The tour features eight outstanding performances in historic venues, including the famous Berlin Philharmonie and Vienna State Opera, and visits to places where the great composers lived and worked. The modern architectural treasures of Berlin, the baroque splendours of Prague and the grandeur of Vienna’s historic buildings are arguably seen to best advantage under wintry skies. Afterwards a local guide takes us on a coach tour of Berlin. There will be a particular focus on the sites that shaped Germany’s history in the 20th century, including the Reichstag and the Berlin Wall. After our welcome lunch, the afternoon is free for you to explore the city at your own pace. After a talk on this evening’s performance, we walk to nearby Museum Island, where you will be free to explore the museums independently. We suggest visiting the Neues Museum which houses the city’s magnificent Egyptian collection, including the bust of Nefertiti. Other highlights include the Pergamon Museum, containing extraordinary buildings from Persia, Turkey and the Middle East which were brought to Berlin in the time of the Second German Empire. Overnight Berlin (B) Saturday 24 December Christmas in Berlin Every year in the lead-up to Christmas, Berlin shines in a festive blaze of lights. There are about 60 Christmas markets to explore. Whether traditional or trendy – there’s something for everyone. Continue the festive cheer with a traditional German Christmas dinner together. Overnight Berlin (B, D) Sunday 25 December – Performance iII Christmas Day Merry Christmas! After a talk on tonight’s performance the rest of the morning is at leisure. In the early afternoon we take a coach to the Germäldegalerie to view the impressive collection of Old Master paintings. The gallery boasts one of the world’s most important collections of European painting from the 13th to 18th century. Masterpieces from all epochs in the history of art are on display here, including paintings by van Eyck, Bruegel, Dürer, Raphael, Titian, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Vermeer. This evening we travel to the Deutsche Oper to attend a performance of the well known opera La Bohème. This morning we will have a guided walking tour of the Old Town, ending at the Charles Bridge which spans the Vltava River.
