Canadian Bulletin Cumulative Table Of Contents 1982-89 Compiled by John Leeder

Introduction

Compiling a cumulative table of contentscould be expectedto be a routine, boring exercise, right? But in this case it turned out to be otherwise. Approximately half of the issuescovered by this listing fell into the term when I was editor, either officially or de facto, of the Canadian Folk Music Bulletin. As a result, every item from that period evoked a rush of memories, a small warm glow at some private victory, a stab of frustration at somethingI fell down on. Quite a nostalgia trip! In addition, a systematicrundown of the issuesedited by my predecessor,Tim Rogers, rekindled my senseof wonder at Tim's boundlessenergy and resourcefulness. An assessmentof the amount of material carried by the Bulletin during Tim's tenure boggles the mind- especially when you consider that, like me, he did the job as an unpaid volunteer,in his sparetime. Tim, my hat is off to you once again! Lastly, the very beginning of the period coveredby the index included the farewell issue of Jon Bartlett and Rika Ruebsaatas editors. For many years Jon and Rika were free-enterprisepublishers of Canada Folk Bulletin; when that publication mergedwith the CanadianFolk Music Society's newsletterto form the magazineyou're reading now, they already had an admirable track record of service to Canada'sfolk music community, servicewhich continued under the aegis of the Society. I used the word "index" above. This is technically inaccurate. As the headingsays, this is a "cumulative table of contents,"nothing more. No analysisof the subject matter of articles is attempted. In most cases, though, the title of an article or feature says it all, and it should be pretty easy for readersto find material related to areasthey're interestedin. Again, compiling a "cumulative table of contents"turned out to be less straightforwardthan expected. Many questions aroseduring the compilation. For example, what should go in the "Articles and Features"category? I tried to leave out straight "housekeeping"matters, but sometimesthe housekeepingwas of major relevanceand deservedto be included, such as financial statementsor the constitution of the Society. Is an editorial housekeeping?Does giving an editorial a title magically confer the statusof an article? I tried to exclude ongoing "columns" by the sameauthor under the samename - mostlythese are listedonly under the author's name. But in some cases(for exampleDavid Spalding's column, which had two different titles, sometimes subtitles, sometimes not) I fell on the side of inclusion in the main listing. Another quandry was posedby ongoing featuressuch as "The Singers," witIl columns by different writers each time, somewith individual titles, some without. Thirdly, how about an overall feature such as "State of the Art," with separatereports for each province?I dealt with questionslike theseon the spot, but I expect that, given the length of time it took to compile the listing, policies sometimeschanged, were forgotten or "fuzzified," inconsistenciescrept in, and my on-the-spotdecisions did not add up to a coherentoverall policy. I only hope that any inconsistencieswhich may exist are not of such a magnitudeas to interfere with the usefulnessof the listing. The citation method should not give anybody any trouble. To choosea random example, "(1985) 19/4-8" means"page 8 of vol. 19, no. 4, which bore a cover date of 1985." I should explain some of the terms and abbreviationsI used in the caseof the songs."(Trad.)" after a song name of coursestands for "traditional," but would more accuratelyrefer to a song which appearsto be traditional, i.e., it's in traditional style and we don't know who wrote it. Where the author is known, he or she is credited, even where the song has passedinto tradition. In addition, a couple of other terms are used. "(Song contributor)" refers to a person who sent us a song which he or she didn't write. "(Song source)" refers to the earliestknown personfrom whom a song contributor got the version of the song that was printed in the Bulletin. This includes publishedversions; the book's author or editor is listed as the sourcein such cases. In the reviews section, I decidedto list books and recordingsboth by title and by author/artist,to make it easier for readersto find particular items. Where there are severalauthors/artists for one item, I usedonly the first name in the order given on the book or recording. Also. "(rec.)" standsfor "(recording)," which includesboth LPs and cassettes. It'd include CDs, too, only none were reviewed in the period. In alphabetizing,I inverted the article ("(The)," "(La)," etc.) only where necessary.Unfortunately, the necessitycame up fairly often, perforce interrupting the flow of the language of the item's title. Too bad - but there was no help for it, even though I find it unesthetic. And, of course, let's not neglect the businessend of things. At the end of the table you'll fmd information on the availability and cost of the issueslisted. Collect 'em all, kids! JohnLeeder
