Twenty-seven species are found in the Paleocene, 442 in the Eocene and 94 in the Oligocene. The greatest diversity of Curculionoidea is described from the Eocene of Europe and North America. The richest faunas are known from Eocene localities, Florissant (177 species), Baltic amber (124 species) and Green River formation (75 species). The family Curculionidae dominates in all Paleogene localities. Weevil species associated with herbaceous vegetation are present in most localities since the middle Paleocene. Introduction Research into the biodiversity of the past is very important for understanding the development of life on our planet. Insects are one of the Main components of both extinct and recent ecosystems. Coleoptera occupied a special place in the terrestrial animal biotas of the Mesozoic and Cenozoics, as they are characterized by not only great diversity but also by their ecological specialization. -

The report is based on our activities for the calendar year 2006; however, the budget figures are for FY06. The lead article in the most recent issue of the Department of Botany Plant Press is about the BDG program. It is attached in lieu of an extended introduction to the program. (See APPENDIX A: Funk, V.A. 2007. The Guiana Shield: 20 years and counting. The Plant Press 10 (2): 1, 12-15). As always, thanks go to the OD at NMNH for the continued funding (and of course to Congress for the Global Change money many years ago). Seventeen families are commonly found in freshwater wetlands, with Ephydridae, Chloropidae, Sciomyzidae, Sphaeroceridae, and Scathophagidae being among the most important in terms of population size and species richness. Difficulty with sampling cryptic larval habitats and species identification chal- lenges may account for the exclusion of acalyptrate and other dipterans from wetlands ecology studies. Large populations are facilitated by the high productivity of freshwater wetlands and the high intrinsic rate of increase characteristic of many species. Higher dipterans exist in all freshwater wetland types, are microhabitat selective, and play significant roles in food webs. E-mails: [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT: We describe a monotypic genus from Priabonian (late Eocene) Baltic amber that has a moderately small (1.3x2.1 mm), ovate-conic shell with a large free aperture extended to the wall of the penultimate whorl. The parietal margin of the aperture is reflected and has a lip. The aperture is only partially visible because of dirt and an air bubble in the amber.
