He is the author of a book on workplace conflict and collective action (Workplace Con- flict, Mobilisation and Solidarity in Argentina) and editor of Alternative Forms of Work Organisation. He has also published journal articles and book chap- ters on mobilisation theory, workers’ self-management and trade unionism in Argentina. Sheila Cohen is a trade union researcher and writer. She is Senior Research Fellow at the Work and Research Unit (WERU), University of Hertfordshire. She is the author of Ramparts of Resistance: Why Workers Lost Their Power and How to Get It Back, and most recently a history of the main trade union branch at Ford Dagenham in the UK, Notoriously Militant. Ralph Darlington is Professor of Employment Relations at the University of Salford, UK.     MARX, THE PRESENT CRISIS AND THE FUTURE OF LABOUR* Ernest Mandel For several years, the political thesis that human emancipation can no longer rely on the 'proletariat', the class of wage labour, has been increasingly buttressed by economic arguments. Some posit that wage labour is receding rapidly from its position as the main sector of the active population, as the result of automation, robotisation, mass unemployment, growth of small independent business firms, etc. (Gorz, Dahrendorf, Daniel Bell, Hobsbawm).' Others state that there is no future for mankind (and therefore for human emancipation) as long as 'classical' industrial techno- logy and thence 'classical' wage labour are maintained at their present level because such a situation would lead to a complete destruction of the ecological balance (Ilitch, Bahro, G~rz).~The present crisis is therefore seen not as a typical crisis of overproduction and overaccumulation. It is seen as a fundamental change of structure of the international capitalist economy, with a long-term fundamental shift in the weight, cohesion and dynamic of wage labour, at the expense of that class, as a 'crisis of the industrial system'. Can this hypothesis be verified empirically? If not, what is the meaning and what are the long-term potential consequences of growing structural unemployment, which, in and by itself, is an undeniable phenomenon? If yes, what is the explanation of the phenomenon of the supposed 'decline of the working class' as an objective phenomenon? What are its potential economic consequences? Empirically, the basic trend which is statistically verifiable is that of the growth of wage labour on a world scale, and on all continents, and not that of its absolute or relative decline.

This qualitative study, supported by queer theory and intersectionality, explores the pedagogical practices and school policies that the school uses to inform its model of inclusion. The study expands on the projects of queer theory and intersectionality by focusing on homonormativity, an appendage of heteronormativity, and the complication of identity categories and their usefulness in an educational setting. Specifically, I sought to investigate how the school’s model of inclusion promotes an inclusive, safe space for its students. How the school’s strategies of policing, resistance, and queering occur within this model of inclusion. And, how this model of inclusion acquiesce to and contests existing systems of oppression. The research occurred in a small charter school located in an urban, Midwestern city. My research suggests that the high school adopted policies and practices that build on the students’ identities and challenges the normative and material gaze of the larger society.

Marxism and the Solidarity Economy: Toward a New Theory of Revolution Abstract In the twenty-first century, it is time that Marxists updated the conception of socialist revolution they have inherited from Marx, Engels, and Lenin. Slogans about the “dictatorship of the proletariat” “smashing the capitalist state” and carrying out a social revolution from the commanding heights of a reconstituted state are completely obsolete. In this article I propose a reconceptualization that accomplishes several purposes: first, it explains the logical and empirical problems with Marx’s classical theory of revolution; second, it revises the classical theory to make it, for the first time, logically consistent with the premises of historical materialism; third, it provides a (Marxist) theoretical grounding for activism in the solidarity economy, and thus partially reconciles Marxism with anarchism; fourth, it accounts for the long-term failure of all attempts at socialist revolution so far.

    Austeritarianism in Europe: what options for resistance? Richard Hyman Introduction In much of Europe, the social rights and social protections won by labour movements have recently been seriously eroded, and are further threatened by neoliberal austerity. Efforts to resist have been largely unsuccessful; but is an effective fight-back possible? In the next section I briefly outline how the ‘new economic governance’ of the European Union (EU) has reinforced this erosion, particularly with the economic crisis and the ensuing pursuit of austerity. I then survey a range of forms of protest and opposition, notably through trade union action (section 2), before turning to a discussion of ‘new’ social movements (section 3). In conclusion I suggest that a nuanced evaluation of success and failure is necessary, and I propose that the articulation of different forms of resistance – cross-nationally and between different actors – is essential in order to stem the neoliberal hegemony. 1. Brussels versus workers’ rights? The sovereign debt crisis was facilitated, and at the same time reinforced by, the embrace of neoclassical fiscal orthodoxy within the institutions of the EU. Deflationary macroeconomic priorities date back to the establishment of EMU. The economic logic of ‘correction’ was simple: deflation in order to achieve ‘internal devaluation’ as a substitute for the unavailable option of currency devaluation. A priority was to attack public sector employment, pay and pensions, and to reduce and privatise public services. The recipe was both socially regressive and – in a context of stagnation or recession – negatively pro-cyclical: austerity fuels recession (ETUI 2013: 8; 2014: 17).
