for musicians with at least intermediate level of playing or singing and music theory, who wish to develop their primary sense for mu- sic, jazz and improvisation.

Big Band inkubator/Big Band incubator (Matej Hotko) V okviru Big band inkubatorja bomo sestavili dva jazzovska orkestra. Eden bo namen- jen vsem, ki imajo vsaj kakšno predhodno izkušnjo skupinskega izvajanja glasbe, medtem ko bo koncertni big band predelal nekaj najtežjega svetovnega repertoarja orkestrskega jazza.

As part of the Big Band Incubator we will form two jazz orchestras. The first orchestra is intended for those with limited experience in ensemble playing, while the concert big band will study some of the most demanding works of orchestral jazz. Both groups will perform at the final Jazz Festival of the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana. The repertory will be adapted to the participants’ level of playing. In addition to jazz works, we will look at Cuban music. The program is intended for students of secondary and university jazz programmes as well as semi-professional and professional musicians.

Poletna sola 2020.indd 35 17. 07. 2020 08:23:50 Matej Hotko je eden najvidnejših kontra- basistov mlajše jazzovske generacije, sicer diplo- mant newyorškega Man- hattan School of Music.

Matej Hotko is one of the leading double bassists of the younger jazz generation, a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music, NY. He studied with world-acclaimed artist, such as Mike Abene, Gary Dial, Chris Rosenberg, among others. He plays in both small ensembles and orchestras, performing home and abroad. Since 2010, he has been teaching in the Jazz Department of the Academy of Music and leading the Big Band of the Academy of Music. In 2009, he was awarded the Recognition of Important Works of Art by the University of Ljubljana. He is the founder of the B.A.S.E. Music School, the largest private music school in Slo- venia. In addition to his work with big bands, he dedicates a great deal of his time to developing new music teaching methods and more encompassing music education in Slovenia.

Poletna sola 2020.indd 36 17. 07. 2020 08:23:50 The Vocal Incubator, which covers all aspects of singing, will be divided into several subprogrammes, focusing on vocal technique as the basis, a correct posture and breath- ing exercises. Furthermore, we will learn about different jazz styles and practice improvi- sation. As the lyrics can be considered equally important part of vocal repertoire as the music, we will encourage the participants to express their own thoughts. Finally, we will look at other factors which contribute to a better and more confi dent performance.

Anja Šušteršič graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Bos- ton and continued her education at the Spanish campus of the same university. Before that, she enrolled into the Belgrade Faculty of Music at the tender age of seventeen to study the piano. During this time, she collaborated with the bend Neverne Bebe. She gained her acclaim in Slo- venia after winning in the TV show Slovenia’s Got Talent in 2014. She has performed with such giants of contemporary music as Victor Woo- ten, Patrice Rushen, Victor Mendoza, among others. In addition to per- forming as a pianist and a singer, she teaches singing at the B.A.S.E. Music School and as a guest lecturer at the Berklee College of Music.

Poletna sola 2020.indd 37 17. 07. 2020 08:23:51 Godalni inkubator/String Incubator (Peter Ugrin) Glasbeniki vseh ravni jazzovskega predznanja bodo lahko v okviru Godalnega inkuba- torja nadgradili znanje violine, viole in violončela.

Musicians of all levels will be able to develop their playing of violin, viola and cello in the String Incubator. In the field of jazz, all three instruments are considered deficient. For this reason, we will focus on forming smaller jazz ensembles, which will perform with their selected repertoire on the final day of this year’s workshop on the festival stage. In this way, we would aim to develop quality jazz education and teach the participants about the possibilities of playing jazz and improvising on these string instruments.

Peter Ugrin is a soloist, improviser and member of various jazz groups, most notably Artbeat- ers and Swingtan, a teacher of jazz violin at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana and a teacher of viola at the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana. He graduated in jazz violin from the New School of Jazz in New York and in viola from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. Moreover, he is the conductor of GveriLLaz Big Band, which won First Prize in the IBBC interna- tional big band competition. With his band Artbeaters, he won the highest prize in the Sixth International Jazz Competition in Bucharest and awards for best group, best performance and original composition at the Jazzinty workshop in 2013. Besides working in the field of jazz, he regularly gives concerts of classical music as a member of different chamber ensembles.

Udeležencem bomo na ta način pomagali razviti veščine ustvarjanja in jim predstavili osnovna promocijska orodja, s pomočjo katerih bo njihova glasba dosegla poslušalce.

These subjects related to all three incubators deal with the topics important for every musician. The participants will develop their creativity and self-promotion skills, which will help them reach the audience.

This subject deals with music theory and types of chords, which we will use for analy- sis of a particular piece of music both in terms of form as well as harmony and bass line. We will work towards playing the melody and the accompaniment simultaneously and take a step further by improvising and reharmonizing.

As part of this course, we will look at the music of different genres (blues, swing, Latin, funky, pop, ballad), focusing on the preferences of the participants. Furthermore, we will use practical examples to develop arranging skills, encompassing all key elements, from introduction, melody, bass lines etc.

Poletna sola 2020.indd 39 17. 07. 2020 08:23:51 Jaka Pucihar studied composition and mu- sic theory with Alojz Srebotnjak, graduating from the Academy of Music of the University of Ljubljana. Since 1999, he has been lecturing jazz harmony, arrang- ing and improvisation at the same institution. He received a Prešeren Award for Students. He is the co-author of the popular piano method books My Friend the Piano, which has been published in the Slovenian, Croatian and English languages. In addition to composing and arranging, he works as a performing artist, collaborating with renowned Slovenian musicians, such as Irena Grafenauer, Vita Mavrič, Mate Bekavac, and larger ensembles, including the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra and Big Band.

This course provides the participants with basic information on how to communicate with concert organizers, the media and other supporters of artists, including national and local offices, sponsors and donors. We will shed light on examples of good practice and highlight the perils that are hard to avoid for musicians. Finally, we will look at how to set a proper timeline for particular steps of promotion.

In this course, we will learn how write a biography–both a short one used as part of media articles upon publishing an album or a single, and a longer one used, for example, when ap- plying for the status of a freelance musician to the ministry. This is a practical course, meaning that each participant will have written his/her bio by the end it.

Promotion materials for a concert tour or an album are an important aspect of music promotion, which is nowadays the starting point for media publicity and for reaching an audience. This course is practical, giving the participants basic information about music business.
