ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: WAR AND RESISTANCE: THE PHILIPPINES, 1942-1944 James Kelly Morningstar, Doctor of History, 2018 Dissertation directed by: Professor Jon T. Sumida, History Department What happened in the Philippine Islands between the surrender of Allied forces in May 1942 and MacArthur’s return in October 1944? Existing historiography is fragmentary and incomplete. Memoirs suffer from limited points of view and personal biases. No academic study has examined the Filipino resistance with a critical and interdisciplinary approach. No comprehensive narrative has yet captured the fighting by 260,000 guerrillas in 277 units across the archipelago. This dissertation begins with the political, economic, social and cultural history of Philippine guerrilla warfare. The diverse Islands connected only through kinship networks. The Americans reluctantly held the Islands against rising Japanese imperial interests and Filipino desires for independence and social justice. World War II revealed the inadequacy of MacArthur’s plans to defend the Islands. The General tepidly prepared for guerrilla operations while Filipinos spontaneously rose in armed resistance. After his departure, the chaotic mix of guerrilla groups were left on their own to battle the Japanese and each other. While guerrilla leaders vied for local power, several obtained radios to contact MacArthur and his headquarters sent submarine-delivered agents with supplies and radios that tie these groups into a united framework. MacArthur’s promise to return kept the resistance alive and dependent on the United States. The repercussions for social revolution would be fatal but the Filipinos’ shared sacrifice revitalized national consciousness and created a sense of deserved nationhood. The guerrillas played a key role in enabling MacArthur’s return. -

POVERTY AND SOCIAL ANALYSIS AND STRATEGY Poverty targeting: General intervention A. Links to the National Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Growth Strategy and Country Partnership Strategy The project objectives support the Philippine Development Plan (PDP), 2017–2022,a which targets reducing poverty incidence from 21.6% in 2015 to 14.0% by 2022, or by about 6 million people. Among the targets under the strategic framework of the PDP, 2017–2022 are that (i) growth will be more inclusive, as manifested by a lower poverty incidence in rural areas, from 30% in 2015 to 20% in 2022; and (ii) the unemployment rate will decline from the current 5.6% (2017) to 3%–5% in 2022. The PDP notes that infrastructure undergirds a country’s socioeconomic development, the more strategically distributed it is—both by sectoral and spatially—the better it is for inclusive growth and sustainable development. A principal objective of Asian Development Bank (ADB) support for the Philippines is to help in the achievement of high, inclusive, and sustainable growth. Support for infrastructure development, including transport, forms a core part of ADB’s operational strategy for the country. B. Results from the Poverty and Social Analysis during PPTA or Due Diligence 1. Key poverty and social issues. Poverty incidence in the Philippines in 2015 was estimated at 21.6%, equivalent to about 22 million Filipinos who cannot afford their basic needs. -

DANSER Of the Botanical Laboratory of the University, Groningen, Netherlands TWO PLATES A revision of the Philippine Loranthaceae has already twice been given, though in a more concise form, by Merrill.1 The present revision is, in many respects, only an extension of Merrill’s. New are the keys for all genera and species; the complete descriptions for all species, usually after all materials available; the distribution lists as complete as possible; and many criticisms of the nomenclature. In many points, such as the synonymy of older Philippine literature, I have had to follow Merrill blindly; also it deserves to be mentioned that the careful labeling of the material in the Bureau of Science herbarium and the clear indication of good types are Merrill’s work. I am, however, also greatly indebted to Dr. Eduardo Quisumbing, curator of the Philippine National Herbarium, Bureau of Science, for his kindness in twice sending me the Philippine Loranthaceae - once to Buitenzorg and once to Groningen. Also to the directors of other herbaria, who kindly sent me Philippine Loranthacese to be taken up in my revision, I feel very thankful. PART II METRO MANILA AND ITS 200KM RADIUS SPHERE CHAPTER 7 GENERAL PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA CHAPTER 7 GENERAL PROFILE OF THE STUDY AREA 7.1 PHYSICAL PROFILE The area defined by a sphere of 200 km radius from Metro Manila is bordered on the northern part by portions of Region I and II, and for its greater part, by Region III. Region III, also known as the reconfigured Central Luzon Region due to the inclusion of the province of Aurora, has the largest contiguous lowland area in the country. Its total land area of 1.8 million hectares is 6.1 percent of the total land area in the country. Of all the regions in the country, it is closest to Metro Manila. The southern part of the sphere is bound by the provinces of Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon, all of which comprise Region IV-A, also known as CALABARZON. 7.1.1 Geomorphological Units The prevailing landforms in Central Luzon can be described as a large basin surrounded by mountain ranges on three sides. On its northern boundary, the Caraballo and Sierra Madre mountain ranges separate it from the provinces of Pangasinan and Nueva Vizcaya. In the eastern section, the Sierra Madre mountain range traverses the length of Aurora, Nueva Ecija and Bulacan. The Zambales mountains separates the central plains from the urban areas of Zambales at the western side. The region’s major drainage networks discharge to Lingayen Gulf in the northwest, Manila Bay in the south, the Pacific Ocean in the east, and the China Sea in the west. -

ANTHROPOLOGICAL PAPERS OF THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY VOLUME XXIII NEW YORK PUBLISHED BY ORDER OF THE TRUSTEES 1925 Editor CLARK WISSLER FOREWORD Louis ROBERT SULLIVAN Since this volume is largely the work of the late Louis Robert Sulli- van, a biographical sketch of this able anthropologist, will seem a fitting foreword. Louis Robert Sullivan was born at Houlton, Maine, May 21, 1892. He was educated in the public schools of Houlton and was graduated from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine, in 1914. During the following academic year he taught in a high school and on November 24, 1915, he married Bessie Pearl Pathers of Lewiston, Maine. He entered Brown University as a graduate student and was assistant in zoology under Professor H. E. Walters, and in 1916 received the degree of master of arts. From Brown University Mr. Sullivan came to the American Mu- seum of Natural History, as assistant in physical anthropology, and during the first years of his connection with the Museum he laid the foundations for his future work in human biology, by training in general anatomy with Doctor William K. Gregory and Professor George S. Huntington and in general anthropology with Professor Franz Boas. From the very beginning, he showed an aptitude for research and he had not been long at the Museum ere he had published several important papers. These activities were interrupted by our entrance into the World War. Mr. Sullivan was appointed a First Lieutenant in the Section of Anthropology, Surgeon-General's Office in 1918, and while on duty at headquarters asisted in the compilation of the reports on Defects found in Drafted Men and Army Anthropology.
