Our Special Guests Pedro Nájera Quezada Pedro Nájera Quezada, july -1985- MX, is a student in the Autonomous University of San Luis Potosí (UASLP) as an agroecology engineer. He is focusing on studies about natural resources management and other sustainable techniques for managing rangelands. For the last 6 years he has been working on its own cacti nursery producing plants by organic and natural means, 5 years locating, evaluating and monitoring cacti populations and 4 years monitoring bird migrations, presences and densities in the SLP state. He Is a participative certifier for organic agricultural practices and products in the Mexican Association for organic markets, an association that looks for fair-trade, healthy ecosystems and sustainable production, also he is an active member at the civil association Sierra de San Miguelito A.C. that focuses its efforts for the declaration of an Area for Natural Protection (ANP) in this mountain range. He has also been publishing nature pictures in social networks to prompt the local knowledge of biodiversity and its richness. This species’ distribution is characterized by the agglomerated dispersion syndrome, e.g. clusters of many sub-populations with high number of individuals (especially in the more pristine areas); in order to formulate an appropriate description of the distribution I have segregated all the populations into geographically isolated groups. -

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Southwest Region, Albuquerque, New Mexico. 65 pp. + 2 appendices. i Tobusch Fishhook Cactus Species Status Assessment - Final EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Tobusch fishhook cactus is a small cactus, with curved “fishhook” spines, that is endemic to the Edwards Plateau of Texas. It was federally listed as endangered on November 7, 1979 (44 FR 64736) as Ancistrocactus tobuschii. At that time, fewer than 200 individuals had been documented from 4 sites. Tobusch fishhook cactus is now confirmed in 8 central Texas counties: Bandera, Edwards, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, Real, Uvalde, and Val Verde. In recent years, over 4,000 individuals have been documented in surveys and monitoring plots. Recent phylogenetic evidence supports classifying Tobusch fishhook cactus as Sclerocactus brevihamatus ssp. tobuschii. It is distinguished morphologically from its closest relative, S. brevihamatus ssp. brevihamatus, on the basis of yellow versus pink- or brown-tinged flowers, fewer radial spines, and fewer ribs. Additionally, subspecies tobuschii is endemic to limestone outcrops of the Edwards Plateau, while subspecies brevihamatus occurs in alluvial soils in the Tamaulipan Shrublands and Chihuahuan Desert. A recent investigation found genetic divergence between the two subspecies, although they may interact genetically in a narrow area where their ranges overlap. -

Cactus Species Turnover and Diversity Along a Latitudinal Transect in the Chihuahuan Desert Region

Arita Received: 7 February 2007 / Accepted: 4 December 2007 © Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2007 Abstract A standardized sampling method was used to evaluate turnover ( diversity) among cactus species assemblages along a 798 km long latitudinal megatransect across the Chihuahuan Desert Region, from north-central Mexico to southern Texas. A total of 71 cactus species were found along the megatransect, 66.2% of which appeared at low frequencies, mostly as a consequence of their highly discontinuous distribution pattern. At the scale the study was conducted, there was always species turnover among cactus assemblages. The rate of turnover among contiguous sites primarily Xuctuated from low to medium, but when all site combinations were considered (contiguous and non-contiguous), medium diversity values were predominant ( = 0.331–0.66); however, 25.4% of the site pair combinations registered high values ( = 0.661–1.0). Our results showed that turnover among cactus species assemblages in the CDR does not consist for the most part of a process of species succession in the geographic space. Instead, we concluded that the continuous spatial changes in cactus species composition are primarily explained by the commonly intermittent distribution patterns of the species, by the presence in the megatran- sect of species at the margin of their distribution range, and, to a lesser extent, by the existence of narrowly endemic species. A taxonomic backbone at the genus level is provided that reflects the current state of knowledge and accepts 749 genera for the order. A detailed review of the literature of the past two decades shows that enormous progress has been made in understanding overall phylogenetic relationships in Caryophyllales. The process of re-circumscribing families in order to be monophyletic appears to be largely complete and has led to the recognition of eight new families (Anacampserotaceae, Kewaceae, Limeaceae, Lophiocarpaceae, Macarthuriaceae, Microteaceae, Montiaceae and Talinaceae), while the phylogenetic evaluation of generic concepts is still well underway. As a result of this, the number of genera has increased by more than ten percent in comparison to the last complete treatments in the Families and genera of vascular plants” series. A checklist with all currently accepted genus names in Caryophyllales, as well as nomenclatural references, type names and synonymy is presented. Notes indicate how extensively the respective genera have been studied in a phylogenetic context. -

We have now determined the lignin types in the seed coats of 130 different cactus species. Lignin in the vegetative tissues of cacti is of the normal guaiacyl/syringyl (G/S) type, but members of most genera within the subfamily Cactoidae possess seed coat lignin of the novel C-type only, which we show is a homopolymer formed by endwise –O–4-coupling of caffeyl alcohol monomers onto the growing polymer, resulting in benzodioxane units. However, the species examined within the genera Coryphantha, Cumarinia, Escobaria and Mammillaria (Cactoideae) mostly had normal G/S lignin in their seeds, as did all six species in the subfamily Opuntioidae that were examined.
