2 PART A: PREPARING TO APPLY

Matriculation and the national senior certificate (NSC)

“Matriculation” means you have met the legal minimum admission requirement for degree study. This means that: • your NSC has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to bachelors degree (or if applying for a diploma, the minimum requirements for admission to diploma study) at a South African university, or • your Senior Certificate has been endorsed by UMALUSI to the effect that you have met the minimum requirements for admission to degree study in a South African university; or • you have a certificate of complete exemption from matriculation requirements, issued by the Matriculation Board.

We set additional admission requirements over and above the minimum legal eligibility requirement. In addition to the legal mini- mum you must also meet the admission requirements for your programme of study. These are set out in our Prospectus.

Conditional Matriculation Exemption

Although we do not usually accept applicants with certificates of Conditional Exemption, we will give consideration to applicants who qualify for Conditional Exemption. These certificates can be granted to: • South Africans on the grounds of mature age, subject to minimum requirements as set by the Matriculation Board applicants who have written a school-leaving examination other than the SA Senior Certificate • immigrants • applicants who have obtained certain post-school qualifications

Where we offer you a study place, and you intend to register at UCT in 2018, it is your responsibility to apply for the issue of the necessary conditional exemption certificate. This is done by submitting the appropriate application form, documents and fee to UCT at registration. UCT then forwards this to the Matriculation Board. You will be advised by the relevant faculty office.

ELIGIBILITY FOR MATRICULATION EXEMPTION for holders of foreign qualifications

If you have a school-leaving certificate from an international or foreign examing authority, to establish if you are eligible for a matriculation exemption certificate, consult the website at http://mb.usaf.ac.za/ or write to: HE Enrolment Programme (Matriculation Board), PO Box 3854, 0001, South Africa Tel: +27 010 591 4401/2 Fax: +27 86 680 5727

Admission requirements for undergraduate study

Familiarise yourself with our admission criteria. Should you hold a school-leaving certificate for which admission criteria are not specified in the2018 Undergraduate Prospectus, your application will be considered individually, taking into account your school curriculum, performance and National Benchmark Test results, where appropriate.

The 2018 Undergraduate Prospectus gives details of our admission requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission. Places are limited for reasons of capacity and this could mean that applicants who meet the minimum A pplicants ate admission requirements do not receive an offer of a study place.

National Benchmark Tests (NBTs)

All undergraduate applicants who are normally resident in, or have completed schooling in South Africa must write the National Benchmark Tests (NBTs), and all applicants to programmes in Health Sciences must write the NBTs. You must: • register for the NBTs before you apply (online, or before you submit a paper application form); • include your NBT registration number in your application; • have written the NBTs by 14 October 2017 du Un d ergra for Directions 2018

2 3 Applicants to the Faculty of Law and to Faculty of Humanities programmes, where Mathematics is not a requirement, need to write only the Academic and Quantitative Literacy (AQL) test. Applicants to Commerce, Engineering & the Built Environment, Health Sciences, and Science, must write both the AQL and the Mathematics NBT tests.

For information on the NBTs, please either visit www.nbt.uct.ac.za, or call 021 650 3523, or fax 021 650 5331, or email [email protected], or write to: The Project Secretary, Centre for Educational Testing for Access and Placement, University of Cape Town, Private Bag X3, Rondebosch, 7701.

When to write National Benchmark Tests

We strongly encourage you to write the NBTs by 31 July 2017. The final date for writing the NBTs is 14 October 2017. You do not need to submit your NBT results to UCT. We will receive these directly from the NBT Offices.

If you are unable to write the NBTs by 14 October 2017 you must apply to the Admissions Office before the end of September 2017 for permission to write the NBTs later. Permission will be granted only if there is evidence that you were unable to write. Please note (1) that NBTs can be written outside SA; and (2) your application for undergraduate study may be denied if you do not write by 14 October 2017 unless you have applied for and obtained permission to write at a later date.

Rewriting the NBTs

You are allowed to rewrite the NBTs once. Should you elect to do so, the second sitting must be no later than 14 October 2017. We use the better results of each domain / test.

For applicants who previously wrote the NBTs

NBT results are only valid for two years prior to the year of application; so if you wrote the NBTs in 2015 or 2016, the results remain valid, but you may choose to rewrite in 2017. If you wrote the NBTs prior to 2015, these results are no longer valid. Please submit your NBT registration number with your application, and we will obtain your results. If you no longer have your NBT registration number, please visit www.nbt.uct.ac.za in order to obtain your NBT registration number. You will need your South African identity number or passport number.

International applicants

If you are an international student, ensure that you visit the website of our International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO). This is the UCT office that supports international students and facilitates your integration into the UCT environment.

IAPO will help international students with application procedures, application deadlines, visa requirements and international tuition fees. Queries relating to academic qualifications and specific course requirements must be directed to the relevant faculty office. Prospective undergraduate international students who intend to study for a degree at UCT, or international students who intend to study at UCT for only one or two semesters, must apply online. International students who wish to be affiliated to UCT for short periods must complete the International Affiliates Application Form. These are obtainable from http://www.uct.ac.za/apply/applications/forms/ or from IAPO at:

International Academic Programmes Office University of Cape Town Private Bag X3 7701 Rondebosch Tel: +27 (0) 21 650 2822 Fax: +27 (0) 21 650 5667

Study Visas

In terms of the Immigration Act No 13 of 2002, if you are resident outside of South Africa and are not a South African citizen or do not have permanent residence, you are required to obtain a study visa to enter the Republic for the purpose of attending the University. The offer of a study place by the University does not bind the Department of Home Affairs in any way to allow you to study in South Africa, nor does it remove the need for you to obtain permission to enter the country. If you are offered a study place please apply immediately for a study visa. Your application must be made to the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission. This procedure could take up to 8 weeks. The application form BI-1738, duly completed, must be accompanied by the following: (a) valid passport (b) a fee (current details are available from the nearest South African Embassy, Consulate or High Commission) (c) an official letter from UCT confirming provisional acceptance at the institution and the duration of the course (d) in the case of a person under the age of 21 years. (i) the particulars of the person in the Republic who will act as that learner’s guardian and a confirmatory letter from that intended guardian; and (ii) proof of consent for the intended stay from both parents or from the custodian parent, along with proof of sole custody in the latter case (e) a police clearance certificate (f) medical and radiological reports (g) documents relating to marital status if applicable (h) a yellow fever vaccination certificate if that person travelled or intends travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area (i) in the case of a foreign state accepting responsibility for the applicant in terms of a bilateral agreement, a written undertaking in respect of the departure of the applicant (j) proof of medical cover with a medical scheme registered in terms of the Medical Schemes Act, 1998 (Act No. 131 of 1998), or other medical insurance cover recognised in the Republic (access www.medicalschemes.com for a list of medical schemes recognised in South Africa) (k) proof of sufficient financial means (l) payment of a deposit; provided that such deposit shall be refunded to the depositor after the final departure of the applicant or after a permit contemplated in section 25 of the Act has been issued to the applicant; provided further that the payment of the deposit may be effected by means of a bank guaranteed cheque or credit card at places where such facility exists (m) in the case of students from Africa, the payment of the deposit shall not be required: provided that the Government of the relevant African country submits a written undertaking to pay all costs relating to the deportation of the student, should this become necessary (n) other requirements as may be prescribed by the Consulate/Embassy.

8 We recommend that you contact the nearest South African Consulate/Embassy before sending in your visa application, in order to find out exactly what documents are needed, because requirements may change. It is very important that your study visa is valid for studies at the University of Cape Town. If you have studied at another South African University or attended high school in South Africa, your study visa needs to be changed for studies at the University of Cape Town.

International students residing within South Africa will not be able to register unless in possession of a valid study visa and proof of medical cover. International students (Master’s and Doctoral students) living outside South Africa during the academic year may be registered by the University without having to apply for a study visa. Such students need to obtain a suitable visa when visiting UCT and their supervisors, and on arrival in Cape Town must report to IAPO with details of their visa.

Enquiries about study visas should be directed to: 1. The South African embassy or high commission for applications submitted in your home country Or 2. The Director-General Department of Home Affairs Private Bag X9102 Cape Town, 8000 Tel: +27 (0) 21 465 5012/2477 Fax: +27 (0) 21 461 2708

if the application is submitted within South Africa.

The International Academic Programmes Office (IAPO) will send you a fee invoice on request detailing the cost of your study for the duration of your stay. 8 9 monitoring Your application status

We will publish your application status online. We will update this as we make decisions during the process. Please regularly monitor your application status online at http://studentsonline.uct.ac.za (at the Student Centre in Student Self Service) or at http://uct.ac.za/apply/applications/undergraduates/status/ (public access).

One of the following statuses may apply: • Decision Deferred: this means that, we do not have enough information to make you an offer of admission. In order to make you an offer of admission, we may await your NBT results, improved school examination results, predicted scores, etc. A deferred decision does not mean that your application is unsuccessful. • Conditional Offer: this means that we are offering you a place with conditions, which are included in the offer letter that you will receive from us. Your offer of a place is confirmed only when you meet these conditions. You need to establish the final status before arriving at UCT for registration in 2018. • Firm Offer: this means that you are offered a place without conditions. • Waitlisted: this means that a final decision on your application will be taken when we have further information about the entire pool of applicants. This additional information will allow us to assess your application in relation to others. • Denied: your application was unsuccessful.
